SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArijon Ibrahimovi appreciates investment from Bayern Munich boss Vincent KompanyHEIDENHEIM, GERMANY - DECEMBER 21: Head coach Vincent Kompany of FC Bayern Mnchen (R) and Arijon Ibrahimovic of 1. FC Heidenheim greet each other ahead of the Bundesliga match between 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 and FC Bayern Mnchen at Voith-Arena on December 21, 2025 in Heidenheim, Germany. (Photo by Sebastian El-Saqqa - firo sportphoto/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesArijon Ibrahimovi is hoping that some extra attention from Vincent Kompany can help take his finishing to another level. The Bayern Munich youngster recently revealed that Kompany personally approached him for an individualized finishing drill, with the exercise designed to address one of the most important aspects of scoring goals concentration. It was really cool that he came up to me and gave me a personalized finishing drill. Specifically, the focus was on improving my concentration in front of goal, Ibrahimovi told FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Arijon Ibrahimovi working on his first-time finishing with Vincent Kompany @FCBayernpic.twitter.com/I0GvCcWcaL Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) August 2, 2026That detail says plenty about Kompanys approach to developing his players. Rather than simply putting Ibrahimovi through a generic finishing session, the Bayern Munich head coach identified a specific area where the attacker can improve and tailored the work accordingly. For a young player trying to establish himself, those little details can make a major difference. Ibrahimovi has the technical ability and attacking instincts to make an impact, but becoming more consistent in front of goal could be the next step in his development. It is also encouraging to see Kompany taking such a hands-on approach with Bayern Munichs younger players. The manager has repeatedly emphasized the importance of development and giving talented youngsters opportunities, and moments like this demonstrate that development does not only happen during matches. For Ibrahimovi, the message is simple sharpen the concentration, become more clinical, and make every opportunity count. If he can turn that work on the training ground into production when the games matter, he could give Kompany another intriguing attacking option this season.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user accountand get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreatecommunity postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts0 Comments 0 Shares 231 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCade Cavalli flirts with perfection as the Washington Nationals stomp the CubsWASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 13: Cade Cavalli #24 of the Washington Nationals high-fives teammates in the dugout in the eighth inning after allowing only one hit in eight innings pitched against of the Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park on August 13, 2026 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesComing off of two losses where the pitching got shelled, the Nats needed a great performance from Cade Cavalli, and boy did they get it. The right hander flirted with a no-hitter and dominated one of the best lineups in baseball. It was a masterclass by a pitcher who is coming into his own.Cavalli has been solid all season long, but lately he has taken things to a different level. Across his past 10 starts, Cavalli has a 2.43 ERA. Even more impressive to me is the fact he has gone at least 7 innings in his past 7 starts and in 9 of his past 10 outings. His transformation into a front of the rotation arm has come.Cade Cavalli today:8 IP 1 H 0 R 2 BB 10 K 14 whiffsHe now has a 2.43 ERA over his last 10 starts. The breakout has been awesome!pic.twitter.com/c8pEXN1OXU Andrew DeCeglie (@Andrew_FBB) August 13, 2026The story of this game was Cavallis flirtation with a no-hitter. He threw 6.2 innings without allowing a hit, before giving up a bloop single to Michael Busch. The idea of a no-no was actually on Cavallis mind very early in the game for a funny reason.A couple days ago Jake Irvin gave Cavalli his notes on the Cubs hitters, something they dont normally do. Cavalli said he told Irvin, If I throw a no-hitter, I am going to need these from you every time. Of course that was in a joking manner, but as Cavalli and Irvin saw each other in the tunnel they shared a big smile according to Cade. I would venture to guess that Cavalli will be looking at Irvins notes again before his next start even though he did not get the no-hitter.Overall, it was just pure domination from Cavalli. He had such great feel for his breaking balls and was bullying Cubs hitters with them. His curveball and sweeper were actually his two most used pitches on the afternoon.Cavalli got a good, but not spectacular 14 whiffs on the day, with 8 of them coming on his breaking balls. However, he was able to get 21 called strikes, which is an extremely high number. A bunch of those came on his two breaking pitches which the Cubs could not pull the trigger on.Fittingly, his outing came to a climax in the 8th inning when he froze Michael Conforto on a 3-2 sweeper. Cavalli was fired up coming off the mound, screaming into his glove as he completed the best start of his career. It was a moment of pure jubilation for the righty who turns 28 tomorrow.Cade Cavalli's 9th and 10th Ksthru 8 pic.twitter.com/8HAbsQGSbL Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) August 13, 2026As the season has gone along, Cavalli has matured so much as a pitcher. Keibert Ruiz talked about how impressed he has been with Cavallis command and the way he can move his pitches around the zone. Blake Butera also lauded his ability to go deep into games. However, this game was not just about Cade. After a slow start by both offenses, the Nats were the group who was able to figure things out. They were getting flummoxed by Kevin Gausmans fastball/splitter combination the first time around. As they faced him a second time though, the group adjusted. That started in the 4th inning when the Nats got on the board thanks to an RBI double by Dylan Crews. However, the 5th inning was when the Nats really broke things open. They got one run across thanks to a sac fly, but with two outs and a runner on 1st, it seemed like that would be it.The boys had other plans though. CJ Abrams snuck a single through the hole which brought up the Nats new star Abimelec Ortiz. The breakout slugger launched his third homer in the last four games out to right field. That blew the game open and made it 5-0 Nats.Abimelec Ortiz in his first 11 career games:10-29 (.345 AVG) | 4 HR | 8 RBI.793 SLG | 1.160 OPS | 212 wRC+What a start pic.twitter.com/mWKEtDnJNn Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media) August 13, 2026To say Ortiz has had an instant impact with the Nats would be an understatement. The rookie is hitting .333 with 4 homers and a 1.122 OPS through his first 11 games. I thought Ortiz would not take long to acclimate to the big leagues, but this is just out of this world. He just looks like the complete hitter so far.The Nats may have lost the series, but it was good to avoid the sweep and finish the home stand on a high note. With that win, the Nats secured a 4-2 homestand which sets them up nicely moving forward. They are now 4.5 games out of the Wild Card, and the schedule sets up nicely the rest of the month, at least on paper. After a tough start to the month, this group has found their bearings again. Now it is time to build off of this and head to New York ready to roll. Today was a Cade Cavalli masterclass with some Abimelec Ortiz lighting strikes mixed in. That is something all Nats fans love to see.0 Comments 0 Shares 232 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMField of Dreams becomes the Hall of Fame, as 26 members come out of the corn for Phillies-Twins gameDYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) Major League Baseball came back to the Field of Dreams carrying a big piece of Cooperstown. The pregame pomp before the Minnesota Twins played the Philadelphia Phillies adjacent to the farmland where the 1989 fantasy was filmed featured 26 members of the Hall of Fame emerging from the outfield corn just as the ghost players did in the movie. With some of the loudest cheers saved for former Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt and former Twins catcher Joe Mauer, the capacity crowd of about 8,000 at the newly constructed ballpark in northeast Iowa soaked up the surreal atmosphere as the aged stars strolled into the infield for proper introductions.Fireworks were launched from the cornfield during the national anthem, and Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber followed with his own big bang a stalk shot to right on Twins starter Taj Bradley's third pitch of the game. After stealing the show at the inaugural 2021 event, which was played on the same footprint at a temporary setup that also hosted the 2022 game, Kevin Costner did not appear. But the star of the film as the restless farmer Ray Kinsella who reconnects with his late father by playing catch on his front-yard ballfield narrated the pregame video that helped pump some old-guard nostalgia through the new-school broadcast on global streaming giant Netflix. Both teams emerged from the corn together to take their places along the lines like on opening day, and Twins All-Star Byron Buxton who came off the injured list in the afternoon to play took the microphone to evoke a line from James Earl Jones, who played the author Terence Mann in the movie. The one constant through all the years has been baseball," Buxton said before Schwarber followed with a brief script on an idyllic late-summer night after heavy rain moved through the area earlier in the day. Then came the legends, and living ones at that, unlike those wool-clad lads in the movie. Schmidt and Steve Carlton wore Phillies uniforms along with Jim Kaat, who played for both teams. Mauer and Bert Blyleven donned Twins jerseys. The others Andruw Jones, Harold Baines, Fred McGriff, Adrin Beltr, Andre Dawson, Larry Walker, Cal Ripken Jr., Ivn Rodrguez, Jim Thome, Scott Rolen, Tony Prez, Tony La Russa, Jeff Kent, Fergie Jenkins, Joe Torre, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner, Rollie Fingers, Lee Smith and Trevor Hoffman helped form a half-ring around the diamond to represent about one-third of the Cooperstown contingent that's still alive. This was the largest such gathering at a ballpark, not including the annual ceremonies at the Hall of Fame in upstate New York, since the All-Star Game in 2008 that feted the final season at old Yankee Stadium. No place evokes baseball and family nostalgia like the Field of Dreams siteBefore the game, Buxton played catch with his 12-year-old son on the nearby movie site that remains open to the public for no cost on non-event days. Twins manager Derek Shelton did the same with his 78-year-old father, a former educator who coached him on his high school baseball team. Shelton later complained that his arm was in weaker shape. You dont get old enough that an experience like that is not emotional to be able to do something with your father, Shelton said.Phillies manager Don Mattingly, whose son just happens to be the club's general manager, found himself harkening back to Indiana childhood ballgames with his brothers upon arrival on the team bus. This place reminds me of when I was a kid, Mattingly said. "Youd go down a dirt road, and all of sudden youd see a cornfield and then thered be a field there."Both teams wore throwback uniforms the Twins in home threads from their first season in 1961 and the Phillies in road jerseys circa 1940 in step with the hand-operated scoreboard in right field. The permanent ballpark built for all kinds of events including the opportunity to host MLB games on a recurring basis also has plenty of amenities with the video board in left field, a state-of-the-art sound system and, of course, indoor plumbing. The feel of the farm was just as strong as the buzz of the ballpark, with natural sponsor John Deere pledging $100,000 per home run hit to hunger-relief organization Feeding America. The special environment didn't erase the circumstance of the stretch run of the regular season, though, with both the Twins and Phillies in the thick of their respective wild-card races. Were not in Minnesota for three days," Phillies star Bryce Harper said, "but were still playing the Twins three times and we've still got to win some games."___See APs full MLB coverage here0 Comments 0 Shares 199 Views 0 Reviews -
