Gasperini Rated 6th-Best Manager in the World by ESPN
CARDIFF, WALES - AUGUST 01: Gian Piero Gasperini, head coach of AS Roma, smiles before the pre-season friendly match between Cardiff City and AS Roma at Cardiff City Stadium on August 01, 2026 in Cardiff, Wales. (Photo by Dan Istitene/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesIt may be a bit rude of ESPN to interrupt our countdown season with its own ranking, but well give the self-professed Worldwide Leader in Sports a pass this time. While weve spent the past week and a half sorting through Romas brightest U-23 prospects, ESPN decided to focus on the men on the touchline, ranking the top 30 football managers in the world.Compiled by Tor-Kristian Karlsen, a Norwegian football scout and former chief executive and sporting director at AS Monaco, the initial list of 50 candidates was whittled down to 30 based on the following criteria:Coaching acumen:The ability to apply coaching principles to a match setting, physical preparation and in-game management.Style:The attractiveness of the footballing style. Entertainment value is paramount here, as is a managers capability to dictate the proceedings of a game in a proactive (as opposed to reactive, i.e., play on the break) manner. An attacking style will produce a higher score.People management:Motivational skills and the capacity to get maximum performance out of a squad. The degree to which players respond to and play for the manager.Communication:A managers ability to instill trust in their project internally, to club directors and players, and to the outside world (media, supporters). Their expertise of conveying a message clearly through well-chosen words and PR skills. This also extends to in-game and touchline behavior, including managers attitude toward officials, colleagues and players.History/achievements:Success and results. Though trophies are the main currency of achievement in football, other accomplishments such as winning promotion, getting teams out of relegation trouble, taking unlikely teams into Europe or overperforming despite minimal resources count, too.X factor:Ability to surprise and come up with new ideas. The likelihood of being considered for top jobs in the future. The resilience to bounce back from a poor run of results.Starting with new AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim at 30 and ending with our old friend Luis Enrique at number 1, the list includes many names familiar to Giallorossi supporters, including Paulo Fonseca (27), Jos Mourinho (24), and a few current and former adversaries, including Cesc Fabregas (15) and Antonio Conte (13), to name a few.On Gasperini, ESPN noted his achievements at Atalanta before praising his intense style of play:Coaching acumen: 17/20Style: 15/20People management: 15/20Communication: 14/20History/achievements: 6/10X factor: 5/10TOTAL: 72/100Few can match Gasperini for stability and lasting impact. In a nine-year spell, he transformed Atalanta into a real force in Italian football, leading them to repeated Champions League qualification and their first major silverware since 1963 in the 2024 Europa League.Gasperini has very demanding standards in training, likes to play a high defensive line that relies on pressing and positional rotation in a fluid 3-4-3 formation, and champions both the intensity and mental resilience of his side. Last season, despite his reputation for attacking play, Roma conceded only 31 league goals Serie As second-best record and when his side struggled to score early on, he dug deep into his vast knowledge of the game by working tirelessly on attacking movement and gave his midfielders more freedom to push into the box. The January arrival ofDonyell Malenalso helped, as the Dutchman scored 14 goals from the final 18 games.Ranked directly above Gasperini were Unai Emery (5), Hansi Flick (4), Mikel Arteta (3), Pep Guardiola (2), and Luis Enrique (1). So, what do you think: Did ESPN nail it with their top 30? Was Gasperini ranked too high or too low?

DiJonai Carrington Hits Two More Players In The Face After Cunningham Clash, Picks Up Another Technical In Ugly Loss
Image credit - Flickr/Hannah Kevorkian | The NextDiJonai Carrington spent last week insisting the Sophie Cunningham fallout was overblown. Four days later, she gave critics fresh footage to work with.During Chicagos 91-71 loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, Carrington made contact with two different players above the neck. She was guarding Cecilia Zandalasini on the perimeter when her swipe at the ball caught the Valkyries forward near the eye. Later in the game, she jumped with Tiffany Hayes on a layup attempt, missed the ball entirely, and landed a hand across Hayes mouth.Neither play was ruled a flagrant or technical foul. Carrington did pick up her second technical of the season in the third quarter for arguing with an official, adding another entry to a growing list of incidents.DiJonai Carrington not happy with no call on the shot She receives a technical foul.#WNBAonUSA | Sky | Valkyries pic.twitter.com/rL9OYfxrQR USA Sports (@usasports) August 13, 2026The timing made the plays impossible to ignore. Just last week, Carrington was ejected for a Flagrant 2 on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, a foul during a layup attempt that left Cunningham bleeding from the mouth.Minutes after her ejection, Carrington posted WHITE PRIVILEGE on her Instagram Threads account, a message many read as an accusation that race shaped the officiating decision.Carrington has since said that reading was a misunderstanding of her intent. She addressed the criticism directly in a post on X two days after the Cunningham foul.Ive never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption), Carrington wrote. I actually went to school, one of the top universities might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it.The WNBA has not issued any public discipline for either the flagrant foul or the social media post, and has not responded to requests for comment on the matter. That silence has become part of the story in its own right, especially with Carrington now tied to three separate face-area incidents over a four-day stretch.Carringtons night against Golden State was rough by any measure. She finished with three points on 1-of-9 shooting, adding three turnovers across 24 minutes as the Sky dropped their game to Golden States fifth straight win. Cunningham, back off the bench for Chicago, managed just three points on 1-of-9 shooting herself in the same contest.A Reputation DiJonai Carrington Has Fought For YearsThis is not new territory for Carrington. During the 2024 WNBA playoffs, she caught Caitlin Clark in the eye on a defensive close-out, leaving Clark with a black eye and sparking a similar round of accusations. Both players called that contact unintentional at the time.Carrington pushed back hard against the dirty-player label as recently as June 2025, writing on social media that she simply plays hard and never lets up on a contested ball. That defense gets harder to sustain every time a new clip surfaces, and this week produced two more.None of this means Carrington set out to hurt anyone against Golden State. Her left hand on the Zandalasini swipe, and her closeout on Hayes both look like a player selling out for a stop, not someone hunting contact. But intent stops mattering once the pattern gets this long, and officials, opponents, and the league office are all watching her far more closely now than they were two weeks ago.The next flagrant call against Carrington will not be judged in isolation. It will be read against Cunningham, Zandalasini, Hayes, and Clark before them. Whether the WNBA finally steps in with a suspension or a fine may end up shaping that read as much as anything Carrington does on the floor.

Simply not true Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong lets rip at Gerard Romero in explosive interview
VALENCIA, SPAIN - MAY 23: Frenkie De Jong of FC Barcelona looks on during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Valencia CF and FC Barcelona at Estadi de Mestalla on May 23, 2026 in Valencia, Spain. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesBarcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has given a fresh interview to the clubs media and seems to have gone to war with reporter Gerard Romero. The Dutchman, who has hit out at the press before, has expressly spoken about Romero and how hes been angry and irritated by some of his false reports.De Jong responded to a claim from Romero that he had refused to play for Barcelona in the Champions League against Atletico and vowed to call him out on any future reports that are untrue. For example, Gerard Romero. He said, and he started all of this, that I refused to play against Atletico in the Champions League last year. Thats false. Its false. Its simply not true, he told the clubs media. As I said, my dream is to play for Barca, especially in important Champions League matches. Of course I want to play. I dont understand how you can say that I refused to play. And obviously, if people get angry and if thats the only information they have, I understand. Thats why Im explaining. Then he said that my relationship with the coach is very bad, which is completely false. I have a very good relationship with the coach. I talk to him a lot. You can ask him about all of this. Its completely false. Theyve also said that my relationship with the club is bad, which is also not true, because I talk a lot with people at the club, with the directors and so on. Then they said Im being punished. That was Gerard Romero again, and I want to mention it because I think hes already told more lies in the past. But Im not going to let it slide anymore, because he needs to understand that if he puts things out that arent true, Im going to call him out on it.De Jong also admitted he wanted to get that anger off his chest so that he can focus on recovering from his current knee injury and that hes doing all he can to return as quickly as possible.

What exactly was behind Franco Colapinto's Miami breakthrough at Alpine?
Motorsport photoAccording to Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, Alpine was overtaken by Racing Bulls in the final weeks before Formula 1's summer break. Both drivers say it is simply a matter of car development Red Bull's sister team has introduced more upgrades, and more effective ones, than the Enstone squad which means Alpine is pinning a lot of hope on its upgrade package for Zandvoort. On a personal level, however,Colapinto has found his stride since the April break. Before then, the gap to Gasly was often larger than he would have liked, but since the Miami Grand Prix, Colapinto has recorded five points finishes and finished ahead of his French team-mate four times on Sundays.Read Also:Pierre Gasly: Alpine's Dutch GP upgrades "critical" for F1 2026 chancesThose results are in line with howColapinto felt during winter testing in Bahrain, although the opening race weekends that followed proved difficult a dip that Colapinto and the team struggled to explain at the time."I think having a new car, as well as two new cars, has been different compared to the test. In winter testing, I felt very strong and comfortable, but as soon as we moved to two cars in the first few races I really struggled,"Colapinto told Motorsport.com.Asked what exactly changed when the team switched to two chassis for Melbourne,Colapinto clarified that it was not so much about how the car felt, but rather what the stopwatch was showing: "It's not like the feeling was gone, the pace was gone, more than anything."I was still feeling good in the car, but I was looking at the lap times and that's the part I couldn't really understand or get my head around."That made the first few race weekends particularly difficult toanalyse. Colapinto said he still felt comfortable, but his feeling behind the wheel was no longer translating into the lap times he would have expected."I think the most important thing as a driver is to always understand why things happen, and to be honest, many times in the first few races I couldn't understand," he continued.During the first three race weekends, Colapinto couldnt always understand why he was losing time to Gasly, even though his feeling in the car was still goodDuring the first three race weekends, Colapinto couldnt always understand why he was losing time to Gasly, even though his feeling in the car was still goodIn Miami,Colapinto was given a new and lighter chassis, although he stresses that he does not want to suggest there was anything wrong with the previous one. The problem was simply difficult to isolate within Alpine's overall package."I don't know if something was wrong, but when we put the entire package together after the first three rounds, everything just improved and the half-a-tenth that I was losing per corner was gone," he explained."It's tricky to know exactly what happened or why it was because when you change a lot of things, it's tricky to say, 'this is the reason why we are quicker now'."It's the same when you do many set-up changes and you are quicker, you don't know which one has been the biggest improvement."The major upgrade package and the new chassis both played a role although the team believes the latter also had a psychological effect and the April break also contributed to what could be described as the Miami breakthrough. In Miami, Colapinto was given a lighter chassis, although he says that is certainly not the only reason behind his improved formIn Miami, Colapinto was given a lighter chassis, although he says that is certainly not the only reason behind his improved formDuring that month without races,Colapinto and the engineers had more time to analyse all the data in detail, with the Argentine stressing that significant progress was made in terms of energy management a crucial topic in 2026."Yes, I think energy management is a key element that we are really consistent with now," he said."In Japan, I lost four tenths from one lap to another just by deploying differently or by going on throttle out of the last corner differently. I think after that race it became a lot more consistent and that is one of the steps weve made as a team."And personally, I think I was quite inconsistent in Japan as well, so thoselearnings have helped me a lot."All of that has contributed toColapinto taking a step forward and being able to compete with Gasly again. Alpine's next step is expected to come at Zandvoort, with the upgrade package that the French squad hopes will help it respond to Racing Bulls and find more pace overall.Read Also:"Everyone was happy except him" Franco Colapinto shares telling Flavio Briatore anecdoteFranco Colapinto opens up about the toughest moment of his F1 careerTo read more Motorsport.com articles visit our website.
