After retiring from the NFL on eve of the 2026 season, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has shed some light on his decision.Bridgewater, 33, officially announced his retirement in an Instagram post that explained his left knee which he severely injured during a 2016 practice with the Minnesota Vikings simply wasn't recovering the way it needed to for him to continue playing."It's so crazy 10 years ago around this time, I suffered one of the most gruesome knee injuries the game itself, its players and some doctors had ever seen," Bridgewater wrote. "Everything football related since 2016 had been fueled by the 'experts' predicting that I would never play football again. We really showed them by playing 10 more seasons!""However, this wheel of mine can no longer deal with something so simple as standing around on the turf field," he continued. "This thing just doesnt recover the same way it did years ago so [I'd] rather officially hang it up. Its finally run its course and when the body speaks to me, I have to listen so that I can be in one piece and available for my children as they grow up."Bridgewater who also briefly retired after the 2023 season and spent a season coaching high school football in Florida before rejoining the Detroit Lions for their 2024 playoff run also made it clear he would not consider returning to the NFL in the future."This time it's official," Bridgewater wrote.2026 NFL RECORD PROJECTIONS: Win totals for all 32 teams, playoff predictionsThe Vikings selected Bridgewater in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft after he enjoyed a standout career at Louisville. Bridgewater quickly became a starter for the Vikings and led them to an 11-5 record and playoff berth in 2015, with many believing he would be poised to take another leap entering his age-24 season.However, Bridgewater suffered a dislocated knee and several ligament tears, including a torn ACL, during a practice with the Vikings and missed the entire 2016 season because of it. He returned to the field in 2017 but never started another game in Minnesota.From there, Bridgewater spent time with seven different organizations and logged action with six. He notably posted a 5-0 record in place of an injured Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints in 2019, a stint that he parlayed into a starting job with the Carolina Panthers.Bridgewater made 15 starts for the Panthers before being traded to the Broncos ahead of the 2021 season. He started 14 games in Denver before spending his final four seasons as a backup quarterback with the Miami Dolphins, Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Bridgewater posted a 33-32 career record across 65 starts while completing 66.3% of his passes for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns and 74 interceptions. He earned only one career Pro Bowl nod, which came in 2015, but his 90.3 passer rating ranks 31st all-time among qualified quarterbacks.Bridgewater did not provide a concrete update about what would be next for him. He simply stated he is looking forward to spending time with "this sweet little angel of ours thats coming in a couple of weeks." The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition is heating up now that training camp is here, and no one is backing down on social media from defending who they think should win the job. Through it all, the coaching staff has remained steadfast in their execution of this quarterback competition, while some on the outside consider it already Kyler Murray's job to lose.Despite those predetermined thoughts by some, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell doesn't seem worried about making a decision anytime soon, it seems. Speaking ahead of their night practice on Sunday, O'Connell gave his first true comments on the quarterback battle. He said, "Nothing has really changed from a standpoint of the timeline and things like that. So we'll see how the reps continue to go and when we feel like we're at that place, we're going to make sure we communicate that both in house and internally and obviously to you guys as soon as possible."He also added that he is surprised by where Murray is mentally in terms of handling his offensive system at this point in camp. "I think mentally he's definitely probably ahead of where I thought."The first preseason game should open this battle wide open and put someone in the driver's seat. WATERTOWN Standouts Jackson McClemans and Markus Pitkin of Watertown Post 17 and Jehiel Aviles of the Aberdeen Smittys have each again earned all-state baseball honors.McClemans, a pitcher, and Pitkin, a center fielder, are among the 29 players who haved been named to the 2026 South Dakota Class A All-State American Legion Baseball team released on Monday, Aug. 10. The team is picked by the state's Class A coaches.McClemans is one of 15 players named to the all-state first team. Pitkin is one of 14 players selected to the second team.2026 POST 17 SEASON RECAP: Post 17 had top-3 finishes in both Class A high school & Legion seasonsMcClemans also earned first-team honors and Pitkin second-team honors on the South Dakota High School Baseball Association's Class A all-state team this spring.The second team also includes outfielder Jehiel Aviles of the Aberdeen Smittys, who received honorable mention on the 2025 South Dakota Class A All-State American Legion Baseball team.McClemans, Pitkin sparked solid season for Post 17McClemans and Pitkin helped lead Watertown Post 17 to a combined 38-25 record over the high school and American Legion Baseball seasons.After finishing second in the the state Class A high school tournament in May, Post 17 tied for third recently in the state Class A American Legion tournament at Rapid City.Over the spring and summer, McClemans went 11-5 on the mound with 80 strikeouts in 97 innings and a 1.22 earned-run average. He broke the program's season ERA record of 1.26 that was set in 1996 by Spencer Waite.Pitkin spearheaded Watertown's offense, batting .358 with 30 extra-base hits, 48 runs scored and 60 RBIs. McClemans is heading to play baseball and basketball at Mount Marty University in Yankton. Pitkin plans to play college baseball at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA.Aviles also shined for the SmittysAviles, also a center field, led the way for an Aberdeen squad that went 12-24 and did not qualify for the state tournament.Aviles batted .387 with a .511 on-base percentage. He also stole 23 bases and scored 39 runs.Rapid City Post 22, Sioux Falls West top squadState champion Rapid City Post 22 and runner-up Sioux Falls West each had five players named to the squad.Brothers Wyatt and Jaxson Reeder and Aiden Roberts each made the first team for Post 22. NFL teams always need more offensive line depth, and that's been evident for the Miami Dolphins early in camp, as their backup tackles have struggled in their opportunities to protect their quarterbacks.With that, the Dolphins saw an opportunity and pounced on Monday, trading a 2028 sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots for offensive lineman Caedan Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round pick.Wallace, 26, played at Penn State from 2019-23 before the Patriots took him in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. Summit didn't have to look far for its new baseball coach.Just four days after former coach Greg Manuel confirmed his resignation, the Spartans announced that athletic director Chad Kirby will return to lead the baseball program. He previously coached Summit baseball for over a decade.Kirby has worked as Summit athletic director since the school opened in 2011 and was the school's first-ever baseball coach, leading the team from its debut season until stepping down in 2023.More: Top TSSAA volleyball players in Columbia area entering 2026 seasonWhile at the helm of Summit baseball, Kirby won over 230 games, claiming four district titles, three region titles and making two TSSAA state tournament appearances. CINCINNATI (AP) Heading into the 2021 season, the Cincinnati Bengals front office made a point to add veteran players on defense who had playoff experience and shined in big games on good teams. That strategy was rewarded as the veterans meshed with the young returning core on the Bengals defense and the team made it to the Super Bowl.Heading into this season, the Bengals are trying to replicate that same strategy.Adding high-level talent who have done it before, youve seen it on the tape and seen it in their careers, coach Zac Taylor said. You add to that the humans they are and the leaders they are. Not only did we add a lot of really talented players, theyre really good in the locker room and arent afraid to lead and help everyone else get to the next level.The Bengals signed defensive end Boye Mafe, who helped lead Seattle to a Super Bowl title last season, and two-time Super Bowl champion safety Bryan Cook, to bring a winning pedigree to an emerging defense with young players like Myles Murphy, Cashius Howell, Dax Hill, DJ Turner and Jordan Battle. The Bengals also traded for veteran defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and signed veteran defensive tackle Jonathan Allen.Mafe has made an impact immediately on the field in training camp, and he has shared valuable advice with young pass rushers like Murphy, Howell and Shemar Stewart. Mafe struggled as a rookie when he debuted for the Seahawks in 2022. The following season, he had a breakout year.He can share specific examples of what it takes to make a major leap as a pass rusher with teammates who are looking to follow that path.The coaches that I had and the people Ive been surrounded by, Ive been blessed, Mafe said. They taught me the intricacies of the game. Learning that makes the game a lot simpler for players. Half the game is mental. When you know whats going on around you, it makes it easier to play the game.In the four years that Cook played with the Kansas City Chiefs, he was an integral part of an energetic and complicated defense that frustrated some of the best teams in the NFL. That list includes the 2022 Bengals, and Cook made the game-changing play to beat Cincinnati in the 2022 AFC championship game.Taylor is already impressed with the leadership that hes seeing from Cook.I see really good communication on that side of the ball, Taylor said. I see a high level of confidence because hes hes firm believer in the work that hes put in and the position hes put himself in.Cook, a Cincinnati native who played college football at the University of Cincinnati, is motivated to win big in his hometown.Its a gift from the Lord, Cook said.
