Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal in front for the first time on the night with a goal in the first period of extra-time, only for Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak to make it 5-5.But Walcott restored Arsenal's lead before Chamakh completed the scoring.A remarkable night was further added to by the faintly ridiculous moment when Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin threw their shirts into the crowd, thinking the match was over, only to have to awkwardly ask for them back once they realised extratime was still to come.Manchester City 9-0 Burton AlbionManchester City went on to win the competition in 2019 after sweeping Burton aside [Getty Images]Semi-final first leg, 9 January 2019, Etihad StadiumBurton Albion's first major semifinal was somewhat ruined as they were roundly thrashed by Manchester City.The 3,000 Brewers fans had to battle some M6 chaos just to get there and some might have wished they'd stayed stuck in traffic.Nigel Clough's side had beaten a mixture of Premier League and Championship sides to get to the last four but were powerless to stop a rampant City side.Gabriel Jesus scored four, with Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez also scoring against the beleaguered League One side.After Burton's fairy tale cup run finally ended, Clough said that Pep Guardiola invited him in for a glass of wine and quipped he hoped the Spaniard had "more than a glass."The second leg finished 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium, sealing a 100 aggregate victory for City.Liverpool 10-0 FulhamIan Rush (centre) scored twice in Liverpool's double-digit victory [Getty Images]Second round first leg, 23 September 1986, AnfieldLeague champions Liverpool showed their class with a 10-goal demolition of Fulham.Steve McMahon scored four and missed a penalty as the Third Division side were swept aside at Anfield. Ian Rush and John Wark struck early, Ronnie Whelan added a third, and McMahon scored either side of Wark's second. He hit the bar from the spot before making it seven, with further goals from Rush, McMahon and Nicol sealing the club's biggest victory in domestic competition.Liverpool then won the second leg 3-2, advancing 13-2 on aggregate.Preston North End 1-1 Fulham (16-15 pens)Preston's penalty shootout win against Fulham is the longest-ever penalty shootout in League Cup history [Getty Images]Third round, 17 September 2024, DeepdaleYes, 1-1 isn't the most memorable scoreline, but the third-round tie between Preston North End and Fulham in 2024 makes it into the record books after producing the longest penalty shootout in the competition's history. A total of 34 spot kicks were taken 31 of which were successfully converted as Paul Heckingbottom's men booked their place in round four.Just when it seemed the shootout may never end, Fulham's Timothy Castagne blazed his spot-kick over the bar and Preston midfielder Ryan Ledson who scored the game's opener in the 36th minute fired in the decisive penalty.The shootout eclipsed the previous record set in 2016 when Derby County beat Carlisle United 14-13 on penalties. Laura Scarlett-McAllister was a physio for Team England's wheelchair basketball teams [Laura Scarlett-McAllister]A physiotherapist who was part of the Team England backroom staff at the Commonwealth Games has described the "incredible experience" of being part of the games in Glasgow.Laura Scarlett-McAllister, from Bicester, worked with the English wheelchair basketball teams during the games which ended on 2 August.The men's team won the silver medal, whilst the women's team claimed gold.Scarlett-McAllister had a more roundabout way of making it to the games than most, only retraining to become a physio in her 40s."I did a lot of sport myself, had a few injuries, and saw the physio quite a lot - so I was interested in physio, but didn't really get into it until later in life," the 55-year-old said."After getting divorced, I decided to go back to uni and qualified about 13 years ago.""I really did it the hard way, whilst having children at home."England's women's wheelchair basketball team won gold, whilst the men claimed silver [Getty Images]Scarlett-McAllister was asked last year by Team England's wheelchair basketball sides if she would work for them at this summer's games."Of course I said 'yes'," she said.Fast forward 10 months and she was walking out alongside the rest of Team England at the opening ceremony at Glasgow's Hydro arena."It was amazing - just lining up with the team and going in for the opening ceremony," she said."Then supporting the athletes throughout the competition was an incredible experience."Scarlett-McAllister retrained as a physiotherapist in her 40s [Laura Scarlett-McAllister]She explained that her job with the wheelchair basketball teams had been to "look after" the athletes and "ensure they're in the best physical shape"."They're very resilient actually," she said of the players."They do fall out of their wheelchair quite frequently, but they tend to bounce back up again.""They don't roll on the floor for 10 minutes like the footballers."With Scarlett-McAllister's help, the men's team won the silver medal, whilst the women's team claimed gold.But she has no time to rest on her successes."[I'm] potentially going to India with basketball, but my next event is a Lawn Tennis Association event at Roehampton.""It's quite busy," she said. Chelsea and Napoli still a long way off for BadiashileChelsea and Napoli are still a long way off from agreeing a deal for defender Benoit Badiashile, according to Gianluca DiMarzio.The Blues are looking to get the Frenchman off their books following an underwhelming three-year spell at Stamford Bridge.Chelsea need to streamline their squad, and Badiashile is surplus to requirements.The 25-year-old is yet to feature in pre-season for the West London club, a sign that he has no future with them.The Italian side entered the picture with a loan deal that includes a buy option. It looked like they were close to finally landing their first-choice defensive target.However, per the report, they are not close to signing the Chelsea star. It does mention that the Naples team is ready to press forward with a deal.Chelsea are already complete at the back following the addition of Maxence Lacroix to the ranks.They must now focus on selling and loaning players from their bloated squad to avoid saddling Xabi Alonso with an overloaded team.Axel Disasi is also on his way out, with a loan offer on the table, including an obligation to buy.That defensive clear-out should not stop with Badiashile and Disasi.Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana should also be allowed to follow them out the door.Fofanas injury record makes him a particularly difficult player to rely on, while Adarabioyo has struggled to establish himself as an indispensable part of the squad.Moving both on would give Alonso even more room to work with while helping Chelsea reduce their wage bill.Josh Acheampong, Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino should all be sent out on loan, rather than being left on the fringes of Alonsos squad.All three need regular senior football to continue their development, and sitting on the bench at Stamford Bridge would do little for them.A well-chosen loan move could give each defender the minutes, responsibility and experience required to return as more complete players.
