CHICAGO Michael and Cynthia Castaneda watched the deluge Tuesday morning at their Dyer, Ind., home and wondered how they were going to get ready for Pope Hat Night at White Sox Park.There was a tornado, Cynthia said. We have to move branches, clear out the sewers But she was determined to get these costumes, Michael added.The husband and wife were determined to dress like Pope Leo XIV for the Sox giveaway, and no tornado, plague of locusts or flooded viaduct was going to keep them away. They showed up Tuesday night wearing matching white cassocks, beige capelet and gold-and-white pope miter hats.Sox fans waiting in line near the championship statue for the pope hats also waited to take their pictures with the Castanedas.Michael was a dead ringer for Pope Leo, who, as everyone by now knows, was born in Chicago and became the worlds most famous White Sox fan. Sox marketing executive Michael Downey came up with the idea to give away pope hats, and a sellout crowd turned up to get one.I think the pope would appreciate it and he would see how many people love and respect him, and that were showing our love in Chicago for our Pope Leo, Cynthia said.Before they decided to come, Michael asked his wife if it would be disrespectful to the pope.And the answer is no, she said. I think he has a sense of humor and he would chuckle if he saw us, because he knows were only spreading his word.The Pope Hat Night took on a life of its own, and eclipsed the actual game between the first-place White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds, a rematch of the 1919 World Series that the Sox threw and went down in history as the Black Sox Scandal. This town likes to laugh, and can laugh at itself.I was hoping the Sox would hand Necco wafers in the press box for some pretend communion like the old days at St. Josephs in Homewood, but had to settle for the hot dogs and trail mix.It was 1:40 a.m. at the Vatican when the Sox game began, so were not sure if Pope Leo was tuning into the game on his CHSN app and chuckling at the sight of 40,615 or so fans and Sox players celebrating home runs in the dugout wearing pope hats.So we asked the nearest nun, Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, who formerly taught at Marian Catholic in Chicago Heights.Sister Mary Jo, who threw out the first pitch, said Pope Leo would enjoy the hoopla.He would say its all about bringing people out, she said. Its all about community and having people share things. You get people together and you dont know where it leads. It can lead to friendship, conversation I think hed be game.Fittingly, former White Sox pitcher Donn The Pope Pall was invited to announce play ball before Tuesdays game.Sox marketing guru Brooks Boyer said he didnt know if Pope Leo knew about the promotion, but added that people in the know say hes following everything thats going on with the White Sox. Presumably that meant he knew about manager Will Venables gaffe from Friday, and the fact that the Sox bounced back and took the series from the Cleveland Guardians.Boyer said the Sox wanted to do something super respectful for their famous fan, and they ditched an idea for Pope Leo bobbleheads. Dressing up the mascot, Southpaw, in a pope outfit was deemed very respectful.Did the Sox have to get permission from the Vatican?In the name, image and likeness world, we dont use (Pope Leos name) on the hats, Boyer said.So a generic pope hat?Generic, he said.Boyer thought it was the biggest giveaway in Sox history, though he couldnt be certain. Former owner Bill Veeck once gave out 30,000 Eskimo Pies at old Comiskey Park, with the joke being they were all given to one lucky fan.It certainly was the most successful Sox promotion since Disco Demolition Night in 1979, linking the pope with Steve Dahl appropriately enough. I was fortunate enough to sit in the visiting dugout during the so-called Disco Demolition riot until being kicked out by a Detroit Tigers coach, who confiscated my bottle of whiskey. That promotion centered around blowing up disco records, not giving away pope hats.It was a different time.Boyer said it all started as a special promotion of 2,500 pope hats, but those tickets quickly sold out. They upped it to 3,000 hats, and then decided to let everyone have one or 40,615 for a sellout, including the suites.The original ticket purchasers were also given special Pope Leo Sox jerseys.Will the Sox run the promotion back in 2027, if, God willing, there is a 27 season?Its certainly on the list, Boyer said.Someone suggested a pope-mobile bullpen cart.Could there be a point of oversaturation? Last year brought us the Mass for the pope, and a mural of the pope at the ballpark. Maybe the Sox are using their association with the pope too much. Or maybe the pope is an everlasting gift from God to the Sox marketing department?Obviously we want to be respectful of the position, Boyer said. There was a lot of chatter about a pope bobblehead and things like that. We decided not to pursue something along that line. But the fact that the pope is certainly an identified White Sox fan, were certainly proud of it it is certainly a point of pride for the Chicago White Sox and White Sox fans, and were not going to run from it.If the Sox get to the World Series, maybe the pope can come and enjoy the fun with everyone in their pope hats.Hopefully Mike Vasil can give him a magic wand.____

The Mets dropped just their second game of the road trip on Tuesday night, losing to the Atlanta Braves, 4-0.Here are the key takeaways...-- Locked in a pitchers duel with Braves starter Martin Perez, Nolan McLean appeared to have the upper hand as he didnt allow a hit through the first four innings and was getting through Atlantas lineup efficiently and with relative ease thanks to the Braves aggressiveness at the plate.-- Unfortunately, the Mets blistering offense came to a screeching halt and was unable to get past Perez, despite good career numbers up and down the lineup against the veteran, as the left-hander matched McLeans zeros.-- The game turned on a dime in the fifth inning when Met killer Ozzie Albies broke up the no-hitter, the shutout and the scoreless tie when he turned on an 0-2 fastball by McLean for a solo bomb leading off the frame.The home run was Albies 20th of the season and his 25th career home run against the Mets in 119 games the most hes hit against one team. Albies also entered the day hitting a ridiculous .366 with a .869 OPS on an 0-2 count, far better than his career .201/.206/.295 slash line.-- McLean quickly regrouped and retired the next three in order before going back out for the sixth and retiring the side. The right-handers night was done after that, following just 85 pitches (53 strikes), his only blemish being the home run, which was enough to give him the loss.-- New Yorks bullpen wasnt as sharp as McLean with Jefrey Yan walking three in the seventh and throwing a wild pitch while allowing a run to score in 0.2 innings. Chayce McDermott came in to get the final out and after uncorking a wild pitch of his own, he got Austin Riley to fly out to deep center field with Luis Robert Jr. making a nice catch at the wall.McDermott wasnt so lucky in the eighth, allowing two runs to score on Matt Olsons league-leading 35th home run of the season, which gave the Braves a 4-0 lead on just two total hits.-- The Mets werent much better, tallying just four hits on the night two from Carson Benge. Nolan McLean and Martn Prez engaged in a pitchers duel, with neither having dominant stuff tonight, but both doing what they could to keep the offense to a minimum. The Mets put runners on in each of the first four innings, but Prez was able to keep them from coming around to score. Both teams were kept off the board until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Ozzie Albies led off with a solo home run. That solo home run was the only hit given up by McLean, who had six strong innings, allowing just the one hit/one run, two walks, and struck out three. McLean was efficient with his pitches, throwing 85 over his six innings. The Mets best chance to score happened in the sixth inning, when Bo Bichette walked and Luis Robert Jr. singled to put two on with one out. However, Carson Benge grounded into a double play to end the inning without incident. Another run crossed the plate for the Braves in the seventh, with Jefry Yan on the mound. Two walks, a wild pitch, a ground out, and a sacrifice fly plated the second run of the game. After issuing his third walk of the inning, Yan was pulled from the game for Chayce McDermott. The first pitch tossed by McDermott was a wild pitch, pushing the runners to second and third. A long fly ball off the bat of Austin Riley found its way into Roberts Jrs glove at the wall to end the inning.After the Mets were blanked in the top of the eighth, McDermott was back out for his second inning of work. Chicago Bears training camp is in full swing ahead of the 2026 regular season. Under second-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears are looking to build on their success from last year and keep pace in a crowded NFC with important meetings and practices at Halas Hall.Tuesday's practice was set to be the most intense day yet for the Bears, according to Johnson. Inclement weather caused the team to close practice to the fans, but the Bears were able to still practice outdoors. Here are the players who stood out on Day 12 of practice:1. RB D'Andre SwiftD'Andre Swift appears to be in midseason form. The veteran running back is stringing together strong practices with another coming on Tuesday. According to WGN's Eli Ong, Swift took a pitch for a 38-yard touchdown while breaking multiple tackles in the process. Bear Report's Zack Pearson called Swift's runs "explosive" early on during practice and noted one of his broken tackles came against rookie safety Dillon Thieneman. It seems Swift was the offensive star of the day and hopefully this translates to a strong start to the regular season.2. LB T.J. EdwardsAt long last, linebacker T.J. Edwards is back in team drills. Edwards had a long offseason rehabbing his fractured fibula and dealing with another injury prior to training camp. He officially returned to practice last week but had only been doing individual workouts. Tuesday was his first taste of 11-on-11s and he made his presence known. CHGO's Adam Jahns observed Edwards making a big stop on running back Roschon Johnson for a tackle for loss. It's a good sign for Edwards as he works to regain his early 2025 form while competing for a starting spot alongside D'Marco Jackson.3. S Skyler ThomasSkyler Thomas was bound to stand out at some point during camp. The undrafted rookie safety out of Oregon State has been thrust into the spotlight following injuries to the Bears' secondary and came away with his first interception. The Chicago Tribune's Phillip Thompson saw Thomas get an interception off backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, which came near the end of practice. Franco Aleman came on in the bottom of the eighth and made quick work of the Tigers. He did walk a batter, but he also struck out one and retired the side in 14 pitches. The Guardians got on the board in the top of the third. Jo Adell hit a sac fly to deep enough in the right field to score Kwan from third. The Guards were still 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, but the offense had a base runner in every single inning. Like Twitter user MichaelHook_CLE phrased it, this team seems to be playing at their floor. There are some categorical improvements in the offense since the trade deadline additions, but it feels like the pieces are taking their sweet time to fall into place. (Photo by Gus Stark/LSU/University Images via Getty Images)Today was the first day of full pads, and the media was allowed to view the usual three periods, which is about 1215 minutes.During that session, I spent time hitting each position group, but the groups I spent the most time with were the edges, offensive line, QBs, and skill positions.Lets start with the DBs and linebackers. Faheem Delane was still working with the first unit at the safety position. He looked really good in the limited amount of time I was able to view him. They were primarily focusing on alignment, depth, and having good eye discipline.As for the linebackers, TJ Dottery and Whit Weeks were TJ Dottery and Whit Weeks. Nothing more needs to be said. Davion Keys was looking very crisp throughout the individual periods as well.During the portion of practice where I watched the star position, I was able to see CJ Jimcoily, and he looks like a great fit for this spot. Dashawn Spears is the guy, but its comforting knowing he has great depth behind him.For the first time, I was able to see Jordan Seaton getting some live reps, and this young man looks like an NFL left tackle. His feet are so smooth and agile for someone his size. His first strike is absolutely violent and blew the opposing defender back with a head pop. It was really special to see him in contact.While watching the QBs, they were throwing to receivers and tight ends in several different scenarios. The TEs were primarily working in the red zone, and right now, the rhythm and relationship that Sam Leavitt and TreyDez Green are developing could and should be the separator for this offense. Anywhere Leavitt placed the ball, Green was going to get it and was doing so effortlessly.Once the QBs finished with the TEs, they worked on several different route situations with the receivers. One was a sideline pump-and-go that Leavitt was able to connect on deep with Tyree Holloway. They then worked on deep out routes from the opposite half, or wide side, of the field. The first one was completed to Jackson Harris. He had to make a little bit of an adjustment to the ball but was able to remain in bounds.The other ball was a back-shoulder sideline dot to Malik Elzy, who was able to keep two feet in bounds for the completion. Leavitt is getting better and better with each practice, and thats promising to see.The final position group I wanted to share my thoughts on is the edges. Every day, Im coming away impressed with Lamar Brown. He is truly improving every single time out. His technique, approach, and, most importantly, his attitude truly shine. He is giving his alland I mean maximum efforton each rep. Hes taking the coaching and applying it right away. This kid is absolutely special.This edge room has some depth concerns, but those concerns are rooted in a lack of experience. This room is very talented. Dylan Carpenter, Kolaj Cobbins, and now Jaiden Breaker are all really talented athletes. Can they turn the corner? That remains to be seen. But when it comes to Lamar Brown, he is turning that corner, and soon he will be turning heads.Theres a walkthrough tomorrow with no media availability. All-Star Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz will wear a brace on his injured right thumb through at least early September and is in jeopardy of missing the rest of 2026 season.Manager Mark Kotsay offered an update to reporters on Tuesday and didn't sound optimistic about Kurtz's chances of playing again in 2026."Four weeks of no mobility," Kotsay said of Kurtz, per MLB.coms Martn Gallegos. "You probably can do the timeline and think through the scenarios in front of us for Nick."Kurtz landed on the injured list on Aug. 4 for a second time with the thumb injury that initially caused him to miss 10 games in July. He aggravated the injury that was diagnosed as an acute on chronic volar plate tear of the MCP joint in his right thumb.Nick Kurtz's second MLB season is likely done.AP Photo/Ellen SchmidtKurtz had a platelet-rich-plasma injection on Aug. 4 that Kotsay said Tuesday went well. But he's slated to wear a brace for four weeks following the injection, meaning he'll be restricted by the brace through at least early September. Kurtz would then need to work his wrist and his body back into baseball shape before returning to the field. Even if he ramped up before the conclusion of the season on Sept. 27, he'd be returning to a team that started Monday at 47-72, the second worst record in the American league. The Athletics aren't in the playoff hunt.There would be little motivation for the Athletics to bring Kurtz back at that point, and his season is likely done.If so, Kurtz finishes his second season as a bright spot in another down year for an Athletics team playing without a permanent home as it waits for its Las Vegas stadium to be built.Kurtz followed up his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2025 with his first All-Star selection in 2026. In 99 games, Kurtz has slashed .256/.296/.483 with 21 home runs, 69 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 79 walks. He fell off from a .290/.383/.619 slash line in his rookie season that also earned him a Silver Slugger award, but continued to show plenty of promise as an anchor for the Athletics' future.But his present with the team appears to be on hold.

After a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans there's still no clarity for the San Francisco 49ers on their left guard battle according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.Shanahan on Tuesday spoke with reporters after the 49ers wrapped up their joint practice with the Titans and indicated that nothing changed in the race for the fifth and final starting spot on San Francisco's offensive line. Entering practice it was veteran Robert Jones and second-year player Connor Colby who were the presumed frontrunners at the position with rookie Carver Willis potentially making his way into the mix. That was where Shanahan said things still stood after practice. "I think it's too early to say," Shanahan said. "There definitely is a battle there. It's open for anybody. Those guys would probably be the lead at it. Love to get Carver in that, too. Him missing a week or whatever it was with his concussion made him out of it a little bit, but he's been out two practices in a row. It's still early.
