The quarterback position may have been the biggest question mark for Penn State heading into the 2026 season, but the team views it as a positive. Head coach Matt Campbell is supremely confident in the group, namely Rocco Becht and Alex Manske, and he showed that during the teams media day.The new Penn State coach was asked about Manskes play following his return to action and he couldnt refrain from raving about the redshirt freshman. Campbell told reporters that Manske has all these elite traits. You just saw it, this guy is really special.These comments came when the former Iowa State coach was discussing his quarterbacks versatility, citing his basketball and golf skills as examples. From everything Campbell said about Manske, it sounds like hell get a shot to lead the Nittany Lions in the coming years.Becht is in his final year of eligibility, so the team has done a lot of digging to find quarterbacks in future recruiting classes to fall back on in case none of the in-house options pan out. It may just be a way of building up a young signal caller, but it sounds like Campbell would be comfortable with Manske starting Week One if need be.When discussing his play on the field, the first-year Penn State coach told reporters, hes got elite arm talent. Julian Sayin opened preseason training camp this week with a bigger frame than he carried during his first year as Ohio States starting quarterback.Sayin said he has grown to 215 pounds following his continued physical development over the offseason with strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti.It was very helpful in the offseason, Sayin said, Coach Mick pushed me pretty hard.The Buckeyes listed Sayin at 208 pounds as a redshirt freshman last year. He had been 203 pounds in 2024.The extra weight has helped me throwing the ball and running the ball, Sayin said.Sayin has put a priority on improving as a runner, an emphasis that began in spring practice. He was one of just six Big Ten starting quarterbacks who were held to negative rushing yards last year as he finished with minus-44 yards on 42 carries.The added weight and strength figures to allow him to better withstand contact on designed runs or scrambles to escape pressure.His size should help as well as a passer, adding greater velocity on his throws.Being able to add some weight and improve strength and have a stronger base, a little bit stronger legs, is able to increase that pace Sayin said.It was evident during the Buckeyes third preseason practice on Aug. 8 when Sayin delivered some precise passes in the red zone.Sayin was the most accurate passer in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2025 with his 77% completion percentage, but he was less efficient inside the 20-yard line as the compressed space and tighter coverage saw his percentage dip to 67.2%.Sayin said a frequent refrain from coach Ryan Day is that no one will be open in the red zone.Every window is going to be tight, Sayin said.
