NFL record projections 2026: AI makes win-loss picks for all 32 teams
The 2026 NFL season is rapidly approaching, and prognosticators everywhere are beginning to release their predictions for how the campaign will unfold. The exercise isn't an easy one given the league's general unpredictability. The 2025 season reminded fans of that, as few would have projected the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots to be the final teams standing in Super Bowl 60.With that in mind, USA TODAY Sports decided to give Microsoft Copilot an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot a crack at predicting the results of the 2026 NFL season.2026 NFL RECORD PROJECTIONS: Win totals for all 32 teams, playoff predictionsCopilot was prompted to assess the upcoming NFL season with two simple queries. They were as follows. Can you predict the records of all 32 NFL teams for the 2026 season? Can you briefly explain your record projections for each team?Copilot was able to understand the prompts but did fall into the trap of using outdated information in its initial batch of projections. It was then prompted to correct the errors being reminded that Tua Tagovailoa is no longer on the Miami Dolphins and Mike Tomlin stepped down from his role as Pittsburgh Steelers coach, among other minor gaffes and reassess. The experiment wasn't quite perfect, as the overly optimistic chatbot awarded the NFL's 32 teams a combined record of 297-247. That means Copilot projected 25 more wins than are actually available in a given NFL season.Despite the statistical anomalies, the experiment did shine a light on which teams Copilot believes will be the top contenders in 2026. Below is a full look at the chatbot's record projections for the upcoming season.2026 NFL record predictions: AI projections for all 32 teamsAFC EastBuffalo Bills: 13-4New England Patriots: 10-7New York Jets: 8-9Miami Dolphins: 6-11The Patriots made it to Super Bowl 60, but Copilot expects the Bills to work their way back to the top of the AFC East in 2026. The chatbot expressed confidence in Josh Allen, whom it referred to as "one of the NFL's most valuable players" but also opined Drake Maye and the Patriots defense would continue to improve.Elsewhere, Copilot believes the Jets have "too many offensive questions" to project as anything more than middle-of-the-pack. It also believes the Dolphins will be in a rebuilding year after "substantial roster turnover" and changes at quarterback (Malik Willis) and head coach (Jeff Hafley).AFC NorthBaltimore Ravens: 12-5Cincinnati Bengals: 11-6Pittsburgh Steelers: 10-7Cleveland Browns: 4-13Interestingly, Copilot opined it wanted to trust the Ravens because of Lamar Jackson and "organizational stability." Baltimore fired head coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons, so perhaps the chatbot's comments were regarding the team's front office or the fact that new coach Jesse Minter previously served as the Ravens' defensive coordinator. The chatbot also expects Joe Burrow to keep the Bengals in contention and Mike McCarthy to continue Mike Tomlin's streak of non-losing seasons with the Steelers. Copilot's faith in Pittsburgh stems largely from McCarthy "inheriting a talented defense" that should keep the team competitive.Copilot wasn't nearly as bullish on the Browns. It predicted "a difficult season unless the quarterback situation becomes a pleasant surprise."AFC SouthHouston Texans: 12-5Jacksonville Jaguars: 9-8Indianapolis Colts: 7-10Tennessee Titans: 6-11C.J. Stroud had a rough showing in the postseason, but Copilot expressed faith in the 24-year-old quarterback and Texans coach DeMeco Ryans to get the most out of their talented roster. It also has the Jaguars, who won the AFC South in 2025, as being "talented enough to stay in the wild card mix."Among the teams at the bottom of the AFC South, Copilot actually sounded slightly more optimistic about the direction of the Titans. It credited Tennessee with having an "improving roster" while referring to Indianapolis as a team that was "difficult to trust week to week."AFC WestDenver Broncos: 13-4Los Angeles Chargers: 11-6Kansas City Chiefs: 9-8Las Vegas Raiders: 5-12Copilot believes the Broncos should be the AFC West favorite after earning the AFC's No. 1 seed in 2025 following a 14-win season. It believes Sean Payton "has clearly built a contender" and also expects that the Chargers who "provide one of the league's highest floors" will be in the postseason mix.The Chiefs were "the hardest team to forecast," in the chatbot's opinion. It was scared slightly by Kansas City's 6-11 campaign in 2025 but expressed confidence that Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes can get the team turned back in the right direction quickly.Copilot also has the Raiders making "a modest improvement" but cautioned that "expecting immediate contention is unrealistic."NFC EastPhiladelphia Eagles: 12-5Washington Commanders: 11-6Dallas Cowboys: 9-8New York Giants: 6-11Copilot named the Eagles as its favorite to challenge the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks atop the NFC power structure. It praised Philadelphia's "premier roster" as giving it a great chance to contend for the team's third Super Bowl title. The chatbot also believes the Commanders are poised for a bounce-back season. It expressed confidence in Jayden Daniels being a "franchise quarterback" and helping guide Washington to a winning record and a playoff berth.Meanwhile, Copilot noted the Cowboys are "talented but difficult to trust as a true contender" while calling the Giants "improving" but noted its belief New York is still fourth in the divisional power structure.NFC NorthDetroit Lions: 13-4Green Bay Packers: 12-5Chicago Bears: 9-8Minnesota Vikings: 7-10Copilot expects the Lions, like the Commanders, to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign. The chatbot opined that the Lions have a "loaded" roster while also expressing confidence in the culture Dan Campbell has instilled in Detroit. The chatbot also expressed a lot of faith in the Packers. It said they are "much closer to Detroit than many people think" while lauding the team's recent performance under Matt LaFleur.Copilot was a bit more lukewarm on the Bears and Vikings. It called Chicago "a playoff sleeper" despite the Bears making the postseason in Ben Johnson's first season while expressing there was "too much quarterback uncertainty" surrounding Minnesota to project a winning record.NFC SouthAtlanta Falcons: 11-6Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 10-7Carolina Panthers: 8-9New Orleans Saints: 4-13Copilot seems to be a fan of Tua Tagovailoa. Much of its confidence in Atlanta stemmed from the team's "improved quarterback situation," though it also noted the Falcons have a "strong roster" around their new quarterback. The chatbot also believes the Buccaneers and Panthers will be in the mix for the division title. It called Tampa Bay "consistently solid" while lauding Bryce Young's progress as allowing Carolina to stay in the mix.Copilot was less optimistic about the Saints, who it believes are facing "a long-term rebuild."NFC WestSeattle Seahawks: 13-4Los Angeles Rams: 11-6San Francisco 49ers: 10-7Arizona Cardinals: 5-12While many are projecting the Rams to overtake the Seahawks this season, Copilot is backing the reigning champions. The chatbot credited Mike Macdonald with "building one of football's best defenses" but also praised Sean McVay for being one of the NFL's best coaches.Copilot also believes the 49ers are "dangerous" while it views the Cardinals as "several steps away from contention" after moving on from Kyler Murray during the offseason. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: NFL record projections 2026: AI makes win-loss picks for all 32 teams

Josh Tolentino: Ravens look physical. Can they play clean?
BALTIMORE Toward the end of the Baltimore Ravens' practice Sunday, I reached for my phone to type another note and discovered it had overheated. The heat index had climbed into the 90s, and the device had spent more than two hours baking under the late-morning sun. My scorching work phone tapped out before the Ravens did.Players pushed through more than 100 snaps in pads during the longest and most intense practice of training camp. Sundays session was scheduled to last 2 1/2 hours but wrapped after 2 hours, 7 minutes. The first-team offense and defense operated primarily at thud pace, making contact without tackling to the ground, while the reserves did full tackling. Two weeks into camp, the Ravens are beginning to resemble the team first-year coach Jesse Minter hoped to build when he was hired this offseason. They practice hard. They fly around. They look physical. Can they play clean?Their execution has yet to match their intensity.Fortunately, its still August.I counted more than a dozen penalties, including eight false starts by the offense.Minter wanted Sundays practice to carry a game-like intensity, with each of the three units running roughly 34 plays. Players retreated to the sideline between series, discussed what happened and returned for another stretch of work. The setup was meant to test endurance while allowing Minter to gauge whether players could absorb corrections, communicate and execute as the heat and fatigue made everything more difficult. That energy was most evident along the defensive line Sunday. With veterans Calais Campbell and John Jenkins back in the rotation, the Ravens run defense looked sturdier during full-team periods.Physicality begins in the trenches, where the Ravens must prove they can hold their ground. Last season, the Ravens lacked the necessary beef up front.Good physical work, and I feel like we will be a little more ready to play now going into this week, Minter said. The Ravens were off Monday before practicing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They will host the Philadelphia Eagles in their preseason opener Saturday, marking the first game week of Minters tenure.Baltimore appears capable of becoming the physical team Minter demands, though Sunday also showed the limitations of playing hard without playing smart.Under former coach John Harbaugh, the Ravens committed 99 penalties last season, the fifth fewest in the NFL. Their pre-snap discipline was far less impressive. Baltimores 39 pre-snap penalties ranked 20th, and the Ravens committed more penalties at home (55) than on the road (44) while suffering the worst home record in franchise history.Minter said the unscripted periods in Sundays practice offered the Ravens an opportunity to practice those key details. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has emphasized varying the quarterbacks cadence throughout the preseason. If executed properly, it can disrupt a pass rushers timing, coax the defense offside and give the offense an advantage before the snap. That is really where you have to practice that stuff as much as possible, Minter said. We have to be dialed in and execute that.Minter described the cadence as a potential real weapon. On Sunday, the Ravens repeatedly aimed it in the wrong direction. The heat and workload surely contributed.Still, better to expose the issue and adjust in mid-August than the season opener at Indianapolis. If anyone benefited from the offenses uneven outing, it was Tyler Loop. The second-year kicker converted all seven of his field-goal attempts, including three from at least 50 yards, and capped practice by drilling a 53-yarder.At last, its game week. The preseason might be easy to dismiss, especially when established starters like Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, Roquan Smith and Kyle Hamilton barely participate. Still, Saturdays exhibition at M&T Bank Stadium should offer the first look at whether Minters daily demands translate beyond the practice field. When I asked Minter how satisfied he was with the teams progress through the halfway point of camp, he pushed back on the premise.I dont know that youre ever satisfied, Minter said. Youre always trying to chase. To me, what youre chasing in training camp is the best version of yourself every day, and you want that to continue to raise and raise and raise and raise. Were really trying to chase detail, trying to chase execution, trying to chase just all the little things that can happen in a play where its not exactly how you drew it up that to me is like problem-solving within the scheme. So, we will keep chasing all that. I like where were at.The Ravens most intense day of camp gave Minter plenty to like and plenty to correct.____

The Infantino saga -- What they said
Jordan's football chief Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein accused FIFA of blackmail in their efforts to get him to endorse Infantino's bid for re-election (Ahmad ALAMEEN)FIFA president Gianni Infantino's position remains precarious, despite receiving support from his close friend US President Donald Trump, after three confederations tore into him in a joint letter. It seems nothing the 56-year-old Swiss has done from shelving his much-criticised plan to raise private investment to run the commercial side of the World Cup to apologising for the manner in which it was launched is enough to assuage his critics. In effect they have made plain the problem is him and his style of leadership. He previously looked a shoo-in to be re-elected unopposed for a fourth and final term in Rabat next March, but his opponents are circling sensing he has been fatally weakened by the constant onslaught.AFP Sport highlights the pick of the reaction since Infantino's humiliating climbdown 10 days ago:FIFA"It is increasingly evident that there is a concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine FIFA and its President."Those who do not have the support of FIFA's Member Associations should not seek to achieve through allegation, insinuation or misinformation what they cannot achieve through FIFA's established democratic processes."-- FIFA's blunt statement on Saturday following allegations in The Telegraph regarding an affair Infantino had whilst at European football's governing body UEFA. The critics"Leadership in football is not a possession. It is not about holding -- or demanding -- power to be held."When trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned."-- A no holds-barred letter, released on Monday, signed by the presidents of three confederations, Aleksander Ceferin (UEFA), Victor Montagliani (CONCACAF) and Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa (AFC)."UEFA's associations were very clear about the conditions attached to their non participation in FIFA competitions."First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again."These conditions have not been met."-- UEFA's uncompromising response to FIFA's directors show of unity, reiterating its threat to boycott the World Cups."We (Norwegian Football Federation) are going to ask the FIFA president to resign now."-- NFF president Lise Klaveness, a consistent critic of Infantino, makes no bones about what she wants."We pride ourselves in Jordan in upholding ethical values. We did not endorse him before and certainly will not now. But the whole situation amounts to blackmail and we refuse to give in to that."-- Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein, president of the Jordanian Football Association and who ran against Infantino in 2016, accuses FIFA of withholding money owed unless he supported Infantino in his re-election bid. "Certainly I don't have confidence in Mr Infantino, after this point, given what transpired."-- Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, one of the three co-hosts of the recently concluded World Cup.FIFA insiders"The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question."-- Legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, appointed in 2019 by Infantino as Chief of Global Football Development. He is among those individuals, listed in UEFA's lawyer's letter, instructed to keep all 'Relevant Materials' pertinent to the plan.Supporters"FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino."-- Trump's post on Truth Social. For many of Infantino's opponents the closeness to Trump, including the awarding of the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize, is a major problem."He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented. If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again."-- Trump on Infantino's handling of the 48-team World Cup just gone."The CAF EXCO also unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and thanked him for his support for African Football, over the years."-- The Confederation of African Football is not for turning and sticks by its friend."The FMF (Mexican Football Federation) supports president Infantino's leadership in continuing to promote the development of football through institutional strengthening."-- 2026 World Cup co-hosts Mexico swung behind him last Friday, in contrast to the federations of their fellow hosts the US and Canada, who came out in support of the open letter signed by CONCACAF on Monday.pi/nf
