WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMLast Night in Baseball: Pirates (Yes, The Pirates) Sweep O's For 5th-Straight WinThere is always baseball happening almost too much baseball for one person to follow themselves. Don't worry, we're here to help you by figuring out what you missed but shouldn't have. Here are all the best moments from the weekend in Major League Baseball: Pirates win fifth-straight Are the Pirates good? Its a little too early for that question, given its still the first week of April, but Pittsburgh has been good so far and thats not nothing. The Pirates swept the visiting Orioles over the weekend, giving them five-straight victories and a 6-3 record on the season. Some of the newer Pirates did their part to show off, like free agent signing Ryan OHearn. OHearn has been mashing so far, batting .367/.459/.700 on the season, and drilled his third homer of the year on Sunday off of Orioles starter Chris Bassitt, a 402-foot shot on a 3-0 fastball that Bassitt left up in the zone. Konnor Griffin might not be new to the organization, but he did make his big-league debut on Friday in the Pirates home opener. The top prospect in the game and 2024 first-round pick didnt get much hitting done in his first three games, but the shortstop reminded the crowd that hes not just around for his bat. And then there is center fielder Oneil Cruz, who made some headlines on Opening Day for misplaying some balls, but hes been making up for that with his bat since. Cruz crushed a 91-mph pitch inside off of reliever Cade Povich, 415 feet to straightaway center, to put Pittsburgh up 8-1 on Sunday. The Orioles would score a second run and no more, with starting pitcher Braxton Ashcraft going six innings with just one run allowed while striking out eight. The right-hander didnt allow a walk and gave up just four hits, then the bullpen mostly shut Baltimore down the rest of the way for the W. Are the Orioles bad? Its too early to answer that question, too, but a 3-6 start is not going to make an already uphill battle in the AL East any easier. White Sox sweep Blue Jays Luckily for the Orioles, they werent the only team from their division to struggle this weekend. The Blue Jays have now lost four in a row thanks to the White Sox hitting them with the three-game sweep. Yes, the White Sox, losers of 102 games a year ago, getting out the brooms for the defending American League champions. Its early, yes, but those wins and losses are in the bank. Chicago won in extra innings on Friday in their home opener, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the 10th on a couple of singles and a throwing error to tie and walk it off. Then, on Saturday, the White Sox would win 6-3 following a three-run sixth inning that saw first baseman and NPB import Munetaka Murakami hit his fourth dinger of the season, which was followed by Colson Montgomerys second long ball of the year. Chicago used an opener for an inning before giving the ball to Anthony Kay for 4.1 innings, and the group combined to hold the Jays to three runs. The pitching was even better for the White Sox on Sunday, as they blanked Toronto, 3-0. Righty Davis Martin threw six scoreless with six strikeouts and two walks, limiting the Blue Jays to four hits, and the bullpen shut Toronto down the rest of the way. Helping out the pitching staff was some quality defense, like this grab from Luisangel Acuna. The White Sox have won three in a row and four on the season, which doesnt sound like all that much until you remember that Chicago won its fourth game last year on April 12, and in 2024 on April 26. At this rate the White Sox will win their fourth game of 2027 before they even play it. Jo Adell, take a bow You might have heard that Angels right fielder Jo Adell did something no one else has done since this info was tracked: on Saturday, he robbed three three! home runs in a single game. Even better, this ended up being a matchup that the Angels won 1-0 Adells performance is the reason Los Angeles got the W at all. The first robbery was just a great catch to keep Mariners backstop Cal Raleigh from going yard in a 0-0 game. The second, though, came in the top of the eighth inning with the Angels up 1-0. The bases were empty with first baseman Josh Naylor at the plate, but Sam Bachman gave up what looked like it was going to go over the right field wall until Adell was there to haul that one in, too. And then, in the ninth, with the Mariners trying to force extras or outright, reliever Jordan Romano came into the game to try to close the door on Seattle. He has been exceptionally homer-prone over the past two years, but apparently what he was missing was Adell out there to keep the ball from clearing the wall. Or, in the case of this catch, holding on to it even when itdoes clear the fence. What a grab. And what a day for Adell! The Angels would win, 1-0, and then for good measure downed the Mariners in 11 innings, 8-7, on Sunday to take the series, too. A Giancarlo Stanton steal? Giancarlo Stanton is known for one thing. Well, two things: enormous muscles, and hitting home runs with those muscles. His legs? Other than maybe also the muscle thing, not so much. Stanton did what no one expected on Sunday, though, stealing his first base since 2020, and against his former team, the Marlins. That stolen base from 2020 was Stantons first since 2017, or, to put it another way, back when Stanton was still on the Marlins. Its been awhile given the rate hes been working at, we might have seen the last steal of his career even if he ends up playing into his early 40s. Marlins big inning bests Yankees Unfortunately for the Yankees, you dont get extra credit for the level of surprise a stolen base has. New York was up 4-2 on the Marlins through five innings, but then Miami narrowed that gap to a run in the sixth, before exploding for four more runs in the eighth. The inning started with DH Agustin Ramirez striking out, but then center fielder Jakob Marsee and shortstop Otto Lopez drew back-to-back walks against different pitchers. Griffin Conine came in to pinch-hit, and was hit by a pitch out of the hand of Jake Bird, loading the bases for another pinch-hitter, Graham Pauley. Pauley delivered on a double to right, scoring Marsee and Lopez to put Miami up 5-4. Ryan Yarbrough came on in relief of Bird, but things didnt go any better for the lefty. He gave up a two-run single to the first batter he faced, second baseman Xavier Edwards, and then Edwards stole second. Yarbrough managed to get the next two batters, however, but the damage was done. New York would rally to put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Anthony Bender, but the Yankees needed three Miami won the game to avoid the sweep, and stick in first place in the NL East in the process. A slip and a catch This probably would have been a routine catch if TJ Friedl didnt slip, but the Reds left fielder failed to keep his footing. That ended up making it an impressive grab, though, since Friedl managed to control the rest of his body and stick with making the play despite the fact that he got all tripped up on the way to making it. No credit for slipping, sure, but for making sure the end result was the same? Friedl earned that one. Its not spring everywhere There have been some high spring temperatures across the country in March and early April, but they were nowhere to be found in Minnesota on Saturday. And not only was it cold, but it was cold enough for snow! A beautiful bunt as is, but against the backdrop of snow? Baseball is something. The freezing cold weather didnt impact the Rays at all, as they ended up winning 7-1. Hey, its not like the Twins are used to playing in the snow, either. Padres come back against Red Sox The Padres and Red Sox had a back-and-forth affair in the rubber game of their three-game set, with Boston going up early courtesy a four-run third inning, punctuated by this Masataka Yoshida RBI double. The Padres would answer right back, however: San Diego scored three runs in both the fourth and the fifth to go up 6-4, with center fielder Jackson Merrill and first baseman Nick Castellanos both hitting RBI singles before third baseman Manny Machado hit a 3-run blast into the Green Monster seats to give the Padres the lead. In the seventh, Yoshida had yet another big double, this time a two-run two-bagger to right, to tie the game up at 6-6. The tie was short-lived, however, as Merrill hit it where the camera couldnt follow to left, over the monster, and the Padres were once again up. Right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. would add an insurance run via sac fly in the ninth, but it proved unnecessary, as closer Mason Miller was up to the task of sitting the Red Sox down. Miller not only struck out the side, but took them down in order, too. Miller got shortstop Trevor Story on three consecutive pitches, all sliders, then fooled both left fielder Jarren Duran and Millers own backstop, Freddy Fermin, with a slider that followed a 101-mph fastball. Fermin got the throw to first for the second K, though, and then first baseman Willson Contreras went down swinging, too, with Miller going 100, 101 and then back to the slider for the swing-and-miss. Dubon 1, Perdomos Glove 0 Mauricio Dubon broke Geraldo Perdomos glove with this shot to left field on Saturday, in a little bit of shortstop-vs.-shortstop action. Dubon hit it to short but elevated, and Perdomo dove, and had it go right through his glove to left. Not "through" as in Perdomo missed, but as in the ball straight-up wentthrough the glove. Check that slow-motion replay. The Diamondbacks ended up winning, but Perdomo is down a glove. Poor glove. Rookers walk-off shot What a game between the Astros and Athletics in Sacramento on Sunday. The As ended up winning 12-10, but that doesnt tell the half of it. It took until the fifth inning for either team to score, when DH Yordan Alvarez launched his fourth homer of the season to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. Right fielder Cam Smith would follow with an RBI single before the inning ended, but the As would then answer with five runs in the bottom of the frame, with DH Brent Rooker scoring a sac fly to give the Athletics a 5-3 lead. In the seventh, first baseman Christian Walker tied things back up 5-5 with a two-run shot off of reliever J.T. Ginn. Rooker would respond immediately, though, smashing the 100th home run of his career to put the As up 7-5. The back-and-forth would continue, with the two teams tied 9-9 in the ninth following a four-run eighth by Houston. It could have ended right in the bottom of the ninth as the As rallied, but second baseman Jose Altuve made sure that didnt happen with this incredible play, in which he caught second baseman Jeff McNeil running home after bringing in a grounder off the bat of catcher Shea Langeliers. The Astros would then take the lead in the top of the 10th, on an RBI single by third baseman Carlos Correa, but Rooker would come to the rescue once more. With two on in the bottom of the 10th, Rooker smashed another dinger, this one a walk-off shot. The As won the series, and while it hasnt been a great start to the season for them, taking two of three from a division rival and via an extra-innings walk-off is a good way to change that course. Ohtani goes deep It took until Friday for Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani to hit his first home run of the season, but waiting for the second didnt take nearly as long. Ohtani put the Dodgers on the board in the top of the third with a solo shot, in a game th0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Hitter matchups to exploit and stream in Week 3, based on advanced statsIn last weeks article, we introduced the following adjusted scores as a way to quantify team pitching matchups for opposing hitters. We used several team-level advanced metrics to weigh and adjust scores. For fun, we included the first week of 2026. However, the 2026 numbers arent weighted as much, compared to the significantly larger 2025 sample, as a way to show any early-season differences.A lower adjusted score indicates the hitting matchup should be more favorable against those team pitchers. The opposite is true, where a higher adjusted score suggests teams facing these pitchers may face challenges in their upcoming matchups. We used conditional formatting to indicate that the projected easier matchups should be green and the tougher matchups should be shaded red.The visual below shows the top 12 easiest projected matchups for hitters heading into Week 3.Easiest adjusted hitter matchups for Week 3. (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)Another way to look at the visual above is that these pitchers tend to be the worst pitching staffs. The worst teams include the Rockies, Nationals, White Sox, Angels and Cardinals. However, its worth highlighting the significant 2026 differences (small-sample alert!) for Marlins starting pitchers across the board. The underlying metrics for Sandy Alcantara and Eury Prez have been juicy, though dont sleep on Janson Junk in the early 2026 sample. The visual below shows the top 12 toughest projected matchups for hitters heading into Week 3.Hardest adjusted hitting matchups for Week 3. (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)Meanwhile, the most challenging team pitchers to face includethe Astros, Brewers, Dodgers, Yankees and Mariners. In the small 2026 sample, weve seen the Brewers, Yankees and Mariners have their K-BB% improve compared to 2025. However, hopefully, the above metrics are just early-season noise for the Rays and Reds.Well look at a few Week 3 hitter matchups to monitor. Additionally, well highlight several hitters to consider adding based on their matchups, skills and playing time.Seven-Game Slates in Week 3Reds (4 at MIA, 3 vs. LAA)Most of the lineup doesnt platoon, except for Will Benson. We discussed how Marlins starting pitchers have been performing better early in 2026, so it might be slightly more challenging for Reds hitters. However, only Jos Soriano somewhat scares us when facing Angels starting pitchers.Rockies (3 vs. HOU, 4 at SD)Three games at home and four on the road for Rockies hitters. They have the second-most stolen bases in the early 2026 sample, so maybe fantasy managers can stream stolen bases from Rockies hitters.White Sox (3 vs. BAL, 4 at KC)There will be volume in favor of White Sox hitters. However, theyll face Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Kris Bubic and Cole Ragans, making it somewhat of a mixed bag from a matchup standpoint.Tigers (4 at MIN, 3 vs. MIA)They project to face seven right-handed pitchers in Week 3. That should favor Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenter as strong-side platoon options. Keith and Carpenter should be viable hitter options to start in most formats.Royals (3 at CLE, 4 vs. CWS)In the first half of the week, Kansas City faces Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams and Joey Cantillo. However, the second half of Week 3 looks profitable with Anthony Kay, Davis Martin, Erick Fedde and Shane Smith. With right-handed pitchers projected in five out of seven games, keep an eye on Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel as strong-side platoon options.Marlins (4 vs. CIN, 3 at DET)Be cautious with Liam Hicks and playing time because of the platoon concerns. They project to face a Reds starting rotation with three lefties in four games and one lefty (Tarik Skubal) in the final three games against Detroit.Twins (4 vs. DET, 3 at TOR)Minnesota faces right-handed pitchers in four out of seven games, especially early in the week against Skubal and Framber Valdez. Matt Wallner has been earning chances against left-handed pitchers in 2026, with Kody Clemens and Trevor Larnach losing plate appearances against lefties.Padres (3 at PIT, 4 vs. COL)The Padres lineup to face right-handed pitchers in all seven games in Week 3. Gavin Sheets remains the only strict strong-side platoon option. Sheets has a 103 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers with a 54 wRC+ against lefties in his career.Three Week 3 Strong-Side Platoons to MonitorDominic Canzone, 12% Rostered (3 at TEX, 3 vs. HOU)We mentioned last week that Dominic Canzone remains a strong-side platoon option. Canzone projects to face five right-handed pitchers out of six games in Week 3. The Mariners have been using a strict platoon for Canzone in the early set of games. Canzone has shown better bat speed (74.6 mph) in 2026, supported by a 52% fast swing rate (percentage of swings at 75 mph or faster). He should be a strong source of power, especially in weekly matchups where he projects to face plenty of right-handed pitchers.Dominic Canzone bat speed analysis. (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)Colt Keith, 20% Rostered (4 at MIN, 3 vs. MIA)Colt Keith has been hitting atop the lineup for the Tigers, projecting as a strong-side platoon option. They project to face all right-handed pitchers across their seven game slate. Keith has been a solid source of batting average, with a career .261 BA. However, Keiths current .556 BABIP has inflated his .417 BA. Keith showed a 73.6 mph bat speed in 2026, potentially hitting for more power, paired with a strong batting average floor. Fantasy managers should stream Keith in medium and deeper formats.Colt Keith 15-game rolling average and BABIP. (Photo by Corbin Young/FanGraphs)Evan Carter, 5% Rostered (3 vs. SEA, 3 at LAD)Defense is Evan Carters calling card, but theres some power and speed in his fantasy profile. Carter projects as a strong-side platoon option, and the Rangers face six right-handed pitchers in Week 3. Theoretically, Carter can provide double-digit home runs and 15-20 stolen bases across an entire season, when healthy. He might benefit from being more aggressive, with a 34% swing percentage, 12 percentage points below the league average. Carters bat speed hasnt shifted significantly (within 1 mph), and the individual matchups will be tough, especially early in the week against Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Bryan Woo.Still, hes worth a stream thanks to playing time and potential counting stats.Deep League Waiver Wire AddsJordan Walker, 10% Rostered (3 at WSH, 3 vs. BOS)If youve been into Jordan Walker in the past, then youre thinking, Never wrong, always early. Walker has been making more contact (74.1%), over four percentage points above his career norm. He went to Driveline Baseball during the offseason, leading to a swing change. Walkers batting stance starts over six inches closer in 2026, compared to 2025.Hitters with a narrower stance by 5 inches or more in 2026. (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)He also had a slightly more closed swing (10 degrees open). That coincides with Walkers ideal attack angle (percentage of swings between 5 and 20 degrees), up over 17 points in 2026. Walker made actionable changes that are supported by the advanced swing metrics and coincided with positive outcomes. He should be rostered in most 12-team leagues, with a borderline addition in shallower formats.Kyle Isbel, 12% Rostered (3 at CLE, 4 vs. CHW)A couple of home runs and stolen bases in a week will cause a players roster percentage to rise like Kyle Isbels. He tends to be a strong defender, potentially helping to keep his bat in the lineup. Isbels .563 BABIP has been fueling the .478 batting average. However, Isbels power metrics have been slightly better, given his 71.4 mph bat speed and .291 expected batting average (xBA), which includes the hard-hit metrics. Isbel projects to face right-handed hitters in five out of seven games in Week 3, so we might want to ride the wave in leagues with five outfielders.Josh Bell, 5% Rostered (4 vs. DET, 3 at TOR)Josh Bell has played on his seventh team over the past five seasons (2022-2026), including Washington for two years. He currently plays every day for a mediocre Twins lineup. After showing strong bat speed (73.1 mph) in 2025, it dipped to 71.2 mph in 2026. Expect Bells pull and flyball rates at 55-60% for each to regress toward the career norms in the early sample, given his groundball-heavy profile (49%). Volume should be in Bells favor for Week 3.Josh Bell's 15-game rolling average on pull and groundball percentage. (Photo by Corbin Young/FanGraphs)Cam Smith, 5% Rostered (3 at COL, 3 at SEA)Playing time was a concern for Cam Smith before the season started. However, Smith has solidified himself as the everyday right fielder for the Astros. Smith already flashed high-end bat speed (74.5 mph) with a 46.9% fast swing rate in 2025. In the early 2026 sample, Smiths bat speed skyrocketed to 77.5 mph with a 73.8% fast swing rate. Hopefully, Smiths plate discipline change is fluky because his contact rate fell to 65-66% with a high chase rate (39.1%). The tools are loud for Smith, and we should see a multi-homer week coming soon.Cam Smith rolling bat speed/swings. (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)TJ Rumfield, 5% Rostered (3 vs. HOU, 4 at SD)The Rockies went six straight games to begin the season on the road, so theres a good chance well see an adjustment period early in the 2026 season. Rumfields .471 BABIP is fueling the .360 batting average in the early 2026 sample. In the minors, Rumfield showed strong contact rates (81-83%), but its been awful at 69.8% in 2026. That suggests Rumfields batting average and results could be more luck-based than supported by skill. He seems to have mediocre power and athleticism, making it a fun but risky profile, but if theres one home ballpark that boosts BABIP, its in Colorado. Ride the heat wave for Rumfield as a source of batting average.0 Comments 0 Shares 23 Views 0 Reviews
