Commanders' best option to replace Laremy Tunsil already on roster
The Washington Commanders received devastating news on Saturday. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil was injured during practice and helped off the field. Early reports said Tunsil would undergo further testing, but it was later revealed that he tore his pec. Now, Tunsil will miss a significant portion, if not all, of the upcoming 2026 season. What does that mean for the Commanders? Well, they have a giant-sized hole to fill at one of the NFL's premium positions. Washington traded for Tunsil in March 2025. In a season full of disappointment, Tunsil certainly didn't disappoint. He was so good that the Commanders gave him a two-year extension of an average annual value of over $30 million per season, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Washington has some internal options to replace Tunsil. Andrew Wylie is often mentioned as a candidate because he sometimes fills in for him at practice, but that's not realistic. Wylie is good, but he's better suited to play right tackle or either guard position. Veteran Trent Scott remains on the roster, too. But the most obvious candidate is the man who played left tackle before Tunsil and filled in for him at the conclusion of last season: Brandon Coleman. A third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Coleman played 16 games as a rookie, all at left tackle, and started 12 games. Washington went 12-5 with Coleman playing left tackle and Jayden Daniels at quarterback. However, GM Adam Peters wanted more at the position, leading to the trade for Tunsil, one of the all-time greats. Initially, it was expected that Coleman would play right tackle, but the Commanders selected Josh Conerly Jr. in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to play there. Coleman settled in at left guard, starting the first two games last season before he was benched. Coleman would serve as a blocking tight end at times for Washington last season before Tunsil was injured late in the season. While the injury wasn't serious, the Commanders weren't going to put Tunsil out there for the final few games in a lost season. So, Coleman went back to left tackle and started the final three games. He played well. This spring and now into training camp, Coleman is again competing with Chris Paul for the left guard job. But that competition could be over, as Coleman could be going back to tackle. For his final two starts, Pro Football Focus graded Coleman at 79.1 and 82, respectively, in pass protection. Coleman's run blocking is solid. And Washington will employ zone blocking in 2026 under new offensive coordinator David Blough, which is a positive for Coleman due to his athleticism. While no player can replace someone of Tunsil's credentials, Washington is fortunate to have Coleman. There was some talk on social media that the Commanders could move Conerly to left tackle. Could he handle it? Probably. But it would be a bad idea. He was settling in at right tackle last season and has had a strong offseason. It makes the most sense to keep Conerly at right tackle and slide Coleman over to left tackle. On a day to honor Yankees' past, rookie George Lombard Jr.'s impact resonates
NEW YORK Back in 2009, Mariano Rivera wouldnt have planned to arrive at Old-Timers Day 2026 as part of the last Yankees world championship team. Its unbelievable, the Hall of Fame closer said. But its the truth. At every turn Saturday afternoon, there was someone on the Yanks alumni roster who rode up the Canyon of Heroes.Hopefully, this is the year, Rivera said of the 26 team, closer to third place than first. Hopefully, the big boy comes back, everybody (does) their job and well be OK.Without Aaron Judge (rib fracture) its been a daily struggle for runs since mid-June, pressuring a pitching staff thats been a signature team strength.Stuck in this awkward Waiting-for-Judge stretch, desperate for a spark, the Yankees summoned George Lombard Jr. from Triple-A.And late Saturday afternoon, it was Lombards all-around game and Spencer Jones two RBI boosting Gerrit Coles solid start that made a difference. Two Yankees rookies, playing starring roles in a 5-4 win against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.George Lombard Jr.'s early impactSeems like hes right at home, Cole said of Lombard, with a key walk against veteran lefty ace Chris Sale in a two-run fifth, and an opposite-field homer vs. Victor Mederos in the seventh.Since Tuesday, the Yanks are 3-1 in Lombards games and hes impacted each victory, with his sharp defense and big arm at shortstop and his batting approach.Lombard homered in his debut (2-0 win), was part of Fridays ninth-inning comeback (3-2 win) and led off Saturdays fifth with a walk after successfully ABS challenging consecutive two-strike Sale pitches. After a hit-by-pitch call was overturned on Jones, the lefty slugger followed with a game-tying RBI triple to center, his second RBI hit off the tough lefty ace.Ben Rice would add an important solo homer in the eighth, but this Yankee win could be traced to Lombards two bold challenges. That was as big as anythingthat set us up to win a game, said manager Aaron Boone. More good swings, more quality long at-bats, including a nine-pitch encounter, where Lombard fouled off two tough Sale pitches before striking out.Hes in (the at-bat) the whole way and its just super competitive, said Boone. He controls the zone and hes strong and hes got power. Hes done outstanding. The confidence game Immediately following the Old-Timers Day game, George set the (early) tone, Cole said of Lombards rangy backhand play and strong throw to retire Drake Baldwin, fielding it like he was half-asleep.Since his callup, everybodys kind of welcomed me and gave me the confidence to keep doing my thing, keep playing my game, said Lombard, 21.At each level up the Yankees system, Lombard has experienced an early, challenging adjustment period.Yet, the more Ive done it over the years, the more comfortable Ive beenfiguring how that level is going to attack you.Its a humbling game. Just try to get a little better, said Lombard, who was already asking about Sundays Atlanta starter Grant Holmes scouting report, per Jones. He wants to work hard, he wants to win, Jones said of his friend Lombard. His success so far hasnt surprised me one bit.Gerrit Cole's latest pinstriped milestoneIn the fifth inning, Coles strikeout of Matt Olson was his 1,000th as a Yankee. It was really cool to do it today, Cole said of being at home, with family and Yankees royalty present on Old-Timers Day.Im really thankful to get to do it in front of a lot of great Yankees today. That just puts the bow on top.Cole reached the milestone faster in both games (139) and innings (837.2) than any of the previous 12 Yankees pitchers to accomplish it.What drew Aaron Boone's ire SaturdayBoth managers had their issues with plate ump Dan Merzel, starting with Walt Weiss getting ejected over a questionable balk on Sale that plated with the go-ahead run in the fifth.Boone got heated with Merzel (but was not ejected) about an automatic strike in another of Jose Caballeros at-bats.They got him for circumvention (of the rule, being engaged with the pitcher by the eight-second mark).Boone said Caballero was at 11 seconds when they called a strike. In any event, they have to warn him, said Boone, who complained of petty stuff going on with the umpiring crew that uncalled for.Per Boone, Caballero has been operating within the updated guidelines of engagement, unless I get a new memo from the league that changes it again. This article originally appeared on NorthJersey.com: On a day to honor Yankees' past, rookie George Lombard Jr.'s impact resonates

UConn football QB competition features three friends, not rivals
STORRS, Conn.UConn'sfootball teamhasa good problem. With just under a month until the Huskies season opener againstLafayette,first-year coachJason Candlehas yet to name a starterat quarterback. So far, three players have stood out all of thempossessingdifferentskillsets and different cases to be the starter in Week 1.Jake Merklinger, KaliebOsborneand Tucker McDonald each could make the argument the job should be theirs, and none of them are shy about competing for it.But ask any of the three what they want most out of this competition, and the answer hasnothing to do with beating the other two.Itswatching them succeed. Were pretty tight, Merklinger said after practice on Saturday, Aug. 8.I thinkit'sa unique dynamic being in a quarterbackcompetitionespecially during fallcampbecauseyou'respending every waking moment with each other. You wake up at 6 a.m. andyou'rewith each other, and thenyou'rewith each other all the way, to 8 or 9 p.m. at night.Obviously, we compete with each other, and it's really competitive because we all want the same thing.Butat the same time, we like to have fun and be around each other.Candle hasbeen impressed with each quarterbacks preparation and willingness tocompete, butstill believes theres room for improvement.I think all three guys have done a really good job of understanding what we're trying to teach in the meeting room and how we're trying to apply that to the practice field, Candle said. Each guy hashad somereally highmoments. All three guys have had some low moments too. So, werealong way fromhome on anyon any of those guys and where this thing ends up and where it goes.ButImencouraged by all three of them.Merklinger, a transfer from Tennessee, was ahighly toutedprospect out of high school. Theredshirtsophomoredidntsee the field much in his two seasons atTennessee, but UConn is hoping to unlock the talent that saw him receive multiple Power 4 offers.Merklinger said the best attribute he brings is his ability to read defenses. He attributes thatskillto the coaching he received growing upaswellashaving an older brother who played on the offensive line.I wasblessed with really good coaches from middle school to high school to college, and obviously my older brother, he playsoffensiveline,Merklingersaid.SoI wasalways just getting his take on protections, rungame situations and things like that.SoI'llgive shout out to older brother, butalso just the coaches.Osborne comes to Storrs with familiarity in Candles system. The junior played mostly as a backup lastseason at Toledo butbroke out when he gotto start in the Boca Raton Bowl against Louisville. In that game, Osborne completed 17 of 28 passes for178 yardsand a score. He also rushed for 77 yards on 18 carries.Offensive coordinator Nunzio Campanile said Osborne, a dual-threat quarterback, is 'as gifted a thrower asI'veever been around.'Osborne believes his time with Candle hashelped him get adjusted to the newoffensivesystem at UConn. Its helped a lot when it comes to learningthelittlethings, he said. We preach operating and leading every day. I feel like the operation hasbeen getting better with me and knowing where my guys are at and wheretheyregoing to be at.McDonald isthe wild card of the group. A redshirt freshman who arrived at UConn with less fanfare than Merklinger or Osborne, McDonaldhasimpressed with his poise in the pocket.Teammates and coaches have pointed to his intangibles and his scrambling abilityashis biggest strengths. When asked what he feels his biggest strength is, McDonald said, My decision making. My ability to extend plays and knowing where the ball should go most of the time before the snap. With fall camp just getting into the swing of things, Candle is taking histime innaming his starter. For Merklinger, Osborne and McDonald, that means more early mornings andlonger days together. At the end of the day, we just want whats best, Osborne said. Coach is going to make the right decision for the team. So, we just worry about each other anditsjust all competition for the team because this is the ultimate team sport. This article originally appeared on The Bulletin: UConn football QB competition features three friends, not rivals

Danny Chew continues his million-mile cycling dream after injury
For most people, riding a million miles on a bicycle sounds impossible. For Danny Chew, it became a lifelong mission. Known as the "Million-Mile Man," Chew spent decades pushing his body and mind through extreme cycling challenges, including long-distance races and thousands of miles on the road. However, a devastating spinal cord injury changed his journey overnight. Instead of giving up on his dream, he found a new way to continue chasing it.Chew developed his love for cycling while he was in college. The sport quickly became more than a hobby, and he created the Dirty Dozen, a challenging cycling event in Pittsburgh known for its steep climbs. He discovered that longer races suited him better, allowing him to test his endurance and determination. His dedication eventually led him to victory in the Race Across America, one of the worlds most demanding endurance cycling competitions, which he won in 1996 and 1999.The million-mile goal became a personal challenge that represented a lifetime of commitment. Chew spent years building his cycling record, often completing incredible distances that most riders would find overwhelming. During one of his regular endurance trips, where he aimed to ride 1,000 miles in a single week, everything changed. He suddenly became dizzy, lost control of his bicycle, and crashed into a ditch. The accident left him unable to move anything below his chest. The freedom he had always experienced through cycling was suddenly taken away. After spending time in the hospital, Chew faced a difficult emotional period as he adjusted to his new reality. Losing the ability to ride a traditional bicycle was a painful experience for someone whose entire life had revolved around movement and independence. However, Chew refused to see the injury as the end of his cycling story. Instead, he treated recovery as another challenge to overcome. He began training on a handcycle, a specially designed bicycle powered by the arms rather than the legs. Although the journey would take longer than originally planned, it gave him a renewed sense of freedom and purpose.Chew estimated that he still needed hundreds of thousands of miles to complete his million-mile goal. By building strength and maintaining a consistent training schedule, he believed he could continue progressing toward the dream he had created decades earlier. The timeline had changed, but the goal remained alive. For Chew, the handcycle represents more than a piece of equipment. It represents independence, determination, and the ability to move beyond limitations. While a wheelchair became part of his daily life after the accident, the handcycle allowed him to experience the feeling of being on a bicycle again.Danny Chews story is not only about cycling distance. It is about resilience and the choice to keep moving forward after unexpected challenges. His million-mile journey may take longer than planned, but his determination continues to inspire people who follow his remarkable path.

Liverpool may move for 50m midfielder as Premier League rivals make bid
Liverpool may move for 50m midfielder as Premier League rivals make bidLamine Camara transfer latest as Crystal Palace test Monaco stanceCrystal Palace have moved early in the race for Foot Mercato reported target Lamine Camara, with an offer now said to be on the table for the AS Monaco midfielder. The 22-year-old is attracting growing Premier League attention after an impressive 2025-26 campaign, and the developing picture points towards a competitive market before any deal is concluded.Monacos position appears clear. The Ligue 1 club are not prepared to entertain a sale below 50m, a valuation that sets the tone for every interested side. Nottingham Forest are also described as serious contenders and could yet match that number, with an official approach believed to be close.Crystal Palace make first movePalaces willingness to act decisively may give them an early foothold, especially when the player is under contract until 2029 and Monaco are under no pressure to sell. Camaras stock has risen sharply thanks to a season in which he combined maturity, athleticism and composure in central areas. He made 30 appearances across 2025-26 and contributed decisively on five occasions, including four assists. There is also context to the admiration around him. Camara enhanced his reputation in major fixtures, particularly against Paris Saint-Germain, where his level reportedly stood out. That matters in recruitment discussions, because clubs weighing a 42.8m equivalent investment will want proof a player can perform when the stakes are highest.Liverpool interest remains in backgroundLiverpool and Manchester United are both credited with interest, although neither club is currently pushing at the same pace. For now, the suggestion is that both are waiting rather than accelerating. That does not remove them from the equation, it simply means they may be assessing price, squad priority and the shape of the market before deciding whether to act.For Liverpool, the Lamine Camara transfer story is one to monitor closely. The club may yet decide that patience is the smartest route if Palace and Nottingham Forest help clarify Monacos minimum expectations. With AS Monaco holding firm and multiple English clubs circling, this looks like a situation that could gather momentum quickly. Our ViewFrom a Liverpool supporters perspective, this feels like one of those reports worth taking seriously without assuming a deal is imminent. Camara has the profile that makes sense, young, proven in a strong European league, tactically flexible and already showing he can influence big matches. If Liverpools recruitment team are genuinely tracking him, there will be good reasons for that. The price is the obvious issue. 50m is major money for a player who is still developing, and Liverpool will want to be certain he is a starter-level addition rather than simply a talented option. Even so, the market rarely waits for long on midfielders with this kind of upside. If Palace and Nottingham Forest are prepared to be aggressive, Liverpool risk losing the chance to shape the conversation. What gives fans hope is that waiting does not always mean hesitation. It can mean due diligence, internal discussion and choosing the right moment. If the club believe Camara can become a top Premier League midfielder, then this is exactly the sort of move supporters would want Liverpool to win. He sounds dynamic, resilient and upwardly mobile, and those are qualities any ambitious squad should be targeting. For now, it feels open. But if this interest is real, plenty of Liverpool fans will be hoping the club do more than just watch from a distance.

Porto’s Rodrigo Mora offered to Roma
Portos Rodrigo Mora offered to RomaGian Piero Gasperini had already realized it three days ago, following his meeting with the clubs management: the long-awaited left-back wouldnt arrive anytime soon. The coachs comments after the last friendly confirmed the ongoing wait, while Tony DAmico works to unlock Romas attacking transfer window. The list remains headed by the usual two names, in order of preference: Antonio Nusa and Malick Fofana. Leipzig continues to ask 60 million for the Norwegian, while the Lyon talent has a lower value, around 45 million, but is less convincing due to his physical condition. Theres also a transfer tangle surrounding the Belgian: the agents of Fofana and Diomande, following the latters sale to Real Madrid, have offered the Lyon winger to Leipzig. As Il Messaggero reports, DAmico is persistently trying to get involved in the race for Endrick. The Brazilian would like to play his chances at Mourinhos Real Madrid, even though his playing time is likely to be limited. Roma are still waiting, trying to outmaneuver the English clubs. The Giallorossi have also been offered Rodrigo Mora from Porto, but the 2007-born player is now one step away from joining Galatasaray.

Some Celtic fans reckon Claudio Braga is worth signing for his song
Some Celtic fans reckon Claudio Braga is worth signing for his songIs Claudio Braga really a target? And if so, where does he fit in? Amusingly several Celtic supporters have joked that hed be worth signing for his song!Hearts star Claudio Braga is reportedly on Celtics radar, with several outlets claiming that hes a target of the Hoops as they look to further bolster their attacking options.Signed last summer for an undisclosed fee from Norwegian first division side Aalesunds FK, 26 year old Braga was arguably the best player in the Scottish top flight last season, as the Jambos came within a whisker of winning a historic first league title in nearly 70 years. The Portuguese attacker has scored an impressive 17 goals in 46 games, and registered numerous assists for the Jambos, and although hes suffered a lull in form recently, hes clearly a quality player as Scottish premiership level at least. Its perhaps no surprise that Celtic have been credited with an interest in the player whos enjoyed a remarkable rise these past 12 months, but they are not alone, with several English clubs, and many more further afield in Europe also credited with an interest in the 26 year old due to his stand-out performances for Hearts last season.Braga has shown that he can score and create chances for others in the Scottish Premiership so its no surprise that hes been linked with a move to Celtic. Perhaps Celtics name is being used, as it often is, to drum up interest elsewhere. Its an old agents trick we are all familiar with.So while we can take it with a pinch of salt, as is the case with most transfer rumours, its still worth asking ourselveswhere would Braga fit into this Celtic side?Braga is what is best described as a versatilestriker, in that he can play anywhere across the front three. If the much publicised deal for Haissem Hassan goes through, the Egyptian international will form an attacking partnership with both Camilo Duran, and Kasper Hogh. With Yang, Sebastian Tounekti, James Forrest, and Callum Osmand, also vying for a spot up top, it would be hard to see where Braga would fit in, and with a reported 5 million price tag on his head, he wouldnt be signing as a squad filler.Jota of Celtic scores their teams second goal during the Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC and theRangers at Celtic Park Stadium on September 03, 2022. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)Lets not forget about Jota whos also on the comeback trail, so it doesnt make much sense in splashing out a significant amount on another attacker, unless someone is heading for the exit door.Or it could well be that Martin ONeill is planning a tactical change, maybe 4-4-2 or 3-5-2?That would make room for Braga, as he excels in playing off the main striker, although he does adapt well to playing out on the left hand side of a three man forward line, as he did to great effect in the maroon of Hearts last season, so its possible that he could be on the clubs radar.25th January 2026; Tynecastle: Scottish Premiership, Hearts versus Celtic; Claudio Braga of Hearts shoots and scores to make it 2-2 in the 87th minute. Photo by Vagelis GeorgariouIts also possible that the Celtic coaches have identified Braga as a player they would like to see at the club, or he may even be a Martin ONeill selection and he would have his own ideas on how to use Braga in his Celtic team in a formation we have not seen for a few decades. Martin did say he was looking at this did he not/Personally, Id like to see Braga at Celtic, but I dont fully believe that he is high up on a list of Celtic targets. Gabriel Bortoleto refutes idea of F1 2026 cars clashing with driving styles
Motorsport photoGabriel Bortoleto has strongly argued that Formula 1 drivers should be able to adapt to any machinery, refuting the idea that the 2026 cars are clashing with driving styles. This year has seen a switch to more electrical machinery with a 47-53 split against the internal combustion engine, causing a different style of racing as battery management is key.Terms like superclipping have emerged, whereas the Belgian Grand Prix saw Oscar Piastri get caught out by the power units self-learning elements that take control away from a driver. So he called it a pretty crap way of going racing and this view is in line with the majority of drivers, whove so far disliked the new ruleset, causing changes to be implemented for 2027.Read Also:FIA confirms 2027 F1 power unit changesBut Bortoleto has come out on the defence by arguing motorsport shouldnt be about only one way of driving, the traditional style taught in karts by going slow in and fast out of a corner.I don't think I changed much my way of driving, said Bortoleto in Hungary last time out. But again, I don't like the sentence driving style, because I don't believe that a Formula 1 driver should ever say that.We should be able to adapt, even if it's not natural maybe, but we should be able to adapt to any type of car and the way you need to drive, that's why we do what we do and that's why we are the 22 drivers in the world doing Formula 1.I think it's just a matter of what car you have and how you need to drive them. I think from last year I didn't change much the way to drive, but obviously you fine-tune a bit here and there, you know how the energy deploys out of some corners, so you know if you can push more the entry and you care about less on the exit, because there is no energy being deployed there.Gabriel Bortoleto, Audi F1 TeamGabriel Bortoleto, Audi F1 TeamOr if you actually need to be a bit more careful on the entry, because there is going to be a long straight and a lot of energy being deployed, so you need to change, like last year was always constant, so you didn't have to do so.It comes amid the debate that the new cars make drivers less in control, with Piastri being a prime example of that, alongside Lando Norris forced overtake on Lewis Hamilton in Japan. But those world-class drivers are still towards the top of the championship and maximising whats at their disposal, with Norris and Hamilton both claiming victories this year.SoBortoleto claims that the cream has still risen to the top, just like in any era of F1, regardless of what car might suit what particular kind of driving.Do you seeVerstappen being slow? Do you see a seven-time world champion being slow this year? Do you see Leclerc being slow? I don't see them being slow, argued the Audi driver.I still see them very competitive, so I wouldn't say fast drivers are slow actually. Lewis is a bit better than he was doing last year; Max is still performing like crazy, putting that car on the top; Lando, the world champion, the reigning world champion, he's still quick. It's the truth, so I don't think we have seen slow drivers last year becoming quick and the quick guys slow, I think it's still racing. To read more Motorsport.com articles visit our website.
