The 23-year-old enters his 15th major league appearance with a 5-7 record, a 4.46 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP and 84 strikeouts over 72 2/3 innings. Over his last four starts, Jump has alternated between good and bad performances. LANDOVER, MARYLAND Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley made the right decision to start Malik Willis in the preseason opener and he made the right decision to pull the quarterback after one series.Perfect. Perfect all around.Willis led only one drive but he was on the field for more than seven minutes and he led his team 93 yards and he led a touchdown and it was time to get off the field and away from any Commanders' danger.Perfectly perfect. OK, so there was one incompletion on five attempts.But it wasn't even Willis' fault. Rookie Caleb Douglas, who later made a terrific, one-handed, tip-it-in-the-air, deep-ball, circus catch, forgot on one deep out that he's in the NFL now.That one foot would have been good enough at Texas Tech, but not in Landover, Maryland, against the Washington Commanders of the NFL.The Dolphins don't have a ton of reasons for hope this season. And they may surely win four of five games.But can you imagine if they learn Willis is the franchise quarterback they've craved since Dan Marino?Miami Dolphins news: Malik Willis provides reason for hopeOh, I know, I know. It was like one series, against a team holding out 10 or so defensive starters.But do we have to even mention that part?Willis looked poised. He looked confident. He looked strong-armed.Willis looked mobile. Throwing on the run. And running to run.Willis has made steady improvement in Miami Gardens, in the spring and summer practice open to media folks. And it showed on a pleasant summer Friday evening in the Mid-Atlantic.Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan have repeatedly vouched for Willis. They worked with him in Green Bay and surely the three-year contract was a worthwhile role of the dice.It's a reasonable contract. And those two believe there is a reasonable chance that Willis is so good - despite being devoid of top receiving weapons - that they won't have a to draft a Top 5 quarterback in 2027.We'll see. We're a long, long ways from that decision.Miami Dolphins depth chart: Jeff Hafley wanted starters on fieldBut it was telling that Hafley wanted Willis on the field in his first game as head coach. The Commanders had no plan to put Jayden Daniels anywhere near anyone in aqua and orange on this night.Hafley wanted Willis and running back De'Von Achane and the rookie Douglas and the entire offensive line out there to set a positive tone. Miami players and fans alike can go into preseason week 2 with some, well, some hope.It seems clear already that Miami made the right choice to not simply rolling with Quinn Ewers at quarterback this season. Ewers had a floater of an interception on Friday night. And he needs to perform better than he has so far this offseason.Hafley said this week that Willis has taken a step forward recently as a team leader.The Dolphins have legitimate reason to follow Willis from this point forward in 2026.It's clear he has talent. A 64, 258-pounder from Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon, Wesley is young for a freshman after reclassifying from 2027, but has a remarkable amount of physical and emotional maturity that made him a consensus five-star prospect ranked as the No. 32 player overall and the No. 6 edge in the 2026 cycle.Those attributes allowed the initial surge in Wesleys recruitment to happen three years ago when he was offered by Georgia, Washington, and USC. The following May, Oregon became a contender, offering Wesley and hosting him in Eugene for multiple visits before landing a pledge from the talented edge in May of last year. The Longhorns were late to offer, in late January, but got Wesley on campus during spring practice and kept pressing, ensuring that the commitment to the Ducks only lasted 17 days, and closed on an official visit in June. Ohio State was able to secure an official visit during the fall, although it wasnt enough to keep Wesley from signing with Texas.After a strong performance in the spring-ending open practice, Wesley faces significant expectations this year as the projected backup to star edge Colin Simmons.Hes gonna be a really good pass rusher this year, Jackson said. Hes gonna get to play a lot.The pass-rushing ability Wesley has shown on the Forty Acres fits with his high school evaluations, but becoming more than a situational player in 2026 will require some improvement, and represents a point of emphasis for new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.Definitely focus on the run a lot right now. Champ wants us to focus on the run a lot, so really our whole edge room hasnt even gotten to our full bag with pass rush were just focused on stopping the run right now, and then when we get that down, were gonna start focusing on our pass rush more and try to get into that, Jackson said.Expect Wesley to make an instant impact on passing downs.Like Wesley, Okpala was also impressive during the open practice as a sure tackler capable of fitting gaps effectively. Hes going to have to play a lot. Hes got to step up. Special teams, too.Look for Okpala on both coverage units early in the season as the presence of senior edge/linebacker Brad Spence blocks the potential for playing time on defense.Like Okpala, Cummings spent a lot of time playing off the edge in high school at Carlsbad (Calif.), especially as a senior. The 64, 227-pounder has prototypical size at the position that belied his relatively modest rankings as the No. 33 linebacker and the No. 397 overall player in the 247Sports Composite rankings.Unlike Okpala, Cummings had a recruitment that was slow to develop with most of his offers coming during the spring of his junior season. Texas entered late, when Cummings was committed to Cal, and won a whirlwind recruitment that featured an early November offer, official visit for the Arkansas game, and a flip to the Horns in the week after the trip to Austin.Among the lower-rated recruits in the 2026 class for Texas, Cummings is one of the strongest bets to overachieve compared to his rankings thanks to that prototypical physical profile.Hes a stud, Nansen said. He can run, hes rangy, he can rush the passer. Hes got it all, and hes a very smart football player.According to Jackson, Cummings is already making plays, confirmed by a clip from practice showing a tackle for loss against freshman running back Jett Walker.Although that burgeoning playmaking ability is unlikely to result in significant playing time on defense this year, Cummings could compete for a spot on special teams, and all signs point towards a promising career on the Forty Acres, a trait he shares with the other two players cited by Jackson.

Facing primarily San Francisco backups, the second-year quarterback was inconsistent with his accuracy and never appeared to find a sustained rhythm.Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, missed several open receivers, particularly on slants and throws over the middle. His timing and footwork appeared uneven, and attempts to extend plays outside the pocket nearly resulted in turnovers.For a Titans team that spent the offseason building its offense around Ward, the uneven showing immediately raised questions. CINCINNATI (AP) Chase Burns gave up four hits and struck out eight in seven innings, Eugenio Surez hit an RBI double in the sixth, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Friday night.Burns (14-2) did not give up a walk and allowed just one runner to reach second base. He has now thrown 131 innings this season, far exceeding the 43 1/3 innings he pitched last season and the 66 innings he tossed in the minor leagues.
