SPORTS.YAHOO.COMShohei Ohtani reportedly unlikely to opt out of Dodgers contract if Mark Walter sells teamWell thats one fewer thing for the Los Angeles Dodgers to worry about.Amid team chairman Mark Walters shock decision to sell the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, it was quickly reported that Walter has no similar plans to offload the Dodgers. That is rather important, as doing so would open the door for Shohei Ohtani to hit the free agent market.Ohtani has a key man clause in his contract that allows him to opt out of his 10-year, $700 million deal if either Walter or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman leave the team.A day after the Lakers sale was reported, The Athletic has now relayed that Ohtani is unlikely to terminate his deal even if Walter does sell in the near future, according to a source with knowledge of the Ohtani camps thinking.Thats honestly not too surprising. Yes, Ohtani hitting the open market would create a circus like baseball has never before seen. Its not even that hes a four-time MVP and two-time World Series champion, its that he brings with him the full attention of Japan, the fourth-largest economy in the world. You dont want to know what certain teams would pay to take that from the Dodgers, or what the Dodgers would pay to stop them.Becoming a free agent again would be the way for Ohtani to maximize his income, but the thing about Ohtani is that he doesnt really seem to care about maximizing his income, at least when it comes to his MLB salary. We saw that when Ohtani first landed his $700 million deal. Yes, that is an ungodly amount of money for a baseball player (and yet, since surpassed by Juan Soto). But it wasnt created via a bidding war, as most mega-deals are. Instead, it has been reported that Ohtani simply presented his serious suitors with his price tag.The Dodgers agreed, as did the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays, while the Los Angeles Angels turned him down. Ohtani picked the Dodgers, who didnt even suggest the deferred money structure that has become something of a hot topic. As Friedman recalled about the deferred money, which has given the Dodgers even more payroll flexibility, "I wouldn't have had the guts to propose it.Had Ohtani wanted more money, or all of his money immediately, he almost certainly would have gotten it.Signing with the Dodgers has worked out for Shohei Ohtani, to put it mildly.Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesSo when its reported Ohtani wouldnt be interested in becoming a free agent again, its fairly believable. Playing for the Dodgers has obviously worked out quite well for him, with two MVP awards and two World Series rings in two years, as he continues to reach a level of celebrity in Japan that has no American equivalent. That celebrity has allowed to him to make a reported nine figures per year in endorsements, hence why he might not want to make a notable change in his career right now.The key man clause is seemingly unprecedented when it comes to MLB player contracts. As The Athletic notes, we have seen it before though with Friedman, as then-Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon exercised the same clause in his contract when Friedman left the Rays to take over the Dodgers. There is also the example of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, who linked his contract to the presence of then-manager Pep Guardiola. That clause was later removed.0 Comments 0 Shares 108 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEx-college golfer resigns from club after admitting to faking hole-in-one in wild tournament cheating scandalA former college golfer resigned from his St. Louis-area course this week after a wild cheating scandal in which he faked a hole-in-one.Zach Holland, a 2-handicap amateur golfer who played for William Carey University in college, was caught up in a cheating scandal recently and admitted to faking a hole-in-one during a membership event at WingHaven Country Club outside of St. Louis.I made a bad decision, and I have to suffer the consequences, he said. Im trying to move forward as best I can, and its been rough.Holland told ESPN Radio in St. Louis last week that he placed a golf ball in the hole on the par-3 fourth at the course before the start of a membership tournament. When he finished the third hole with his group, Holland then told his playing partners that he needed to take a phone call regarding his mortally sick grandmother. He said hed tee off first, and then join the group on the green later in order to keep up pace of play.By the time he joined his group again on the green, he said he told them that he thinned the tee shot but wasnt sure where it went. The group then found the ball in the cup, assumed he had hit a hole-in-one, and started celebrating. But eventually, staff reviewed security footage that showed Holland driving near the fourth green well before his scheduled tee time. He then admitted to faking the hole-in-one, and resigned his membership."There's no excuse for what I did, and I was completely in the wrong," Holland said. "There's really no motivation. Just complete stupidity, and we were giving two shots back to the field and that's not an excuse. There's no excuse for what happened.Holland was in the first group of the member tournament, which included a hole-in-one prize pot.WingHaven general manager Nathan Charnes, who is also serving as the acting PGA of America president, said that the matter had been promptly addressed and is now considered closed. While Holland is admitting to his mistake, he said he and his family have been the target of online abuse ever since the scandal broke."I made a terrible mistake," he said. "The lack of moral character I can take the banter and the chatter and the heat because I deserve that from a golf perspective."What I am most worried about is my family. ... It's not fair to them for me to put them in that situation where when they walk through a room, there is a stigma there that your dad is a [cheater]. So questions that they may get asked or be getting asked down the road, that's the worst part. The golf is secondary."0 Comments 0 Shares 108 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Schedule Reveals Interesting TrendsPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 6: Jaylen Brown #7 of the Philadelphia 76ers talks to the media at Francis J. Myers Recreation Center on August 6, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)Getty ImagesFinally, NBA teams will start making travel arrangements and fans can start purchasing tickets. The NBA released its 82-game regular-season schedule for the 2026-27 season on Thursday, an annual tradition that provides intrigue on marquee matchups and clarity on the teams dizzying itinerary. Below are some of the interesting parts of the NBAs schedule for the 2026-27 season.Best reunion gameFrom a pure basketball standpoint, the best reunion game will entail Philadelphia 76ers guard Jaylen Brown facing the Boston Celtics (Nov. 10, 8 pm ET, NBC) for the first time since the Celtics unexpectedly traded him. Yes, the NBA scheduled LeBron James to face the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas Day (8 pm ET, ABC) for the first time since leaving this offseason for the Philadelphia 76ers. Giannis Antetokounmpo will also play the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 18 (7 pm ET, ESPN) for the first time since the Miami Heat acquired him in an off-season trade. But Browns reunion means more. Unlike James eight seasons with the Lakers, Brown spent his entire NBA career with Boston and grew as its No. 3 pick (2015) to an eventual Finals MVP and multi-year All-Star. While Antetokounmpo made it clear that he wanted to leave Milwaukee amid frustration with its rebuild, it was the Celtics that thought of dealing Brown. When put in that context, Brown will face his former team with more complex and raw emotions. All of which makes it surprising and disappointing that Brown will play the Celtics first in Philadelphia before going to Boston (Jan. 27, 2027, 7:30 pm ET, Amazon Prime). Brown presumably will still witness a video tribute before an appreciative Celtics crowd that seems divided that the organization dealt him for an aging Paul George and draft picks. But some of the emotional charge dissipates since Brown would have already faced Boston in Philly. SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - JUNE 13: Karl-Anthony Towns #32 of the New York Knicks celebrates with the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy after the victory against the San Antonio Spurs in Game Five of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center on June 13, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Cortes/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe NBA has various national TV leadersThe league deals with complicated variables with finalizing the formula, including venues availability dates and various team itineraries. But heres one thing that isnt complicated: the NBA showcases its marquee teams on national TV games.Hence, its not surprising that the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers all have a league-leading 34 national TV games through Amazing Prime, NBC/Peacock, ESPN and ABC. The Knicks won their first NBA championship since 1973 in the countrys largest media market. The Spurs lost in the NBA Finals, but boasts a young generational star (Victor Wembanyama). The Sixers just formed a Super Team by pairing Brown and James with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The Lakers have a global following, have a generational star (Luka Doni) and are a second-tier playoff team. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 06: Luka Doncic #77 of the Los Angeles Lakers reacts after making a three-point basket in the second half against the New York Knicks at Crypto.com Arena on March 06, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Meg Oliphant/Getty Images)Getty ImagesLongest road trip?To accommodate venue availabiltiies and ensure more efficient travel itineraries, every NBA team will have at least one lengthy trip. The Minnesota Timberwolves have seven road games in 17 days that starts with a home back-to-back at Indiana (Jan. 2) and vs San Antonio (Jan. 3). The Wolves then play in Houston (Jan. 5), Toronto (Jan. 7) and Washington (Jan. 8) before returning home to host Cleveland (Jan. 11). Minnesota then travels to Chicago (Jan. 14), Philadelphia (Jan. 16) and New York (Jan. 18). The Lakers (Jan. 28 Feb. 8) and New Orleans Pelicans (Jan. 30 Feb. 10) also play seven consective road gamesGoing globalThe NBA will host its first regular-season games in Manchester, England with regular-season matchups between the Spurs and the Wolves, both on Jan. 14 (2 pm ET, Amazon Prime) and Jan. 17 (10:30 am ET). The NBA typically hosts pre-season games for select teams overseas, but these games bring higher stakes. Both the Wolves and Spurs will have additional time to settle into an area, a luxury most teams dont have on trips. But they also may face a bigger workload both with off-day practices and promotional appearances.NBA Cup features the Sixers prominently To no ones surprise, the NBA will showcase the Sixers newly formed Super Team. One of many examples: the NBA slotted the Sixers in marquee matchups during NBA Cup Group Play. The Sixers will host the Knicks on Oct. 30 (7:30 pm ET, Amazon Prime), visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 6 (7:30 pm ET, Amazon Prime) and then host the Miami Heat on Nov. 25 (5 pm ET, ESPN). The Sixers are in East Group B that include the NBAs defending champions (Knicks) and three playoff contenders (Cleveland, Miami and Indiana Pacers). The Sixers will compete in group play against two of James two former teams (Cleveland, Miami) and an emerging team that will field a healthy Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana). SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGood vibes poweringDjokovic return to CincinnatiSerbia's Novak Djokovic brings good memories into his US Open tuneup event at Cincinnati, where he is a three-time champion (Adrian Dennis)Novak Djokovic brings a boatload of good memories into this edition of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters, an event he has won three times. The 38-year-old Serbian is using the tournament as his only official tune-up for the August 30 start of the US Open, taking to the court for the first time since his Wimbledon semi-final against Jannik Sinner. On Thursday, Djokovic was surprised by a previously unnoticed fact: the then-teenager had played his first Masters 1000 main draw here in 2005.He went on to lift Cincinnati titles in 2018, 2020 and 2023, when he beat Carlos Alcaraz in three dramatic sets to win his third trophy."Great memories. It took me a while to win my first title here," Djokovic said. "It was a hard hurdle for me. Once I got the first title, it was a huge relief."In a sense, (you are) coming back knowing you've won at least once."Djokovic called his latest trophy win over Alcaraz -- in a tournament-record three hours and 49 minutes -- "one of the most epic best-of-three matches that I was ever a part of."With the resting Sinner and the wrist-injured Alcaraz missing from this edition, Djokovic's chances of a possible fourth Cincinnati trophy are at least decent. As his career starts to inevitably wind down, Djokovic's schedule has reduced. He stands 14-5 this season and is still seeking a first title of 2026.str/js0 Comments 0 Shares 106 Views 0 Reviews -
