It means that Simeone now enters his sixth season without a trophy, following the La Liga win in 2021, in what is his sixteenth season in charge. South Korea international Kang-in Lee arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported 35 million ($40 million), inheriting the number seven shirt left vacant by Antoine Griezmanns departure, while Spain national team full-back Alex Grimaldo and Denmark midfielder Morten Hjulmand joined earlier in the window to reinforce the base of the team.Grimaldo, Hjulmand and Lee represent a deliberate shift toward players with proven pedigree at elite clubs, joining from recent Bundesliga, Liga Portugal and Ligue Une champions in Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting CP and Paris Saint-Germain.Talks are ongoing for further additions, with Tottenham and Argentina defender Cristin Romero one of the names most strongly linked. Atltico has repeatedly ruled out a sale, and lvarez has returned to preseason training with the club, seemingly ending months of speculation. He remains the player Simeone intends to build the attack around, and his continued presence, after a summer many at the club feared would end differently, is arguably Atltico's biggest result before a ball has been kicked.What remains to be seen is whether lvarez will be motivated and focused. His return of only eight league goals last season was disappointing, and all eyes will be on the Argentine. Injury to Alexander Srloth in preseason preparations means that he could be the only forward available when the campaign begins. He couldnt ask for a better opportunity.The one to watch: Pablo BarriosThis season will be crucial for Pablos Barrios. Now aged 23, he comes off the back of an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign which saw him miss almost the entirety of the second half of the season. This time around, he has the leading role in midfield, with captain Koke expected to be entering his final season, and other rivals Johnny Cardoso and signing Morten Hjulmand will need time after undergoing surgery and adjusting to the Spanish league.Few doubt Barrios raw talent, with an impressive passing ability and vision tying in with stamina and a work rate which allows him to be a true box-to-box midfielder. The question marks come over consistency and whether he can stay fit for the full season, after his struggles in the previous campaign.In Simeone, he has a supporter. The most likely scenario is a move away from the 4-2-3-1 of last season, to revert to a new look 3-4-1-2.That would see stalwart Jan Oblak continue as first choice in goal, with a back three in front of him. At the time of writing, with the imminent arrival of Cristin Romero yet to be confirmed, that would most likely include promising youngster Marc Pubill on the right, Robin Le Normand centrally, and last summers signing David Hancko on the left.In the midfield four, we could see the more defensively-assured Marcos Llorente, or the more offensive Giuliano Simeone, depending on the opponent, on the right flank. On the left, new arrival Alex Grimaldo will take over from Matteo Ruggeri. In midfield, captain Koke will likely rotate with signing Morten Hjulmand and Pablo Barrios.Ahead of them, Kang-In Lee will be first choice in the number 10 role, though lex Baena returns from the World Cup full of confidence after a difficult first season at the Metropolitano.The front two is most likely to be formed by Julin lvarez and Ademola Lookman, with the Nigerian international offering the tactical flexibility to change shape and move to the left flank as required.The first big testAtletico open the league campaign at home to newly promoted Malaga on August 16, a fixture that on paper should offer little resistance before the seasons shape becomes clearer, but is likely to prove a real challenge with Simeone only having had his first-team regulars in training for a week. The next early test comes on September 20, when Real Madrid visit the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the first Madrid derby of the secon Jose Mourinho era. A home game against their fiercest rival, six matchdays into the season and with all three of the summers new attacking pieces bedded in, will be the first real measure of whether this reshaped Atltico squad is built to close the gap on Real Madrid and Barcelona.Prediction: Champions League qualification and a focus on the cups, againLast season ultimately ended in disappointment for Atleti, but it was a clear indication of the route forward. Even with very strong finances, Atltico still lacks the squad depth to be able to compete with Real Madrid or Barcelona over the course of a full season in the league.The essential objective there will be to qualify for the Champions League for a 14th consecutive year, but the focus will be on seeking silverware, either domestically in the Copa del Rey or Spanish Super Cup, or on the continent. Atltico has the quality in their squad to compete, particularly with the likes of Jan Oblak, Koke and Julin lvarez forming a key part of the spine, and they know how to turn up for a knock-out tie against any of Europes best.
