Astronaut senior Adarian Dotson stepped foot on campus with sports not on his radar. His passions were fishing and video games.That changed early in his freshman year when a War Eagles football coach saw him wandering the halls with measurables at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds.I didnt play football when I was in middle school, so coming into high school I got thrown right onto varsity, Dotson said. My coach seeing me I was big so he had to just get me.Dotson underwent a learning curve to understand the intricacies of being an offensive line. He said the biggest hurdle was learning stances and cadences.It was a lot because I didnt know anything about football, Dotson said. Ive watched it a little bit but didnt know much, but I really caught onto it starting from the higher up players. Ive accomplished a lot. Ive gained a lot of offers in these couple years, so its been great.Dotson said facing the 2024 state champions Cocoa as a sophomore was his eye-opening moment.They were very good, Dotson said. They had a lot of good players and I was kind of holding my own against them. I was saying I could fit with these guys because they had offers and they were really good.In todays ever-changing transfer landscape, Dotson stayed at Astronaut for all four years and grew into a Division I recruit.It means a lot. I just wanted to stick with my brothers that I started with. Thats the biggest thing is just having my connections, Dotson said. My head coach, I came in here. We were his first class so just to be on his journey with him too has been great.Given his lack of football experience, Dotson said he never envisioned playing college football. After three productive seasons, Dotson committed to FIU.Love staying close to home. It felt like home when I went on my visit, Dotson said. For what I want to do in my future, its very helpful being down there just with all the fishing charters and all that so it was a great choice for me.Dotson said he would describe himself as aggressive and fast. Hes primarily played on the outside, but the senior has also played some on the interior.We are a very run-heavy team, so just being able to have my skills focused on that I think is very important, Dotson said. Ive been working on my pass protection, trying to get ready for college because I know its not all run at the next level.As the leader on the offensive line, Dotson said hes determined to help Astronaut return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2020.We havent made the playoffs in a couple years, so I really want to make the playoffs and get that Hudson Trophy back, Dotson said. AUBURN Alex Golesh has already spent an offseason crafting the Auburn football program in his vision, and the latest alteration to take center stage has to do with officiating.One season removed from what felt like a theme of whistles not going in its favor, Auburn has had live officials at each of its two practices so far this preseason, and Golesh explained Thursday, Aug. 6, that they'll be around for the entirety of preseason camp."We're just trying to make the time that we have on the field, which we're trying to get on and off as fast as we can, as close to game-like as we possibly can, for really everybody," Golesh said.It's not an uncommon method, certainly for scrimmage circumstances, to involve actual officials with a practice. But to this point, officials have been involved in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7, which is something Golesh has utilized since his time at South Florida."You're trying to make it as real as you possibly can for everybody," Golesh said. "Offensively, how they officiate it. How fast they allow you to line up and snap it. Even something as simple as guys being on the ball, off the ball. Defensively, guys offsides. It's big time to get defensive holdings, defensive PIs. It's instant results of plays."Auburn wide receiver Keshaun Singleton said Thursday that learning how to signal for being on- and off-ball to an official has been one of the biggest perks of having the wrinkle added to practice, saying, "(it) helps our tempo to where, in game, we're already used to the line judge moving."While the officials stick around to make as much of practice feel like a game environment as possible, Golesh was insistent that it's something that's meant to provide a game feel for all involved."Same thing for coaches," Golesh said. "Like, 'Man, that's not a hold.' No, the SEC official just said it's a hold. Let's coach it the right way. After winning an SSAA state title in 2024, Space Coast Jr./Sr. High fell to eventual Atlantic state champion American Heritage (Delray Beach) in the 2025 semifinals.Behind a large senior class, the Vipers look to reclaim a state title this fall.Were right around 18-20 seniors, so a lot of these guys have been in the program the last couple years. Offensively and defensively, although weve changed it up a little bit, added a couple things to both sides of the ball, Space Coast head coach Jake Owens said. For the most part, these guys understand what were trying to do offensively and defensively. Were just kind of tweaking everything and trying to iron out some things because we still have some young guys that need that experience.Space Coast finished last season 11-2 with its only defeats coming to Astronaut in the regular season and American Heritage. Owens said the lesson from last season was that the team can always get better.We obviously let a couple games get away from us. Our motto this year is to finish the mission and our mission is to win a state championship again, Owens said. Thats been the focus and thats really the team goal. Our focus this offseason is fixing those little things that cost us those couple games.The Vipers return an explosive offense that averaged 33.2 points per game.Junior quarterback Zion Sandy returns for his third year as the starter. Sandy accounted for nearly 3,000 total yards. He threw for 2,335 yards, 32 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. On the ground, Sandy rushed for 543 yards and 4 touchdowns.We left a lot of plays out there still. Even as good as we were offensively and all the big numbers that we put up throwing and rushing the football, I think we were just about as even as you could be, Owens said. Zion (Sandy) looks better than ever. Got an extra spin on the ball. Hes a junior now and hes just a generational type of kid. Hes getting bigger, hes getting stronger, hes faster. He had incredible numbers at the end of the summer when it came to the weight room. Hes just got a good command of the offense now.After their two leading rushers graduated, the Vipers turn to freshman running back Charlie Williams. As an 8th grader, Williams recorded 519 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns.Its (Williamss) show now. Were excited to see what hes going to do. He has the potential to break every rushing record here at Space Coast. Behind a senior-heavy offensive, our expectations are very high, Owens said. Ive been coaching 20-plus years and for his age, hes one of the best Ive coached. Last year, he was very patient. He understood his time was going to be this year. Now its his time to carry this football team in the running game.Space Coast allowed 13 points per game on defense last season. The Vipers graduated four of their top five tacklers, but they do return senior EJ Clouser who totaled 76 tackles and 18 tackles for loss. Junior Avanti Davis recorded 4 interceptions and sophomore Chad Johnson broke up 3 passes to go with one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.Im very excited about the defense. This group has done so many incredible things on the field and they dont get enough credit for it. We have a lot of young guys that are going to carry this defense and a senior defensive line, Owens said. You have EJ Clouser and Charlie Williams returning at linebacker. We have guys like Chad Johnson and Avanti Davis who all started last year. I think its just going to be one of those years where the defense goes out, does their job week in and week out and helps the offense score points.Vipers senior Kadyn Thomas produced on both sides of the ball last season. As the leading receiver last year, Thomas caught 51 passes for 737 yards and 9 touchdowns. Thomas intercepted 5 passes and recovered 2 fumbles. Hes committed to Division II Chowan University.Im just so proud of (Thomas). The kid has worked so hard to get to where he is. Hes been one of those guys that have been integral part of what weve done here. I would put him up against anybody in the county, Owens said. Hes one of the top three players in the county. Hes one of those tone setters for us on the back end. Hes going to be playing some safety for us too. Hes a ballhawk, so we want to give him as many opportunities as we can to get turnovers and create things happen.Space Coast opens the season Aug. 13 with road test at Satellite. The Vipers seek their third-straight SSAA postseason berth.Were trying to go 1-0. Thats what the goal is. Were trying to make sure every week we get better, Owens said. Im trying to make sure that every week we continue to grow offensively and defensively and get better. Our goals are the same as they have been. Its a state championship. MANSFIELD - Golf season is underway!We're taking a look at the top boys teeing off this season in the area and what sets them apart from the rest.Let's see who made the list along with a slew of honorable mentions poised to play key roles on their teams this fall and could be set for season-altering breakthroughs.Jackson Durchik, Lexington, Sr.A now three-time Richland County Junior Golf Championship winner, nobody comes into the season with more momentum and a higher ceiling than Durchik. The reigning Ohio Cardinal Conference Golfer of the Year carried that into sectionals where he was runner-up with a 74 at Sycamore Springs and ended his season the following week at districts tied for 15th with an 80 at Shawnee Country Club. Division I is the toughest to advance from with just one individual state qualifying spot from the Northwest District, but if anywhere around here is capable of going low enough to do it, it's Durchik.Cole and Carter Bowman, Crestview, Sr.Twins who play more like 1A and 1B, the Bowmans give the Cougars one of the best top end duos in the area. Cole is coming off Firelands Conference Golfer of the year honors helping guide Crestview to its third league title in four years while Carter was the team's lone representative at districts shooting an 81 to tie for 22nd at Stone Ridge Golf Club following co-medalist honors the week before at sectionals. Look for these two to duke it out for top honors each round and see how far they can lead the Cougars.Clay Rogers, Wynford, Jr.One of the co-medalists alongside the aforementioned Bowman above, Rogers has been a cornerstone for the Royals golf program since entering high school. He fired a 74 at Valley View last year in sectionals and was runner-up for Northern 10 Golfer of the Year helping the program win back-to-back league titles. And at districts, his 80 at Stone Ridge was the lowest among returners matching Durchik. Rogers has some stiff competition in the N10 this fall and will see a lot of these names in the postseason as well.Josh Maglott and Lincoln Shepherd, Madison, Sr.This duo gives the Rams a ton of experience on the links this fall which will be an invaluable asset in what is expected to be a heated OCC race. Maglott was first team All-OCC capping off the regular season with a 79 at Shelby Crossing in the third league shootout and helped the team qualify for districts where Shepherd carded an 81 for the lowest score among returners after being the drop score at sectionals and the final OCC Shootout. This is a Rams team loaded with talent and having guys like Maglott and Shepherd to lead the way makes them very dangerous.Thomas Lenahan, Shelby, Jr.The area's lone district qualifier returning in Division II, Lenahan fired an 82 at Maumee Bay State Park last fall to finish in a tie for 12th just three stokes off the final state-qualifying berth. He was honorable mention All-Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference as a sophomore and has already helped the Whippets win a tournament this season. The MOAC is shaping up to be a three-horse race with Shelby the early favorite.Bryant Berry, Colonel Crawford, Jr.First team All-Northern 10 as a freshman and sophomore, Berry has been the driving force for the Eagles' dramatic turnaround as a program. They won their first sectional title in 25 years last fall and his 83 at Stone Ridge saw him finish in a tie for 30th. Colonel Crawford has started off the year strong, too, winning the Buckeye Central Invite followed by second at the Bucyrus Elks Invitational, and most recently took control of the N10 winning the first tournament of the season thanks to Berry's 71.Jacob Snay (So.) and Ty Ellis (Jr.), AshlandThe Arrows lost their three top finishers at sectionals which would typically devastate a program. Luckily, Snay and Ellis are back to slot right into the vacant positions at the top. Snay was second team all-league last year and most recently fired a 70 at the first OCC Shootout of the season while Ellis was honorable mention as a sophomore and has been a consistent scorer for Ashland already.Vinny Studer, Madison, Fr.You've got to be pretty special to make the list as a freshman Studer is just that. After winning the RCJGC 13-14 division last summer, he defended his title in impressive fashion winning by 17 strokes. He is in the mix for the Rams' No. 1 spot already and even if he doesn't tee off there, he's part of a Madison lineup that has potential to go all the way this fall.Parker Tinch (Sr.) and Cullen Hart (Jr.), GalionTinch was first team All-MOAC last fall and Hart was second team as the Tigers return a strong core looking to bring the program back to glory.
