Washington Mystics claim former Liberty forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton off waivers
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton has been awarded on waivers to the Washington Mystics, the team announced Saturday. The New York Liberty waived the 11-year veteran Thursday after four full seasons with the franchise, including the 2024 season when the Liberty won their first WNBA championship. After missing the entire 2025 campaign while recovering from surgery to repair a meniscus injury in her left knee, she signed a one-year, $400,000 protected veteran contract. After starting the first four games of the season, Laney-Hamiltons role was diminished substantially. She appeared in 13 more games for the Liberty, starting just one. She was a healthy scratch for eight consecutive games before being waived.Because the Mystics claimed Laney-Hamilton off waivers, they will pay out the remainder of her $400,000 contract. They had over $1.8 million in cap space before acquiring Laney-Hamilton, but had to waive guard Rori Harmon to make room for her on their roster. The Mystics decision to claim Laney-Hamilton came down to a desire for a veteran presence as they attempt to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2023, according to a team source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing transaction. The Mystics expect her to come off the bench, but are excited to see what she can contribute as a rotation wing. The team source also said Laney-Hamilton is excited to be in Washington. The Mystics have one open developmental spot they hope to use to bring Harmon back. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.New York Liberty, Washington Mystics, WNBA2026 The Athletic Media Company

Adepoju Adebawore reveals how Danny Okoye has pushed him to be better
The Oklahoma Sooners have begun fall camp as the 2026 college football season draws closer. This fall camp will showcase some big position battles that could determine just how good the Sooners are this upcoming season. One of the biggest position battles is for the EDGE opposite Taylor Wein, a spot vacated by R Mason Thomas going to the NFL. This battle is between Adepoju Adebawore and Danny Okoye. Adebawore is a former five-star recruit who has had a solid career, but not quite to the level the Sooners were hoping for when he arrived in Norman. Adebawore has had 27 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks in his career. The senior had his best season last year, racking up 17 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in a rotational role. He also established himself as one of the better run stoppers in the SEC. Okoye, on the other hand, is a former four-star recruit with freakish athletic ability. He played sparingly as a redshirt freshman last season, totaling six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Adebawore spoke after practice on Friday about how Okoye has pushed him to be a better player. "He has work ethic," Adebawore said via OU Insider. "He has drive. Just a very driven player. And you know, just seeing that from a younger guy just makes me want to elevate all the time. Those guys come in, and they do so much for me. I see their work ethic, and it makes me want to try even harder to make sure I'm the example with me being older."The competition between Adebawore and Okoye could be one of the defining battles of Oklahoma's fall camp. Replacing a player like Thomas won't be easy, but the Sooners don't necessarily need one player to replicate his production on their own.Instead, Oklahoma needs consistent pressure opposite Wein, regardless of who wins the starting job. If Adebawore continues building on the momentum from last season while Okoye takes the expected sophomore leap, Brent Venables could have another deep and disruptive edge rotation. For a defense that led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss last season, that depth could once again be one of the keys to another championship-caliber defense.Contact/Follow us@SoonersWireon X (formerly known as Twitter), and like our page onFacebookto follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions. You can also follow Jaron on X@jaronspor.This article originally appeared on Sooners Wire: Adepoju Adebawore reveals how Danny Okoye has pushed him to be better

2 New York Giants named 2026 fantasy football breakout candidates
Is New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo a good player to bank on as a breakout star in fantasy football next season?NFL.coms Matt Okada believes so, and lists Skattebo as one of 14 breakout candidates for fantasy football in 2026.From Week 2 through Week 7 of Skattebo's rookie season, while he was the feature back and healthy, he scored the sixth-most fantasy points at the position, averaging 19.1 per game. He did so despite averaging just 0.5 yards before contact per carry during this span, amazingly averaging 3.7 yardsaftercontact per carry and forcing a missed tackle on 29.2% of his carries, perNFL Pro. The good news: New head coach John Harbaugh has already reshaped the run game in front of Skattebo with the selection of offensive linemanFrancis Mauigoaand the acquisition of fullbackPatrick Ricard(among other moves). There are hurdles to the second-year back's breakout: the injury risk of Skattebo's violent running style and, to a lesser degree, the presence ofTyrone Tracy Jr.in the backfield. But with good health and an improved offense, Skattebo has the ultimate upside to contend for RB1 overall.Skattebo was a productive running back before suffering an injury last season. He found ways to accumulate yards on the ground and reach the end zone, earning goal-line touches and similar opportunities. He is projected by some to rush for more than 1,000 yards in 2026, positioning him as a player who may experience one of the biggest jumps next season. In addition to Skattebo, Okada also listed quarterback Jaxson Dart.It was a somewhat-spotty rookie season for Dart, who took the starting reins in Week 4, immediately lost his WR1, later lost his RB1 and missed two and a half games in November following a concussion. Even still, Dart averaged 20.13 fantasy points per game in his 12 starts. Over the full season, that figure would have made him the QB4. In 2026, he gets RBCam Skatteboand WRMalik Nabersback from injury, while also benefiting from the addition of TEIsaiah Likelyand improved personnel on the offensive line. He's one of the most dangerous rushing quarterbacks in the league -- hitting 487 yards and nine touchdowns in those 12 starts -- and was impressive as a passer in Year 1 (with room to grow). With better injury luck and solid command of a new offense, Dart has the rare potential to jump into the elite fantasy ranks at quarterback. If both players break out -- even in the fantasy world -- it will likely mean good things for the Giants on the field. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: 2 New York Giants named 2026 fantasy football breakout candidates

(Original Caption) DALLAS, TEXAS-01/01/67-: Don Meredith (17) of the Dallas Cowboys, looks downfield for a pass receiver during NFL Pro title game against the Green Bay Packers. It is Day 36 of our 100-day countdown to kickoff. We are looking back at the 100 most iconic games in Dallas Cowboys history. The countdown will leads us right up to the opening game of 2026. Our look back doesnt depend on just one criteria for our rankings. We take into consideration things like how big the game was for the organization, how memorable the game was, games that had unusual events take place, games that are a part of NFL lore, Cowboys firsts, and games where the Cowboys just plain dominated. Variety is the spice of life and we have all different kind of Cowboys games to review. At the bottom, well link each day of the countdown so you can go back and check out any you missed. Were giving you an interesting one for Day 36 on our 100-day countdown to kickoff, when we revisit the first great heartbreak in Cowboys history. The Packers came to the Cotton Bowl to face Dallas in the 1966 NFL Championship Game, which was held on New Years Day 1967. The winner would represent the NFL in the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game, now known as Super Bowl I.Sunday, January 1, 1967 4:05 p.m. ETCotton Bowl, Dallas, TexasFinal Score: Green Bay Packers 34, Dallas Cowboys 27Dallas, a seven-season expansion franchise, had never achieved a winning record or postseason appearance. However, under the guidance of Tom Landry, their young team went 10-3-1, clinched the Eastern Conference title, and earned the privilege of hosting Vince Lombardis defending champions, the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay arrived at 12-2, boasting a roster brimming with championship experience. While Dallas possessed talent, speed, and ambition, this was their first encounter with the immense pressure of contending for a league title. The difference in experience was immediately apparent. Green Bay opened with a touchdown drive, capped off by Bart Starrs 17-yard pass to Elijah Pitts. On the ensuing kickoff, Packers rookie Jim Grabowski returned a fumble 18 yards for another touchdown, leaving Dallas trailing 14-0 despite not having run a single offensive play. The Cowboys resilience would eventually define the franchise, even though it could have overwhelmed a team making its first playoff appearance. After a 13-play possession directed by Don Meredith, Dan Reeves completed a three-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14 before the first quarter ended.Dallas then attacked again, with Don Perkins breaking through for a 23-yard touchdown, erasing the entire deficit. The comeback showed Dallas belonged on the same field, but Starr kept finding ways to restore Green Bays advantage. Early in the second quarter, he struck Carroll Dale for a 51-yard touchdown. Meredith responded by moving Dallas deep into Packers territory, helped by a 40-yard completion to Reeves, but the drive stopped near the goal line. Danny Villanuevas short field goal made it 21-17 rather than producing another tie.Dallas moved even closer in the third quarter. Warren Livingston recovered a fumble, and Meredith led another long possession before Villanueva hit another field goal from 32 yards. The Cowboys were now one point behind at 21-20, and the Cotton Bowl could sense the established champions beginning to feel real pressure from the leagues newest contender.Green Bays response was immediate. Starr completed a 40-yard pass to Dale and then found Boyd Dowler for a 16-yard touchdown, restoring an eight-point margin. In the fourth quarter, the Packers quarterback survived a fierce Dallas pass rush and converted a third-and-long with a 28-yard touchdown throw to Max McGee. Bob Lilly blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 34-20 and keeping Dallas within two touchdowns. The blocked kick mattered almost immediately. Facing third-and-20 on the next possession, Meredith went deep to Frank Clarke, who broke free for a 68-yard touchdown. Villanuevas extra point cut the deficit to 34-27. A game that appeared to be slipping away had suddenly become another one-score fight. Dallas defense then gave the offense one final opportunity. Green Bay tried to run down the clock, but Dave Edwards sacked Starr, Willie Townes disrupted a screen and the Cowboys stopped Jim Taylor behind the line. A hurried Packers punt traveled only 17 yards, allowing Dallas to take possession at the Green Bay 47 with 2:12 remaining.Meredith found Clarke for 21 yards, Perkins added four more and a pass-interference penalty placed the ball at the Packers two-yard line. Dallas had four chances to score the touchdown that could have forced overtime. Instead, the opportunity slowly came apart. Reeves gained one yard, a false start pushed Dallas backward and another pass fell incomplete. A third-down completion moved the ball back to the two, leaving the season on one final snap.Green Bay linebacker Dave Robinson recognized the fourth-down rollout and attacked Meredith from behind. Robinson jammed Bob Hayes at the line, broke into the backfield and wrapped up the quarterback before he could properly deliver the ball. Meredith somehow released a desperate pass, but safety Tom Brown intercepted it in the end zone with 28 seconds remaining. Dallas had reached the doorstep of football history and finished two yards short. This game belongs on the countdown because it established both the promise and the pain that became intertwined with early Cowboys history. Dallas had gone from expansion irrelevance to within one play of defeating Lombardis Packers and reaching the first Super Bowl. The Cowboys proved they could compete with the NFLs defining dynasty, but they also began building a reputation as a talented team that could reach the biggest stage without finishing the job.#Cowboys vs #Packers1966NFL Championship GameCowboys first postseason gameFinal Score: Green Bay Packers 34, Dallas Cowboys 27#DallasCowboys #NFL(:@nfl) pic.twitter.com/4sjsbWUUtq Mike Poland (@kenfigkowboy) August 8, 2026Interesting Facts About the GameThis was the first postseason game in Dallas Cowboys history. Dodgers Shohei Ohtani takes major step in return to mound
Shohei Ohtani last threw off a mound on July 22 in Philadelphia. If MLBs most famous two-way player has thrown a baseball since then, hes done so out of sight of the media that follow his and the Los Angeles Dodgers every move. That changed on Saturday, Aug. 8, when Ohtani played catch before the Dodgers game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.Ohtani was at least a candidate to receive National League Cy Young Award votes, if not win the award, when injuries limited him to hitting duties after his July 3 start against the San Diego Padres. In 14 starts this season, Ohtani is 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA. The Dodgers dont necessarily need Ohtani on the mound to repeat as World Series champions. However, getting him back would boost an already star-studded rotation and bolster Ohtanis chances to win the NL Most Valuable Player award.MORE: Dodgers trade for 2 former catchers immediately before MLB deadlineMore to come on this story.

Orioles announce Samuel Basalloupdateafter 16 consecutive missed games
The Baltimore Orioles made a shocking move at this years trade deadline, dealing longtime face of the franchise and switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox.While the move was heartbreaking for fans, it made sense for one clear reason. The Orioles have their catcher of the future locked up in Samuel Basallo. Basallo inked a long-term extension last year that runs through the 2033 season, and the organization extended him after just four big-league games. That belief in him looks like one of the best decisions president of baseball operations Mike Elias has ever made. This year, Basallo has broken out, posting a .241 batting average, .305 on-base percentage, .756 OPS, 16 home runs and 46 RBIs across 86 games.Unfortunately, Basallo is currently on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation and has missed 16 consecutive games. However, he has been making progress, and on Saturday manager Craig Albernaz announced a positive update. He revealed that Basallo was able to throw from 90 feet for a second straight day and is fairly close to beginning a hitting program, according to Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun.Given that Basallo suffered a shoulder injury, throwing and hitting will be the two biggest tests before he heads out on a rehab assignment. As a catcher who will now shoulder even more of the workload with Rutschman gone, his ability to throw out baserunners is important. His arm strength and accuracy behind the plate are a big part of his defensive value, and the Orioles need to be certain those have not been compromised before putting him back in games. As for hitting, that matters just as much. Getting Basallo back healthy and swinging the bat freely is essential for a team that is trying to salvage what is looking like a lost season.
