SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSan Diego Waves strong start fades as Denver finds the equalizerAug 14, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Wave FC forward Melanie Barcenas (7) shoots past Denver Summit FC defender Eva Gaetino (23) during the first half at Snapdragon Stadium.SAN DIEGO Melanie Barcenas' masterpiece goal put San Diego Wave FC ahead at Snapdragon Stadium, but Denver Summit FC responded in the second half via a header to tie the match 1-1. Both teams earned a point Friday night.San Diego controlled the opening 45 minutes, but things shifted after halftime. Denver changed its strategy, pushing more players toward the attack, while the home team struggled to create enough chances to secure a second goal.We shouldve won the game, theres no doubt about it, Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall said postgame. We created more, and were the better team, but we didn't win.He also mentioned that they have a choice: feel sorry for themselves and make excuses, or acknowledge that the team played well while recognizing areas for improvement. The coach feels the match was a step in the right direction.San Diego is coming off a two-game road trip, in which they faced two of the top teams in the NWSL: Washington Spirit and Gotham FC. Lia Godfrey scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute to help weather the storm in Washington. Godfrey has nine goal contributions (five goals and four assists) and is a candidate for Rookie of the Year. This past Friday, former Wave forward Jaedyn Shaw, who spent three seasons in San Diego, scored just before halftime to keep Gotham in first place with 40 points through 19 matches. Eidevall was disappointed with the result and felt his team underperformed in their last match.Kimmi Ascanio (Thigh), Kenza Dali (Lower Leg), and Kiki Pickett (Ankle) were unavailable for San Diego tonight. Theres still no update on Catarina Macario (Heel). Eidevall said they are facing a tough time on the injury front, and some players are playing out of position.San Diego will face the expansion side, Denver Summit FC, for the second time this season. They faced off on April 25 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, where the Wave erased a two-goal deficit in the second half. The visiting team scored three goals in 16 minutes, and the go-ahead score was an own goal in the 65th minute. As of mid-August, Denver is a borderline playoff team with its 6-5-7 record and 23 points. Janine Sonis, a 31-year-old defender, leads the team with eight goals and is tied for the most assists with three. Meanwhile, Yazmeen Ryan, Natasha Flint, and Klara Melissa Kssler each have four goals in 2026. Their goalkeeper, Abby Smith, has 60 saves and four clean sheets in 18 matches. The Summit is coming off a big road win against Utah Royals FC, the third-best team in the standings, 2-1. Utah equalized in the 89th minute, but Sonis delivered yet again for Denver in the 4th minute of added time to secure the three points. She assisted the first goal as well. Before the match, San Diego honored longtime defender Kristen McNabb for becoming the first Wave FC player to reach 100 club appearances. McNabb has been with the team since its inception. There were six shots in the first dozen minutes, with Denver firing off four. Wave goalkeeper Sandra Paos blocked Ally Brazier's attempt, and Smith logged two early saves against Trinity Byars and Melanie Barcenas. An active start to the match. The first dangerous attack came in the 27th minute. Ludmila got past the Denver back line on a fast break and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. She sprinted sideways to get away from Smith, but her shot was wide righta clear missed opportunity for the Wave.Ludmilas goal-scoring struggles continue. She has scored just one goal in her first season with the club, despite having 41 shot attempts in 18 matches. The 31-year-old striker scored 10 goals for the Chicago Stars FC last season. The Sporting Tribune asked Eidevall about Ludmila's recent goal drought. Eidevall said she impacts the team with her runs in behind, pressing, and overall intensity. He expressed his confidence in the striker, stating that it's only a matter of time before she scores again.San Diego Wave forward Ludmila has been active in the attack but has only scored once this season. Jonas Eidevall is confident that shell find the back of the net, saying its just a matter of time. pic.twitter.com/1fp8LisNt5 Sebastian Sanchez (@Sanchez_Reports) August 15, 2026Barcenas opened the scoring shortly after. The 18-year-old forward continues to flash her skills on the pitch, and she just added another highlight play to her reel. Barcenas made several dribble moves to create space and launched a left-footed shot from outside the box. Her shot entered the bottom right of the net, just past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper. Gia Corley was credited with the assist. After the game, Barcenas said that she worked on the specific shot after training yesterday and is happy to see it translate onto the pitch in front of the fans. This was Barcenas's first goal since July 4th, bringing her total to four goals in 2026. She now has the most goals scored by a teenager in the league this year. The sky is the limit for the young San Diego native, and its easy to see why shes a fan favorite.Mel has some fantastic skills, both with her dribbling and her shooting, Eidevall said when talking about the impressive goal. He added that its great to see the confidence she plays with. This footwork and strike from Melanie Barcenas pic.twitter.com/aDFmYNFt4i National Womens Soccer League (@NWSL) August 15, 2026San Diego controlled most of the offensive momentum in the first half, while the visiting team struggled to create opportunities after a solid start.About 10 minutes into the second half, Ludmila almost broke free again. The ball deflected past the goalkeeper, but a Summit defender cleared it from inside the box.Denver tied the match moments later. Two of the most productive players from the Summit teamed up to score the equalizer in the 58th minute. Sonis crossed a perfectly placed pass into the box, finding Ryan for the header goal. It was a difficult shot for Paos to block. This was Soniss 12th goal contribution in the season. The dummy from Ally Brazier The cross from Janine Sonis The header from Yazmeen Ryan pic.twitter.com/E3qMmlTQHT National Womens Soccer League (@NWSL) August 15, 2026Barcenas almost scored another banger a few minutes later, but the ball hit the top crossbar. McNabb had a strong shot inside the box, but Smith denied it. Adriana Leon, a veteran forward, was subbed on for Ludmila.Leon made her presence felt right away. She received a long pass in the attacking third and scored. The stadium erupted, but the official marked her offside.Eidevall inserted Laila Harbert, Tatum Wynalda, Gabi Portilho, and Brooklyn Courtnall in the second half, looking to break the tie. Harbert, a 19-year-old English midfielder, signed with the club in late July and made her debut tonight. Same goes for Courtnall.Four minutes of extra time were added, but neither team can break the tie. Denver had four more shots than San Diego, but the home team held the ball for slightly longer (55-45 split). The attendance at Snapdragon Stadium was 13,463.San Diego Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall breaks down his teams performance against Denver: pic.twitter.com/Ec1QqcKQpb Sebastian Sanchez (@Sanchez_Reports) August 15, 2026When breaking down the second half, Eidevall said that they pushed his team back in their own half, which affected their energy and ability to transition offensively.San Diego will continue its three-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 21, as they host Utah, another NWSL contender. They are coming off a 3-2 win over Bay FC. Clo Lacasse and Mina Tanaka have been a dynamic duo, combining for 12 goals and 12 assists this season. 0 Comments 0 Shares 134 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid believe Mourinho can turn under-fire star into a 100 million player – reportReal Madrid believe Mourinho can turn under-fire star into a 100 million player reportEduardo Camavingas future at Real Madrid appeared uncertain not long ago, but the French midfielder has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of Jose Mourinhos arrival.Despite recent questions over his form and growing competition in the Real Madrid midfield, Camavinga has become a regular feature in Mourinhos plans during pre-season.Now, according to journalist Abraham Romero, as relayed by Defensa Central, Real Madrid are convinced that Camavinga possesses a level of potential that many of their alternative midfield targets cannot match. The club believe that, under the right guidance of new manager Jose Mourinho, the Frenchman can develop into a player valued at between 100 million and 120 million. That belief appears to have played a role in Real Madrids decision-making, particularly after the clubs pursuit of Rodri did not result in a signing.Real Madrid see a higher ceiling in CamavingaCamavingas standing at the club has remained stronger internally than his recent performances may suggest. The 23-year-old has endured a difficult period, with his form over the last year and a half raising doubts about whether he could become a long-term leader in the Real Madrid midfield.Real Madrid have full faith in Camavingas potential. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)However, Romero explained that there are influential figures at Valdebebas who continue to trust the players ability and ceiling.Camavinga is one of the reasons, until the World Cup final, why there wasnt complete unanimity regarding Rodri at Valdebebas.Hes coming off two bad years, especially the last one, but for many members of the board, hes shown he has the quality, having played in two Champions League finals and major knockout rounds. His last year and a half has indeed been poor, but within Valdebebas, they believe he has a ceiling that other players dont have, and perhaps superior to the other market options available, apart from Rodri, who is a special case, the journalist said.Furthermore, according to Romero, Rodris arrival could have dramatically changed Camavingas situation. If Rodri had arrived, Camavinga would have either left or had a secondary role.Without Rodri, the feeling is that Camavinga has a high ceiling, especially if he focuses and Mourinho gets the best out of him, he added.Mourinho has made Camavinga a key part of pre-seasonCamavingas importance under Mourinho has been visible throughout Real Madrids preparations.Camavinga has played a lot under Jose Mourinho. (Photo by Jose Manuel Alvarez Rey/Getty Images)The Frenchman is the only outfield player to have featured in every pre-season match so far, playing a total of 405 minutes across games against Alcorcon, Leganes, Ferencvaros and Deportivo La Coruna. That record is particularly notable given the competition for places in the Real Madrid midfield.Romero believes the clubs faith in Camavinga was strengthened by the decision not to bring in another major midfield signing. The club believes he can reach the level of those players who command 100-120 million in the Premier League. Camavinga has been important to Real Madrid since he was 19, and they have confidence in him.If another important player had arrived, he might have left. But instead of spending 100 million with a new coach, they opted for Camavinga. In the end, hes just another rotation player, well-liked and valued at the club, concluded RomeroMourinhos faith could now allow Camavinga to rebuild his standing and establish himself as one of the key players in the squad.0 Comments 0 Shares 148 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona priority transfer target expected to miss training next week amid future uncertaintyBarcelona priority transfer target expected to miss training next week amid future uncertaintyIt has been more than a week now since Barcelona started active negotiations with Manchester City for Rodri. The 30-year-old Spanish midfielder gave his approval to choose Bara over Real Madrid as his next destination.Since then, the Catalan club have been trying to reach an agreement with the Cityzens, with the club now closing in on an agreement with their third bid. Now, according to Jack Gaughan, speaking on the Esteemed Kompany Manchester City fan channel, Rodri believes there will be clarity over his future shortly.Rodri expects transfer situation to be resolvedThe Spain international is not expected to participate in Citys training sessions next week because he believes the ongoing negotiations surrounding his future will have reached a conclusion.Barcelona are confident of striking an agreement for Rodri. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)For Barcelona, that is significant. The biggest obstacle for them has not been convincing Rodri, but rather agreeing a fee they deem acceptable within their financial means. It is worth remembering here that the Spaniard is in the final year of his contract and, at 30, it would not make much sense for Bara to pay an exorbitant fee. However, City are making sure on their end that they accept a fee that reflects Rodris status as a Ballon dOr winner and arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world.Bara have been preparing a bid of around 60 million in a fixed fee, which they hope City find acceptable enough to give their approval for the transfer.Flick waiting for his midfield reinforcementHansi Flick would be receiving one of the most experienced midfielders available if Barcelona can finish the operation.Rodri wants to play for Barcelona. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)Rodri would immediately add control, positional discipline and leadership to a midfield already packed with technical quality. His arrival would also allow Barcelona to manage Marc Bernals development carefully rather than placing immediate responsibility on the youngster after his breakthrough.Rodris expected absence from Citys training next week does not guarantee that he will become a Barcelona player. The final club-to-club agreement still needs to be reached. However, it does suggest that the transfer saga is in its final lap. For years, Bara have spent time asking the question: Who are we replacing Busquets with?It finally looks like the club are closing in on a pure defensive midfield profile, and it remains to be seen what fee Manchester City eventually agree to.0 Comments 0 Shares 162 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'This is the right one' - Rohl on leaving Rangers for SalzburgDanny Rohl worked as a coach under current Barcelona boss Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich [Getty Images]"Some people were asking why but I felt this is the right one now. I can confirm, it's a good move," says Danny Rohl. The 37-year-old is discussing his decision to leave Rangers and join Red Bull Salzburg in June. These days, his base as an immaculate office at the club's training ground in Taxham, part of Salzburg's suburbs. The towering Berchtesgaden Alps provide the backdrop as Rohl details his eventful 12 months, in which he went from crisis at Sheffield Wednesday to the relative calm of Salzburg via Glasgow. In eight months at Ibrox, Rohl nearly produced a stunning turnaround during a chaotic season, taking over when Rangers were sixth in the SPL after one win in eight games. He brought them back into title contention, only for four defeats in their final five games to leave them third. Rohl was expecting - and expected - to stay at Ibrox but a call about Salzburg's interest while on holiday in June changed his course again. It was unexpected but he has no regrets. "I was not prepared for this change in the summer," he tells BBC Sport."I was in Hawaii, the time difference was 12 hours and I was often on the main deck on the cruise around five or six in the morning. I had some calls and I thought about the situation. "I have all these situations in my mind. I saw the beautiful sea, I saw the sun and then you think: 'OK, what is the future?'"I spoke, of course, with Rangers. I was really transparent and open on how I feel, how I see it. On the other side there was Red Bull Salzburg, especially Marcus [Mann, sporting director] - he really gave me the feeling of what we can do here. "I said from the first day to both, if there's no agreement then we carry on, we move on because I have big respect to Rangers. It was also clear, our story was not finished."I saw a lot of opportunities, what we can do in the summer, what we should do but on the other side, I saw also a good opportunity to restart, to start from zero with a group of players with high quality." Derek McInnes - who took Hearts to the brink of the title only to lose out on the final day to Celtic - replaced Rohl. After Thursday's Europa League exit to Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok, McInnes has now failed to win his opening four games.Rohl, speaking before that defeat, says: "Consistency, this is the most important thing. The environment is really demanding."Everyone who goes there, it doesn't matter if it's a manager, a player, a staff member, you have to understand this club is demanding and this creates a lot of pressure on people to make the right decisions. "Nobody can prepare [for] this step. I cannot speak for the new manager but you can't prepare. You have to be there and if you are there, then you really feel what it means." Rohl is focused and settled in Austria, returning to Salzburg after starting his coaching career at RB Leipzig under Ralph Hassenhuttl, before following him to Southampton. He joins with Salzburg having failed to lift the Austrian Bundesliga title for the past three seasons - after winning the previous 10 in a row. They finished third last season.Rohl's move to Austria continues his history of bold career choices."This is the main part of my character, be brave. In the last three years I always pushed the limit," says Rohl, who describes saving Sheffield Wednesday from relegation in 2023-24 as a miracle. "I want to win titles and, after the season, I will measure myself on this result."When you take over, the main part is winning titles, the cup and the league and in the last few years we couldn't win this as a club, this is one big goal. "The second is of course developing young players."Lucas Gourna-Douath is the latest, the midfielder close to joining Hull, but a recent list underlines the quality of the production line at Taxham. Karim Adeyemi moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and joined Barcelona this summer while Erling Haaland's season at the club in 2019-20 gave him the platform to join Borussia Dortmund. Sadio Mane, Dayot Upamecano and Dominik Szoboszlai are all alumni. Former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Rohl adds: "Ten years ago we were the model for other clubs and now you see more and more on the market have this multi-club ownership and this is also now a competition for us."I want to win titles, develop young players, be attractive and I want to bring Salzburg back into the light in Europe."Theatre trips and anonymityThursday's Europa League comeback in Pafos - coming from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 and progress 4-3 on aggregate - ensured Salzburg reached the Europa League play-off round against Sweden's Mjallby. They go to WSG Tirol on Sunday having collected four points from their opening two matches - a win over Hartberg and a frustrating 1-1 draw at Wolfsberg, where Salzburg dominated."Nobody spoke directly about the eight changes or the reason why we didn't win," Rohl smiles. "We analysed the game, we had greater chances, and we really focused on the content and we were not looking for some headlines."The main focus is on the football."That stance allows Rohl more perspective and clarity. His family are still in Leipzig, just a few hours away, and he has just been to the theatre to watch Jedermann, a play by Austrian playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal - one of the centrepieces of Salzburg's festival which has been running for 106 years. The city allows Rohl to enjoy some anonymity and serenity after his whirlwind year, at least for now. "You can't compare, especially in Glasgow - it's all about football," said Rohl, who speaks with affection for Rangers and Wednesday. "Let's look just how many podcasts you have after every game. So many opinions. "Here you are a part of the city. You have loyal supporters but you will have not these [fan] handshakes in the city because this is not usual here."It's also enjoyable after three intense years. Ask me - hopefully - after three years here what I like more then I will tell you. But at the moment it's great to go through the city, to have dinner and you are a little undercover."0 Comments 0 Shares 172 Views 0 Reviews
