The 2026 Los Angeles Angels had one of the most successful trade deadlines in years. After the last half-decade of never going all in on selling or buying at the deadline, that finally changed.On July 29, the Angels announced they were trading catcher Logan OHoppe and right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers for infielder Angel Arredondo. His slugging percentage sat at .295 with 63 strikeouts. 2026 has been disappointing so far for OHoppe, not only offensively but defensively. Hes had five errors and has allowed 50 stolen bases while only catching 14.While OHoppe has been a fan favorite among Halo fans, the trade made sense. The 26-year-old just hasnt been doing it for the Angels behind the plate. And with the addition of Tyler Heineman earlier this season and Travis DArnaud returning from the injured list, there was no room left for OHoppe.Silseth 2026 Season BreakdownWhile the OHoppe aspect of the trade made sense, including right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth in the deal was a surprise.Silseth leads the team in game appearances, pitching in 47 games with 48 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched. With the way the Halos bullpen has been struggling this year, Silseth was one of the few bright spots.Beyond that, the 26-year-old has been with the Angels since 2022 and has been a great addition for the team not only as a relief pitcher but as a starter as well. Soriano started 2026 on a historical note, becoming the first MLB starter since 1900 to allow one or fewer runs through six starts.There had been rumors that the Angels were going to trade Soriano throughout the year, and after the news broke that the Blue Jays were sending Kevin Gausman to Chicago, it was no surprise when they went after Soriano.Nimmala is currently the No. 27 overall prospect. He was drafted in 2023 by the Blue Jays straight out of high school. Nimmala has solid contact and power at the plate, along with good speed on the bases. Hell certainly become one of the Angels best prospects in the organization.Micheletti has spent his 2026 campaign in Double-A, hitting .251 with 14 home runs. Rivero has pitched 113 innings as a starter in the Florida Complex League with a 3.66 ERA. Both young prospects can be future stars for the ball club.Jo Adell TradeJo Adell was sent to the Cleveland Guardians in a one-for-one trade, with the Angels receiving catcher Jacob Cozart in return.Adell had an OPS of .682 in 111 games with the Halos this season, hitting 16 home runs and 62 RBIs. The Guardians get the power-hitting outfielder theyve been searching for, while the Angels get back a promising catching prospect with elite defense.View this post on InstagramTaking into consideration how well the Guardians are at developing their prospects, it wouldnt be surprising to see Cozart bring a new level to the Angels organization. His defensive capabilities set him apart from the rest, but his offense isnt that far behind. Hes hit .240 this year with 10 home runs. That alone would be a step-up from what the Halos had been seeing from OHoppe this year.Brent Suter TradeIts become a staple in recent years that the Angels will make some kind of deal with the Atlanta Braves. This year it happens to be the Halos sending left-handed pitcher Brent Suter to Atlanta in exchange for third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr.Suter was a likely trade candidate not only due to his cheap one-year contract but also for his 4.12 ERA in 63.1 Innings pitched in 41 games.While Alvarez Jr. has already been placed on the IL in the minors, if healthy, he could be a top performer. Alvarez Jr. has spent some time in both the minors and majors. Hes primarily spent that time at third base because of his defensive capabilities. With him also seeing some time at second base and good power at the plate, Halo fans can expect to see him in the majors in the coming years.Ryan Zeferjahn TradeAnother very complete deal for both sides. Ryan Zeferjahn, after posting a 3.71 ERA in 45 games, was traded to the Chicago Cubs. Zeferjahns name appeared in several trade rumours over the season on account of his elite swing-and-miss pitches.In return, the Halos received catcher/designated hitter Moises Ballesteros and right-handed pitcher Mason McGuire. With the hole left behind by OHoppe, Ballesteros is expected to fill that spot. Ballesteros was one of the Cubs top prospects in 2025. He hit .246 with a .723 OPS in two seasons with them. Hes still developing on both defensive and offensive ends. But being surrounded by two veteran catchers, Travis DArnaud and Tyler Heineman, hell most likely sharpen those skills.22-year-old Mason McGwire also came with Ballesteros in the trade. The son of Mark McGwire was drafted out of high school in 2022 in the 11th round by the Cubs. Hes posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 18 games between single-A and high-A ball. The Angels could always use more pitching and young promising prospects.Kirby Yates TradeAmong all the trades, it seemed unlikely that Kirby Yates would be moved at the deadline, as hes had a rough 2026 campaign. After posting a 3.95 ERA and blowing three of six save opportunities, Yates was traded to the Pirates.It was a last-minute trade from the Halos to wrap up the 2026 trade deadline. But the Halos did receive back a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher, Kyle Robinson. The young pitcher was drafted in 2024 by the Athletics and then was traded to Pittsburgh at the beginning of the 2026 season. Robinson has spent more of his career as a starter, with a 4.55 ERA and 1.43 WHIP this season.While Robinson may not be the more promising prospect of the deadline, its a fair swap for a pitcher like Kirby Yates.Final ThoughtsOverall, the Angels had a surprising and successful trade deadline. With many expecting the team to be quiet again this year, these six moves are something to celebrate. Going into this deadline, interim GM John Mozeliak did state that he wanted to focus on building/helping the farm system. During his time with the Isotopes, Veen has been busy, working on both sides of his game.I feel like a little bit of everything has gotten better while I was there, Veen said. Kyle Whittingham is trying to bring stability to Michigan, a program thats been ensnared in scandal for years. While the culture change the former longtime Utah head coach is overseeing appeared convincing at Big Ten media days in Chicago last month, Whittinghams remarks about the Wolverines longstanding series with Ohio State gave a faction of the maize and blue faithful some pause.I just think that a rivalry can be intense and emotional without the hatred factor on it, Whittingham said on July 30. I don't think there's any place for that, personally.That response was amenable and arguably refreshing, considering the storied showdown has recently been characterized by personal animosity, chiefly among the teams head coaches. I dont think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did, but it did happen, and I thought it was the right call. But one of the things about [Carrington] is that shes gonna play her butt off, man. Shes gonna compete. Nobodys gonna go walking in for a layup. I dont oppose the hard foul, but I also dont think she intentionally went for the neck.Before returning home to Indiana to become the Fevers head coach in November 2024, White was head coach of the Connecticut Sun for the 2023 and 24 WNBA seasons, winning the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year award. She coached Carrington on the Sun for those two years. So, if anyone not named DiJonai Carrington has the authority to speak on her playing style, its White.But, as with all matters of the WNBA, people who otherwise dont care about womens basketball latched onto this and blew it out of proportion. Trying to create a fabrication or distortion of who I am, of what Im about. Our players success, our players health and wellness, our players safety is always a top priority for me. The Cincinnati Reds expect to learn more sometime Wednesday about the long-term prognosis of All-Star pitcher Hunter Greene after he undergoes surgery for his badly damaged elbow specifically whether the extent of the surgery could sideline him all of next season.Greene, who began experiencing soreness after his fifth start since returning from his first injured-list stretch this season, was to have the surgery in Los Angeles the morning of Aug. 12 with Dr. Neal ElAttrache performing the operation.Reds schedule Chicago White SoxForget September. The Reds are already being pushed by their August scheduleIf the damage is severe enough to require Tommy John reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament that is all but certain to mean Greenes return to the rotation would be pushed to at least early 2028. The Denver Broncos hope to build a new stadium by 2031. The project will entail many decisions.One fairly important decision, from the perspective of the folks who attend the games, has yet to be considered.PSLs. Personal Seat Licenses. The money-for-nothing charge that attaches to the ability to buy season tickets.During a Tuesday press conference with reporters, owner and CEO Greg Penner addressed the PSL issue.Really, its the furthest thing from our minds right now," Penner said. "Were so focused on weve had so many steps before that. . . . [Burnam Yards is] still a preferred site but its not finalized that were going to be in that location. Obviously, thats where we really want to be. "So really, we havent even gotten to PSLs yet. Our season ticket holders are vital to our organization and were going to keep them informed every step of the way once we get there."Plenty of teams use PSLs, which can become very expensive based on the quality of the seats. And, frankly, it's more fair to fund the construction of a new stadium through the PSL process than to impose on taxpayers generally, since most of them will never attend a game and many of them don't care about football.That may sound sacrilegious to hard-core football fans, but it's true.
