Florida basketball in NET top 5 with one regular-season game left
Florida basketball (24-6, 15-2) entered the top five in the NET rankings after beating the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday and held its position with another win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Tuesday.Florida started at No. 33 in the initial NET rankings at the end of November and slowly climbed into the top 10 by early February. Now the Gators are vying for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament after proving themselves as one of the most improved teams over the course of the season. Two of Florida's six losses have come against top-three programs, and three have come against top-eight programs.During the current 10-game win streak, Florida has won all but one contest (vs. Kentucky) by double digits, averaging a 23.2-point margin of victory. Six of those wins have come against Quadrant 1 opponents, leading to Florida's steady climb up the rankings. The Gators are the only SEC team ranked inside the top 15, with Vanderbilt being the next closest at No. 16. Alabama is right behind them at No. 17, and Tennessee and Arkansas control the Nos. 19 and 20 spots, respectively.Florida's final regular-season game comes on the road against No. 27 Kentucky, which is yet another Quadrant 1 opportunity for the Gators.Breaking down Floridas wins by QuadrantBefore going into Floridas resume, its important to understand how the quadrants are divided. Where a game is played has as much to do with the quadrant as the quality of the opponent. As the rankings change, so does the quality of the wins.Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353Quadrant 1 GamesFlorida is 11-5 in Quadrant 1 games. The Arizona Wildcats (14-2), Auburn Tigers (5-11) and Kansas Jayhawks (8-8) are the only other teams with 16 Quadrant 1 games played this season. Arizona holds the most Q1 wins on the year, followed by Duke (13-2), Michigan (11-1) and Florida.Non-conference Q1 losses came against No. 1 Duke,No. 3 Arizona and No. 8 UConn. All three are considered very good losses. Florida also lost to No. 42 TCU. The Gators' lone non-conference Q1 win came against No. 31 Miami at a neutral site (Jacksonville). The Hurricanes and Horned Frogs are both poised to hold Q1 status through their respective conference tournaments.Several of Florida's SEC games have come against Q1 opponents. The Missouri (No. 59) loss on the road remains in Quadrant 1, which is good for the Gators, but Auburn continues to move further from the top 30, dropping out of Q1 territory for games played at home. The Q1 conference wins came against No. 16 Vanderbilt (road), No. 17 Alabama (home), No. 19 Tennessee (home), No. 20 Arkansas (home), No. 27 Kentucky, No. 29 Georgia (both), No. 38 Texas (road), No. 43 Texas A&M (road) and No. 57 Oklahoma (road).Quadrant 2 GamesIn Quadrant 2 games, Florida is 4-1, with road wins at No. 90 Ole Miss and No. 110 South Carolina during conference play. The other Q2 wins came during the non-conference schedule against No. 75 Providence and No. 86 George Washington, both at a neutral site.Florida's lone Quadrant 2 loss came against No. 39 Auburn at home.Quadrant 3 and 4 gamesFlorida is 4-0 in Quadrant 3 games, with wins over No. 77 Florida State, No. 108 Mississippi State and No. 110 South Carolina, all at home. Iran player Sara Didar holds back tears responding to a war-related question at Women's Asian Cup
Sara Didar choked back tears as she shared the concerns of the Iranian soccer team for their families and loved ones at home amid the war while they're in Australia contesting the Womens Asian Cup.Obviously were all concerned and were sad at what has happened to Iran and our families in Iran, Didar said in comments translated into English during a news conference Wednesday on the eve of a Group A game against Australia."I really hope for our country to have good news ahead. And I hope that my country will be strongly alive. The 21-year-old striker was part of the squad that stood in silence as the Iran anthem played at the Gold Coast Stadium before their opening loss to South Korea on Monday. The squad and management arrived in Australia well before the strikes by Israel and the U.S. on Saturday that led to the broader conflict. Head coach Marziyeh Jafari and players declined to comment on the war or the death of the countrys Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during their first official news conference of the tournament on Sunday. On Wednesday, an Asian Football Confederation moderator asked reporters before the scheduled pre-match news conference to stick with football questions and refrain from asking about the war. When a question was posed, Didar and Jafari each expressed concerns about the people in Iran.Obviously we have so much concern regarding the health of our families and our loved ones and all other Iranian people inside our country, which we are fully disconnected with," Jafari said, highlighting the limited contact because of blackouts in Iran. But, here, we are coming to play football professionally and we will do our best to concentrate on our football and match ahead.A pocket of Iranian fans at Monday's game waved the red, green and white national colors and some pre-Islamic revolution flags, and chanted support for the team.Jafari and Didar said the team was happy to have the support of Iranian-Australians.We feel very good that we see many Iranians supporting us, it really encourages us and we really appreciate it," Didar said. "I know the stadium will be full tomorrow, and hope that we have a great atmosphere.Australia coach Joe Montemurro said he wanted his team and supporters to greet the Iranian squad with compassion. Thursday's game is expected to draw a capacity crowd at Gold Coast Stadium. It'll be only the second meeting between the two women's national teams, with Australia winning the previous match at Perth in 2023.We want to give them the best tournament possible in terms of giving them the experience of a lifetime," Montemurro said. "For us, its about just showing our human compassion, our respect and show them how beautiful we are as a country, and how beautiful we are as Australians.Australia, the 2010 Asian Cup champions and semifinalist at the 2023 World Cup it co-hosted with New Zealand, opened with a 1-0 win over Philippines and can secure a quarterfinal spot with a win over Iran. The Iranians are in Australia hoping to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, which means they have to finish in the top eight in the Asian Cup.___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald makes feeling clear on Jon Rahm after 'extorting players' claims
Luke Donald is hopeful that Jon Rahm will be part of his squad as the captain pursues a historic third consecutive Ryder Cup triumph in Ireland next year. The Spanish star remains embroiled in a disagreement with the DP World Tour regarding penalties imposed for his participation in LIV Golf competitions without securing the required permissions as a tour member.Donald has committed to leading Europe once more following September's triumph in New York. The captain's appointment for the 2027 contest at Adare Manor marks an unprecedented achievement, with Donald becoming the first European skipper to lead the team for three successive editions of the biennial competition.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayHis appeal process regarding the outstanding fines was subject to such lengthy delays that Rahm was ultimately permitted to feature in the European side's victory at Bethpage Black last September.Rahm is understood to owe in excess of 2million in penalties, yet he has refused to settle the outstanding amount. On Tuesday, the two-time major champion described the situation as "extortion".His stance contrasts sharply with fellow LIV competitors such as Tyrrell Hatton, who agreed to clear their fines and pledged to participate in additional DP World Tour events in exchange for conditional releases, permitting them to compete on the Saudi-backed circuit.Speaking on the situation, Donald said: "Its the first day on the job so I havent talked to him yet but obviously I will talk to Jon."I dont really want to comment as I know he has his own reasons but I look forward to catching up with him and I really hope he is available."Chief executive of the European Tour group, Guy Kinnings, said they had followed the rules in place and Rahms refusal left him with two options. He said: It is pretty straightforward: either he withdraws the appeal and settles fines, or he goes to the appeal process, and that is underway, and then go with whatever decision is made in that hearing."LATEST SPORT NEWSLuke Donald makes admission as Europe star keeps captaincy for 2027 Ryder CupJon Rahm accuses DP World Tour of 'extorting players' in scathing attack amid row with Rory McIlroyShane Lowry makes sad admission about his daughter after PGA Tour collapseFormer USA captains Walter Hagen and Ben Hogan led their team to four and three Ryder Cup wins respectively, but neither achieved the three in a row Donald is aiming for at Adare Manor in Ireland. The former world number one said he had weighed up the pros and cons and, with the support of his family and team-mates, he was ready to go again. He added: "I accomplished a great deal with Rome and New York and you obviously do question the possibility of losing if you go again."Winning and losing is not something you can control."Donald said: "You can give yourself an edge but you have those thoughts What if this doesnt go right and we are the (first) team to lose at home in 34 years does that taint anything?."But when you come to the pros there were many more than there were cons and ultimately that is why I am sitting here."The USA are hoping Tiger Woods will agree to serve as captain for the 2027 event, having turned down the opportunity last time out, but Donald would not be drawn on who his opposite number might be.He said: "It is a little bit hard to comment on something that hasnt happened yet. Tigers name was floated two years ago and Keegan ended up being captain so its hard to make those guesses. Tiger moves the needle in the game still. Whoever the captain is doesnt really change my role."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
