When former five-star Adepoju Adebawore committed to the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2023 class, it signaled a major early win for Brent Venables and his staff. The Kansas City native was one of the physically gifted EDGE defenders in the class. He was ranked as the No. 4 overall player, according to On3. However, his time in Norman hasn't quite lived up to the hype. He has battled injuries and has totaled just 27 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks in his first three seasons. He's mainly been used as a role player along the defensive line. Despite him not having quite the production Venables and co. have been looking for, Sooner EDGE Taylor Wein feels Adebawore is in for a breakout season, similar to what Wein had last season. Adebawore said after practice on Friday that he thinks he has that potential. "Definitely," Adebawore said via OU Insider. "That's always the goal for everybody to have a breakout year. Yes, sir, I do see myself doing that."When asked why he feels he could break out this season, Adebawore said it's due to how he's transformed his body."Just my body," Adebawore said. "Trying to just transform my body more and more as much as I can. Trying to get back healthy and get my body ready for the season because it's a long season. So, you've got to be healthy."Health has been one of the biggest obstacles preventing Adebawore from becoming the player many expected when he arrived in Norman. Now entering his fourth season, he finally has an opportunity to turn his elite physical tools into consistent production.With R Mason Thomas now in the NFL, Oklahoma needs another pass rusher to emerge alongside Wein. If Adebawore can stay healthy and capitalize on the opportunity in front of him, he has all the traits to become one of the Sooners' biggest breakout players and help keep Venables' defensive front among the nation's best. Carolina Panthers quarterback Haynes King is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, per The Athletics Joe Person. King is just a few days removed from being the Panthers hero when he scored the game-winning touchdown in last Thursdays Hall of Fame Game against the Arizona Cardinals. Carolina had only six seconds left in the game, down 30-27. King took matters into his own hands and took off for the end zone, avoiding defenders to score the game-winning five-yard rushing touchdown. The quarterback has been in a battle with veteran QB Kenny Pickett to be the backup to starter Bryce Young. Reports in training camp were that King had been impressing, and he showed that they were accurate in Thursdays win.King finished the game 21 of 34 for 180 yards with two passing touchdowns. He added 39 yards and another touchdown on the ground, with no carry bigger than the game-winner. The rookie went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft. He started his career with Texas A&M in 2020, but played in only two games, leading to a redshirt season. King got the chance to finally start in 2022, but played in only six games before he suffered a season-ending injury. This resulted in a medical redshirt, granting an extra year of eligibility. The QB chose to transfer and spent the final three years of his collegiate career at Georgia Tech. With the Yellow Jackets, he had 7,907 yards, 55 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Last season, King played in 12 games for Georgia Tech. He finished with 2,951 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. King continued being a dual-threat quarterback, adding 953 yards and 15 more touchdowns on 185 carries. Person reported that the Panthers are expected to bring in another quarterback while King recovers. Young is the obvious starter, but the role of his backup remains up for grabs. It belonged to Andy Dalton last season, but he was traded for late-round draft capital to the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason. Currently, Young, Pickett and King are the only quarterbacks on the roster. Since the Panthers played in the Hall of Fame game, the team has three more preseason games left to play.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton didn't last long on the free-agent market following her release from the New York Liberty. Laney-Hamilton landed on her feet quickly, reportedly signing a deal with the Washington Mystics,according to USA Todays Meghan L. Hall. The Mystics were awarded the waiver claim on Laney-Hamilton, and that could turn out to be for a team that is currently part of a logjam that could result in finishing as high as fourth in the WNBA standings or eighth for the last playoff spot. With Laney-Hamilton suddenly out of a spot, there was some thought she would make for an interesting trade candidate at the deadline. No deal materialized, and the Liberty opted to release Laney-Hamilton on Aug. 6.It was an unceremonious end to an otherwise excellent tenure with the team. Following her 2020 breakout, Laney-Hamilton signed with the Liberty and played a key role in the team turning things around.In her first season with the team, Laney-Hamilton was selected to her first All-Star team. She averaged 16.8 points, leading the Liberty that season. The team improved its win-loss record by 10 games that year, though still posted a record under .500.But the Liberty steadily improved, eventually going 32-8 and reaching the WNBA Finals in 2023. The team lost to the Las Vegas Aces that season, though Laney-Hamilton started every game of the Finals.After posting an identical record in 2024, the Liberty once again reached the Finals, this time defeating the Minnesota Lynx to win the title. Laney-Hamilton once again started every single game in the Finals.After missing all of 2025, the 32-year-old Laney-Hamilton was hoping to experience a resurgent comeback year with the Liberty. While that didn't happen, Laney-Hamilton's previous ability made her an intriguing option once she became available.Now that she's found a new team, it will be up to Laney-Hamilton to prove she still can recapture her old form after getting off to a rough start in 2026.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on Saturday, ending the season for two players. They placed safety Joey Blount and tight end Kenny Yeboah on injured reserve. Blount did not play in the team's first preseason game. Missing almost all last season with a neck injury, he had a stinger in practice and apparently it was serious enough to end his season. He has been a special teams stud for the Cardinals since joining the team in 2023. Yeboah played in the preseason opener on Thursday and apparently got hurt. Both players, if they had stayed healthy, had good chances to make the 53-man roster. The Cardinals will make corresponding moves to fill those roster spots, but they have not been announced. Yeboah hasn't played since 2024, as he suffered an injury last August that landed him on IR then. So, when the Minnesota Vikings extended offensive tackle Brian O'Neill with a four-year, $96 million deal, it got a lot of attention.Was it too much? Did the Vikings need to make that deal right now? Those were some of the obvious questions.Seth Walder of ESPN has a feature out on Friday about some of the biggest contract extensions during the NFL offseason. In the piece, he's "evaluating the decisions teams make, considering the player in question, the price and the rest of the team's roster, cap situation and time horizon to contention."Minnesota Vikings made a good deal with contract extensionFor the Vikings, Walder is a fan of their extension of O'Neill, noting that the player has "always performed very well and been consistent in pass block win rate."Walder ended in the 95th percentile or above for three consecutive seasons from 2022 to 2024. Last season, he dropped to the 79th percentile, which is still good."At age 30 with only one year left on his contract, extending O'Neill made a ton of sense," Walder says, noting that "offensive tackles can continue to play at a high level well into their 30s" and "right now contract costs for good tackles are relatively cheap."He adds, "Losing O'Neill would really hurt the offense, replacing him would be difficult, and his extension costs only $24 million per year."So, this was a win-win for both parties. The Chargers are getting closer to finding out what they have.The first preseason game is on the horizon, with the Chargers set to travel to Houston to face the Texans on Thursday. Saturdays practice at The Bolt was another important checkpoint as the Chargers continue sorting through a roster that Jim Harbaugh believes has legitimate competition throughout it.The biggest name to keep an eye on, as it has been throughout training camp, remains left tackle Rashawn Slater.Slater did not practice Saturday, but there was no reason for alarm. Harbaugh called it a veteran rest day and said Slater remains right on schedule in his recovery from the ruptured patellar tendon that ended his 2025 season.The Chargers are carefully managing his workload. Harbaugh explained that Slater has progressed from being cleared for two consecutive reps to three, with that number continuing to increase.Cleared, the amount of reps he can do consecutively is two, now it's three, now it's continuing to go up, Harbaugh said.That is probably the most important thing to understand about Slater right now. His absence from a practice does not necessarily signal a setback. The Chargers are measuring his return in increments, and the goal is to have him ready when the games actually matter.Harbaugh also declined to get into specifics regarding the minor issue Slater dealt with during practice in San Diego a few days ago.For now, the message from the Chargers is simple: Slater is progressing, and the team is going to be deliberate with him.That approach will be especially important as the preseason begins.Harbaugh has already laid out his plan for Thursday. Approximately 15 veterans and starters will warm up with the team but will not play against the Texans. The group is not necessarily a traditional starting 11, but rather a collection of veterans the coaching staff wants to keep out of preseason game action.The plan changes in the following games.Harbaugh said the starters and veterans are expected to play one series in the second preseason game and two series in the third. That makes the preseason less about watching the established stars and more about evaluating everyone fighting for a role.And Harbaugh has a particularly colorful way of describing what he wants to see from those younger players.Some guys rise like cream to the top and some guys melt like butter in the toaster.That is the preseason in one sentence.Players are going to get opportunities. Some will make the most of them, while others will show the coaching staff that they aren't ready for the moment.One player who appears determined to make sure he belongs in the first category is wide receiver Tre Harris.Harris said after practice that he added seven to eight pounds of muscle during the offseason and is now up to 215 pounds.The added size isn't simply about looking stronger. Harris believes it has helped him become a more complete player, particularly in an offense that is asking more of him.Adding weight definitely helped, Harris said.Harris also acknowledged that he wasn't satisfied with how he performed during the back half of last season. That disappointment appears to have fueled his offseason.Now, his opportunity is much bigger.Harbaugh went as far as putting Harris alongside Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston as the team's top wide receivers.I have him right there with Ladd and Q as our top guys, Harbaugh said.That is significant praise from a head coach who isn't exactly short on offensive weapons.Harris also described an offense in which he is being schemed open more frequently. The Chargers are finding different ways to involve him, and his role has expanded.Just finding my role, Harris said. This year I'm being schemed a little more for sure.There is another part of that role that Harris wants to embrace: blocking.With Mike McDaniel's influence now being felt throughout the Chargers' offense, receivers are being asked to contribute in ways that go beyond simply running routes and catching passes.Harris said he wants to be part of that blocking scheme. That matters. If Harris can become a receiver who consistently threatens defenses while also holding up in the run game, his path to significant playing time becomes much clearer.The same principle applies to the tight end room.Oronde Gadsden II showed flashes of being a difference-maker as a rookie, coming up with crucial catches and helping the Chargers win games. But there was another side of his rookie experience that he clearly wants to correct.Gadsden said he was getting thrown around in the run game last season.So he added weight intentionally this offseason.The goal is straightforward: stay on the field more often and become a more reliable piece of the offense in every situation.Gadsden has also spent time studying Jonnu Smith's tape from Miami, looking for ways to improve his game within an offense that places a premium on timing.He said that emphasis is evident simply by watching McDaniel's offenses from the past.That education could become valuable quickly.The Chargers have plenty of options at tight end, and Harbaugh is excited about what the group can become.Four really highly capable playersCharlie, David, Oronde, Scott Matlock, Harbaugh said.That is a crowded room, but it is the kind of problem a coaching staff wants.The Chargers don't need every young player to prove everything in the first preseason game. They need players to show enough that the coaching staff can begin separating the contenders from the rest of the field.That's what makes Thursday important. Not because the final score against Houston will tell us much about the Chargers' 2026 season. It won't.The real story will be who plays with urgency, who looks comfortable in the new offense, who holds up physically and who forces the coaching staff to reconsider where that player belongs on the depth chart.Slater's progress will continue to be monitored carefully. Harris is trying to turn a strong training camp into a much bigger role. Gadsden is trying to prove that he can be more than a passing-game weapon.And throughout the roster, young Chargers are about to get their first real opportunity to show whether they will rise to the occasion, or, in Harbaugh's words, melt like butter in the toaster.

MIAMI GARDENS If Malik Willis was making an error, it was a minor one. Willis was reflecting on the talk hed recently given teammates, and in doing so, he tried to pass it off as no big deal.See if you agree:I just wanted to talk to the offense and just have a man-to-man conversation, Willis said. Weve got to understand this is a business and weve got to take what we do personal. Weve got to take pride in it and weve got to do it to the best or our ability regardless.This was the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback addressing the team like, yes, the starting quarterback. Some Dolphins quarterbacks in the post-Marino era may have said the same thing, some, maybe not. He has attempted fewer passes in his four-year NFL career than Dan Marino did in his first seven games.Patience isnt what it once was in the NFL. Doubly so for Dolphins quarterbacks. Miami has a maximum of two years to kick the tires on Willis. He knows either he makes this his team or he doesnt. Thankfully, his modesty didnt preclude him from imploring teammates to buckle down.Its just a conversation more than anything, he said. I dont know if you need some super courage or anything else (to address teammates). These are people I work with every day, I go to war with. Were in the weight room. Weve been together, what, six months already? So its just talking to the guys.It was only a handful of summers ago that when Dolphins players voted for team captains. Tua Tagovailoa didnt make the cut, but lineman Jesse Davis and receiver Mack Hollins did. The Dolphins tried to sell it as no big deal that their starting quarterback wasnt, in teammates eyes, one of the five top leaders on the team. It was, and is. Thats where Willis finding his voice is about as important as Willis finding an open man.Two of a quarterbacks best friends are a dependable set of wide receivers and a tight end with a knack for being there when the QB is under duress. When the Dolphins practiced in Hard Rock Stadium on August 8, Willis had neither. His receivers are unproven and tight end Greg Dulcich was in a red, non-contact jersey. Oh, and the running attack was stuck in the mud on this day.No matter. Running a red-zone drill on the 2-yard line near the end of practice, Willis went back to pass, checked his first, second and third reads, found nobody open and took off. As he did, Chop Robinson closed in. Had it been an actual game, would it have been a sack? Maybe, maybe not. Robinson swore it was. Willis swore it wasnt.I just ran it in, Willis said. Works out like that sometimes. All you can do is be grateful.Reporters were split on the call. The fact there was a debate was a testament to Willis offering the Dolphins elusiveness that Tagovailoa didnt. Its not just about avoiding sacks, its about Willis ability to make plays with his legs, whether its to actually run for yardage or to buy time to throw. Hes doing both well enough that to ask which he does better is to invite another chapter of the never-ending reporters debates. Lets call that a draw.Is Malik Willis really the 29th-best QB in the NFL?None of this is to say Willis is obviously The Answer. To say that about a player who has thrown 155 passes would be foolish. Plus, the rest of the NFL remains unconvinced. The Athletic just did a survey of 50 league experts, including executives, and Willis came up as the 29th-best quarterback. In a 32-team league? With Tagovailoa tied for No. 26?Wait, theres a caveat. The Athletic lumped Willis in its fourth tier of QBs, which it labeled as unproven player; not enough information to classify or veteran who ideally would not be a full-season starter. Plus, it wrote that despite the minuscule sample size, it was enough for 17 of the 50 voters to place Willis in Tier 3 as a legitimate starter. One exec even called Willis the one guy where you said, OK, if we sign him, we give him a couple years, he could maybe ascend to that 2 level. Tier 2 consists of guys like Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Drake Maye and Jordan Love. Suddenly, No. 29 doesnt seem so bad, does it?One aspect of Willis play thats emerging this week is the connection he has developed with receiver Caleb Douglas, the third-round pick out of Texas Tech. Despite Willis disclaimer that hes still trying to figure everybody out, it would appear he already has all the information he needs on Mr. Douglas.I think hes a great player, Willis said.Funny, but offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, the Dolphins first-round pick, used that very phrase to describe Willis after the practice.Hes also one of the greatest leaders, Proctor said. He stood up in front of the team. That takes a lot of courage to talk to the team, right there. They extended running back Jahmyr Gibbs with a three-year, $67.5 million deal.It was a deal that the Lions' base has been wanting to see for a long time. Gibbs is a fireball on the field. He's become one of quarterback Jared Goff's favorite targets when he's not throwing deep. He's talented, and any good offense needs a running back like Gibbs.But, was this a good deal? "For example, in 2015, Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch signed deals that were worth the equivalent of $29.4 million and $25.2 million per year, respectively, in 2026's cap environment."He adds that Gibbs ranks fifth on the list. So, the good news here is that NFL analysts believe this is a great deal for both Gibbs and Detroit.
