Michigan football's lone representative on 'Freaks List' is a shocker
The Athletic's Bruce Feldman came out with his annual "Freaks List" in which he speaks to coaches around the country and compiles a list of the 101 top athletes across Division I college football and it's fair to say Michigan football's representative was a surprise. In recent history, U-M has either had multiple representatives or players near the very top, often (but not always) big names who were expected to contribute. Last season, tight end Marlin Klein (No. 35) and defensive tackle Manuel Biegel (No. 62) made the cut. The year prior, it was defensive tackle Kenneth Grant (No. 3) and quarterback Alex Orji (No. 13) who highlighted four Wolverines on the list. Before that it was defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (No. 6) in 2023 and defensive tackle Mazi Smith (No. 1) in 2022 who were at or near the very top of the list. This time around, Michigan's representation wasn't in the form of a bruising defensive lineman or a gifted quarterback, but rather perhaps the least thought-about position on the entire roster: long snapper Gavin Magorien at No. 78."Magorien spent 2025 as Marshall's long snapper before transferring to Ann Arbor, but he also played wide receiver and DB in high school in Erie, Pa," Feldman wrote. "The 6-0, 202-pound sophomore broad jumped 10-10, did 26 reps on the bench press at 225 and squatted 550 pounds, making a case to be one of the strongest players pound-for-pound in college football. His 6.87 3-cone time is exceptional."Magorien played in all three phases at McDowell High School, which included on offense, where he ran 13 times for 77 yards and one touchdown and caught 43 passes for 488 yards and three touchdowns as a senior in 2024. He also recorded 47 tackles that season and finished with 79 in his final two years of high school ball."He's an athletic kid," special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs said unprompted of Magorien when he met with media during U-M's first week of fall camp. "He's going to be dynamic and help us."While this is quite the honor for Magorien, it appears to be further evidence of what Whittingham was talking about this offseason: The strength and conditioning of the team simply wasn't up to par with where it needs to be.Tony Garciais theMichigan beat writer for the Detroit Free Press. Pros/cons of a Vita Vea trade
TAMPA, FLORIDA - JANUARY 3: Vita Vea #50 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrates during the first quarter against the Carolina Panthers at Raymond James Stadium on January 3, 2026 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Las Vegas Raiders have been connected to a potential trade for Tampa Bay Buccaneers star defensive star Vita Vea. He reportedly wants to be traded in a contract dispute and he reportedly would be interested in being dealt to the Raiders. Here are some pros and cons of the Raiders trading for him:PROSHe would make the better:He is still an high-level player at his position. Hed be a top five Raider. The more better players you can stack on your roster, the better. Putting Vea and Maxx Crosby on the same defensive line would be a major difference maker. He wants to be there:Vita reportedly wants to be dealt to one of the California teams or the Raiders since he is from Northern California. Anytime a player of Veas caliber has interest in your team, it is worth exploring to see if it makes sense Its good advertising for the rest of the league. Hes a familiar fit:Vea was in Tampa Bay with now Las Vegas general manager John Spytek and Raiders part owner Tom Brady where they all won a Super Bowl together. In addition to knowing Vea, he is also a on-field fit for the Raiders. Hes be a great addition to the defensive line.CONSHis age:Vea is 31. That is getting up there for an interior defensive lineman. With his size and age, injuries can start piling up. So, there may be a time limit on his overall effectiveness. His cost:Reportedly, a major reason why Vea wants to leave the Buccaneers, the only team has has played for in his nine-season career, is he wants a contract extension. So, the Raiders may have to give him a new deal that averages around $20 million a season. The have the means, but would investing so much in an aging player prudent? Plus, the Buccaneers will likely want, at eaest, a Day 2 pick for Vea. That may be a lot for a rebuilding team to give.May not fit direction of rebuild:The age and draft pick and contract cost all play into this factor. Trading for Vea may make sense for a team that has instant playoff hopes instead of a team in a rebuild. Trading for Vea may be a luxury the Raiders cant afford. Conclusion:It is definitely worth exploring a trade for Vea for Las Vegas. But there are also enough potential hurdles that that has to be considered as well. Broncos 53-man roster prediction going into preseason
The Denver Broncos are now just four days away from their preseason opener, and battles for the final spots on the roster are heating up. Ahead of the team's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, we're publishing an updated 53-man roster prediction for the Broncos. This projection predicts quarterback Jarrett Stidham being traded away, leaving Sam Ehlinger as the team's backup quarterback behind Bo Nix. Some of the toughest cuts we made were running back Jaleel McLaughlin, tight end Dallen Bentley, offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Drew Sanders, cornerback Brent Austin and safety JL Skinner. It wouldn't be shocking to see any of those players make the active roster if they stand out in preseason. For now, though, here's our projection before the games begin. The CFP rankings show on ESPN should continue, so long as people watch
Credit: ESPNOn December 1, there will be a College Football Playoff rankings reveal show on ESPN.Calls to abolish single editions of it or the entire series have been coming from inside ESPNs own house for a few years now. Sometimes the complaints are about who is ranked where. Sometimes its about how the committee arrives at or explains its decisions. The conversation was pushed to a new level last December after Notre Dame was leapfrogged in the final poll by a Miami team they were ranked ahead of less than a week earlier. Notre Dames defenders cried that it shouldve been impossible for the Canes to jump the Fighting Irish when both were idle during conference championship Saturday.ESPN was unmoved. Their message to Notre Dame and to the talking heads, even the ones on their own payroll, calling for a change is clear: Your complaints are not our crisis. The rankings reveal is just another TV show on the ESPN schedule. When you judge it in that way, its easy to see why everything stays as-is.According to The Athletic, about 1.7 million people watched the CFP rankings reveal each Tuesday night. Thats more people than are tuning in on average for mid-week MAC games or early-season NHL, NBA, and college basketball games.People are only coming to live television for popular sports and breaking news. ESPN has managed to thread that needle with a studio show. Its breaking news about a very popular sport that happens at a regularly scheduled time each week. That makes the CFP rankings reveal a valuable property, even if it only lasts six episodes. The CFP rankings reveal show is also a conversation driver. ESPN shows have been making content out of what happened on other ESPN shows for years now. A controversy about perceived disrespect or the fallout from a shocking loss will be turned into multiple segments for First Take, Get Up, Paul Finebaum, SportsCenter and so many other shows.College sports, like so much of America, is in a K-shaped economy. The divide between the haves and have-nots is giant. A brand like Notre Dame is used to having its grievances placated. At the very least, they are acknowledged and addressed by the biggest stakeholders in college sports. That didnt happen this time.Of course, ESPN and the College Football Playoff heard what fans were saying. How could they not have? Im sure executives and hosts were confronted with them every time they logged into social media. But they didnt act immediately. They evaluated what they were hearing. There may have been a lot of I dont like how you did that, but there wasnt a lot they could use as a guide map to overhauling a TV show that ESPN has already paid for and made into a success. At the end of the day, thats what would be required in order to take action.Do we need a rankings reveal show? No, but the ratings clearly show that sports fans have made it appointment viewing. They may not always like what they see and hear, but the urgency keeps them coming back.It doesnt sound like ESPN and the CFP have a problem. Until they do, it will be business as usual when it comes to revealing the weekly rankings. The post The CFP rankings show on ESPN should continue, so long as people watch appeared first on Awful Announcing.
