    Death at a Funeral
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - AUGUST 08: Manager Dan Wilson of the Seattle Mariners argues with the umpire before being ejected during the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at T-Mobile Park on August 08, 2026 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Jack Compton/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesIm never sure what to think about 1995. Im about the same age as Cal Raleigh, and neither of us had been born. Ive picked up the key points over the years. Ken Griffey Jr. was cool. Edgar Martinez was wise. Randy Johnson was wild. Jay Buhner was bald. And Lou Piniella was pissed. These are the characters who saved baseball in Seattle. I can imagine the impact of that team through the voice of Dave Nieahus, through his reverence, his honesty. I can quantify their greatness in a spreadsheet. I can only smile politely when those clips are played. But for all Ive been told, for all my gentle nods, Ive never been able to place Dan Wilson. Hes always been there, as a player, an ambassador, a broadcaster or a coach; in all the pictures and at all the parties; forever standing in the background, affably. Im not sure what he represents or how loud to clap. There are no clues in his FanGraphs page or in his persona. Theres nothing to discern in his Funko Popvacancy its lone identifying trait. I only know that he was there, and that he is here, sitting on my shelf, forever staring past me.What does he see?Hes seen Olivo take his job, Sexson sulk, and Figgins in the outfield. Hes seen the #6 Org, with its stomach bugs, soggy arms, sprinkler heads, and warning tracks; posers, brain spiders and broken promises. Hes Believed in slogans and prospect lists and righteous indignation; Driveline and PEDs and left-on-left splits. Hes seen greatness come and quickly go, or stay too long, or return and spoil. Too many characters to list, too few to remember, most summed up in a word. Ill let you pick. These are my Mariners. The naughts. A symbol more than a celebration. Decorated with baseball, rather than embodying it. Forever looking towards a time that doesnt exist. I display them in my life not quite with pride but a perverse sense of duty, or marketing, or irony, or yes maybe pride. Never, ever the protagonists.Still, I watch. I write. I give myself, for a glimpse behind those plastic eyes. To see what they see. To know this team. To stay just a few more years.Suddenly its there, in a blink, in a lifetime. The Mariners honored 50 players before Saturdays game to celebrate their 50th season. It was a fairly predictable ceremony, as the team seems to find something to celebrate in this fashion once a summer. It was nice. The University of Washington marching band kicked things off with the Mariners nautical theme song, before diving into their pep band set list for what felt like a bit too long. A hype reel followed, with the standard fare of classic highlights and a voice over delivering the first platitudes of the evening. They eventually got to the point and announced the 50 most notable Mariners alumni. Players were brought out by era, old guys first. The full list wasnt too surprising or controversial. It was cool to see guys I wasnt thinking about ahead of time, like JJ Putz, Kazuhiro Sasaki, and Raul Ibanez. And it was cool to see some personal favorites, like Mitch Haniger, James Paxton, and Hisashi Iwakuma. The cheers outweighed the boos for Alex Rodriguez and Dan Wilson. The only living players who didnt show up were Robinson Can, Kyle Seager, Freddy Garca, and Luis Castillo. There were seven players from the active roster (and eight if you count Castillo). The only snub I could think of was Eugenio Surez, but I understand why he wasnt included. After they called 40 or so names chronologically, they brought out the inner circle guys like Alvin Davis, Jay Buhner, and Flix Hernndez. They finished by having the quartet of true Hall of Famers (Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, and Ichiro) walk in from center field. Again, it was nice.Next came a longer montage on the history of the team. This one was great, I thought, with much more than the standard highlights youve seen too often. They showcased lots of great Mariners-y things, like individual performances and minor accolades and commercials. Rick Rizzs did the voice over with another round of platitudes. The video faded to the podium with a tuxedod Rizzs offering a few more platitudes before handing the mic to Alvin Davis. I was excited for this, as we generally dont get to hear from Davis, despite his status as Mr. Mariner. His speech was OK. He talked about the Mariners identity: Loyal, steady, kind thats a Mariner. And he noted the orgs tendency to hold on for dear life to its history, pointing to Wilson and Edgar in the dugout. He eventually fell into the corny routine of trying to hype up the current squad and told them to go win a World Series. Outsiders have doubted this franchise for 40 years (sic). Let that doubt fuel you. Prove them wrong. We believe in you. Prove us right.John Stanton was next to the stage, the boos covered with yet another highlight package, this time honoring Rizzs. But instead of more platitudes, Stanton got right to the point. He thanked Rizzs for 41 years with the team and announced he would be inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame. For many Mariners fans, the voice of the summer is Rick Rizzs, Stanton said. This was a very touching moment, with the players and crowd giving a tremendous ovation while Rizzs failed to fight back tears.Rizzs took the podium again, clearly flustered by the news again, very touching. He thanked a bunch of people and quipped he was honored to be the shortest member of the Mariners Hall of Fame. Rizzs then announced Lou Piniella, who was yet to be seen, would throw out the first pitch to Wilson. Piniella appeared and all the players got off the stage and huddled around him while he made the toss. This was the best part of the night, as all the alums stood in the middle of the field and commiserated. A-Rod gave Wilson a huge hug. Haniger and J.P. did some catching up. Mike Moore talked Logan Gilberts ear off. Buhner and Flix exchanged a chummy embrace. Dave Valle was micd up. For as much as these things can be a bit of an eye roll, given the frequency with which the organization insists on remembering itself, seeing all these people again was a good time. It was nice. Then the game began. Turns out it was still the 2026 Mariners. They lost 3-2.George Kirby got the start, shortly after being named one of the 50. He was just OK. He couldnt find the zone at times and struggled to coax much chase or whiff at others, with the Rays fouling off tons of pitches. He nearly made it through four innings with a 1-0 lead, but with two outs, Victor Mesa Jr. got hold of an up-and-in fastball and crushed a game-tying homer to right. A pair of singles followed and things looked like they might get away for Kirby. But he got a pop up in foul territory that Cal Raleigh made a fantastic sliding catch on, despite a competing effort from Kirby.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video.Michael Rucker took the ball for the sixth. It wasnt pretty. He loaded the bases on an error from Brendan Donovan, a single, and a walk. Richie Palacios battled and battled and picked up a two-out, two-strike single to plate a pair of runs and give the Rays a 3-1 lead. They wouldnt score again, and they wouldnt need to.The Mariners offense wasnt terrible, but it certainly wasnt enough. Casey Legumina got the start for the Rays, the first leg in a bullpen day (starter Griffin Jax was scratched with an injury shortly before the game). Legumina got the ball to Cam Booser with one out in the second inning, the game still tied at zero. Naylor quickly changed that, taking Booser deep on the first pitch he threw.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video.Donovan immediately singled and Raleigh walked, and it looked like the Mariners might have a chance for a big inning with just one out. But they were turned away from there. Then they went in order in the third. Naylor picked up a double in the fourth, but nothing came of it. Then they went in order in the fifth and sixth. They wouldnt get another base runner until Naylor went deep again in the seventh. It was a three extra base hit day for Naylor, the lone bright spot in this one.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video.Things got heated in the sixth. Julio Rodrguez struck out looking on a pitch out of the zone to end the inning. Julio immediately and I mean immediately tapped his head to challenge. The ump said he didnt challenge in time, which wasnt true. It seemed the ump wasnt paying attention. Julio started to give him the business, before Dan Wilson came crashing in, kicking and screaming, about as livid as Ive ever seen him. Wilson eventually got run, and Manny Acta jumped in to drag him away. But Acta midway through heard something from the umpire he didnt like either and started yelling himself. Eventually the crew chief came over and escorted them back to the dugout. Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video. The episode turned the game over to the boo birds, whod been booing the team generally the last few home games and were now booing every pitch called by the umpire. It didnt help the Rays asked for (and were granted) a challenge in the next inning.Down 3-2, Cole Young led off the eighth with a single. But Randy Arozarena nearly hit into a double play, and Dominic Canzone did hit into a double play to end the threat. Julio led off the ninth with a single. But Naylor just missed another homer and Donovan hit into a double play to wrap things up. The Mariners fell to 56-62 and four games out of the AL West. And so that was it. A nice ceremony for some nice people, followed by a Mariners loss. See you at 100.

Lakers urged not to sign $46M ex-Warriors NBA champion, focus on Klay Thompson, PJ Washington
Lakers urged not to sign $46M ex-Warriors NBA champion, focus on Klay Thompson, PJ Washington originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Lakers have been all-in on Jonathan Kuminga since LeBron James informed the team that he would no longer be returning. However, it has been a lengthy process for Los Angeles to get a deal done.Even throughout this process, the Lakers have not wavered and remain focused on Kuminga. Landing a deal for the young forward remains LA's top priority as the offseason continues.Jonathan Kuminga remains the Lakers' top free agent target before finishing their offseason. As the Cavaliers have pivoted to chasing Peyton Watson, Kuminga is the sole focus currently for Los Angeles. There could soon be momentum gathering on Kuminga to LA via sign-and-trade," NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote. With the Lakers seemingly being Kuminga's preferred destination, it still appears that his camp and the Atlanta Hawks are creating obstacles to a potential sign-and-trade. Nothing has moved in weeks, largely because Atlanta has not been satisfied with the trade package it could receive in return. It has reached the second month of what has become a second consecutive prolonged Kuminga free agency process. The Lakers met with Kuminga in the early hours of free agency, pitching him on a high-minutes role for a high-profile fringe contender in desperate need of athletic help on the wing. The opportunity appealed to Kuminga, but the sign-and-trade contract offer (years, money, package going back to Atlanta) didn't satisfy all sides. The Lakers remain interested in him, league sources said, but movement toward a deal has remained stalled for weeks, ESPNs Anthony Slater wrote. With the process continuing to drag on, the Lakers have now been urged to move on from Kuminga and prioritize a trade for either Klay Thompson or P.J. Washington.Obviously, anything can change during the NBA offseason, as Kuminga could have a change of heart or decide Los Angeles is the best situation for him, but it seems like it is time for the storied franchise to move on. Perhaps the Lakers should focus on trading for Klay Thompson or P.J. Washington, both of whom have experience playing with Doncic, SIs Ryan Ward wrote. At this point, it is fair to say that moving on from Kuminga would not necessarily be a bad idea. The Lakers have been pursuing him for nearly two months, and nothing has been finalized.Kuminga was on a $46 million contract last season, while the Lakers are looking for someone who can make an immediate impact. It remains unclear whether Kuminga would be able to do that right away, but Thompson and Washington have already proven themselves throughout their careers. For the Lakers, the decision ultimately comes down to how long they are willing to wait for Kuminga versus how quickly they can find another option to strengthen the roster around Luka Doncic.More NBA news:Cavaliers, Hawks, Clippers, Bucks in bidding war for $11M NBA champion, 23-year-old young starLakers' Austin Reaves' future in limbo after Walker Kessler's blockbuster trade, says NBA insiderHeat, Warriors, Cavaliers reportedly in battling for $305M future Hall of Famer, 17-year veteranLakers trade idea ships Dalton Knecht, Jarred Vanderbilt for $46M NBA champion in mega 3-team deal

Barcelona growing increasingly optimistic about signing World Cup winner
Barcelona growing increasingly optimistic about signing World Cup winnerBarcelona are currently involved in two of the most talked about transfer sagas in European football right now in Rodri and Julian Alvarez.Rodri, in particular, has generated a lot of buzz in recent days after the midfielder chose to join Barcelona ahead of a move to Real Madrid.Barcelona, though, must reach an agreement with Manchester City if they are to get their hands on the Spanish World Cup winner.Optimism in the Barcelona campRodri is keen on joining Barcelona. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)According to Diario SPORT, there is total optimism within Barcelona regarding their chances of signing Rodri, with the club now treating the midfielder as their absolute priority. The Catalans have already presented an improved offer to Manchester City, having realised their initial proposal of 45 million plus 5 million in variables fell well short of the English clubs demands. The report cites sources within the club insist they are on the right track, with one claiming the most difficult steps have already been taken and that it is now simply a case of finishing the job.The most significant of those steps, in Barcelonas eyes, has been securing the players desire to join. Rodri is understood to have already informed City directly that he wants to move to Barcelona, a crucial development that the club insist eliminates the risk of any late change of heart or rival hijack. The hard part remainsBarcelona are not underestimating Man Citys negotiating position. (Photo by Annabel Lee-Ellis/Getty Images)Despite the confidence, Barcelona are under no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead.Rodri still belongs to City, and the Premier League champions hold the final say on any fee.Barcelona are aware they cannot underestimate Citys negotiating position, particularly given the initial bid never stood a realistic chance of getting the deal done. The next offer is expected to move considerably closer to Citys valuation, and Barcelona accept they will have to make a significant financial effort to turn their current optimism into a concrete agreement. Still, the belief internally is that Rodris determination to join will ultimately help bridge the gap.For now, then, Barcelona wait, hopeful that one of the summers most ambitious operations can be completed.

Manchester United target Guardiola-approved excellent star but face 100m asking price
Manchester United target Guardiola-approved excellent star but face 100m asking priceManchester United are interested in signing the Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.According to CaughtOffside, they will face competition from clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid. The 22-year-old is highly rated in England, and he has a bright future. He has already established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League, and he will only improve with coaching and experience. He has been hailed as excellent by Pep Guardiola. However, Crystal Palace will demand 100 million for the player, and that could be a major problem. Manchester United have already invested in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. They could use another player who can control the tempo of the game and protect the team defensively. However, they are likely to be priced out of a move for the English midfielder.Wharton has been linked with a move away from Crystal Palace in recent months. He could be attracted to the idea of joining a bigger club. Manchester United will be able to provide him with Champions League football and the platform to fight for trophies. It will be interesting to see if they are prepared to test the resolve of the London club with an attractive offer before the window closes. Someone like Wharton could take the Manchester United midfield to a whole new level. They will be hoping to do well next season and fight for trophies. They need top-quality players in order to compete with Arsenal and Manchester City.Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking to add more control in the middle of the park, and it is no surprise that they are keen on the Crystal Palace star. However, they will not be able to offer him Champions League football next season, and that could be a problem when it comes to attracting elite talents.Leave a ReplyCancel replyYour email address will not be published.
