Michigan muscles its way to program's 2nd national title, beating stubborn UConn 69-63
Michigan's new Fab Five threw style points out the door and brought home a prize not even the school's most famous team could capture. The five fabulous transfers who make up coach Dusty May's starting lineup got down and dirty with the rest of the Wolverines coming out with the national title trophy Monday night after muscling their way to a 69-63 victory over stingy, stubborn UConn.Michigan only made two 3-pointers all night. The Final Four's most outstanding player, Elliot Cadeau, led the Wolverines with 19 points, including the teams first 3, which came 7:04 into the second half. The second 3, from freshman Trey McKenney, came with 1:50 left and felt like a dagger, giving May's team which had scored 90 points in five straight March Madness games leading to the final a nine-point lead.To no ones surprise, UConn fought to the finish. Solo Ball banked in a 3 to cut the deficit to four with 37 seconds left and after two missed free throws, UConns Alex Karaban (17 points) barely grazed the rim on a 3 that wouldve cut the deficit to one with 17 seconds left. Not until McKenney sank two free throws to bring Michigans shooting from the line to 25 for 28 for the night could the Wolverines (37-3) kick off the celebration for the programs second title the other coming in 1989, a few years before the Fab Five arrived and made two trips to the championship game, but never won a title.HAIL TO VICTORS!!!! Jalen Rose, one of the Fab Five stars, posted on social media. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!It was the first men's hoops title for the Big Ten since Michigan State in 2000. Including UCLA's win in the women's NCAA Tournament Sunday, the conference swept the football (Indiana) and basketball titles this year.Michigan won this one with defense, holding UConn to 30.9% shooting the fourth straight game the Wolverines held their opponent to a season-low field-goal percentage. These guys have done it all year, May said. When one side of the ball has let us down, the other side has picked it up. Our togetherness defensively ultimately got us over the hump.Michigan had to fight for everything. The Wolverines missed their first 11 shots from 3, finished 2 for 15 beyond the arc and won despite the struggles of their best player, Yaxel Lendeborg. Ailing with a hurt knee and foot that kept him from elevating, the graduate transfer from UAB finished with 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting. If youd told me we would shoot it this poorly and (be) dominated on the glass and still find a way to win, I dont know if I would have believed you, May said. This team just found a way all season. The two 3-pointers were tied for second fewest by a winning team in the title game, according to Sportradar. Michigan also got outrebounded 22-12 on the offensive glass by a UConn team that would not go away. How are you disappointed at all in your group? UConn coach Dan Hurley said. These guys have 22 offensive rebounds versus that group of mon-stars out there. So, proud of the guys.Truth be told, it wasnt anyones prettiest night.UConns hopes of becoming the first team since John Woodens UCLA dynasty to win three titles in four seasons came up short, done in by massive foul trouble and its own terrible shooting.Hurleys team missed its first 11 shots from 3 in the second half.Braylon Mullins, the hero of the Duke win that put UConn in the Final Four, finished 4 of 17, though he made a pair of late 3s that kept the game in reach. Tarris Reed Jr., the transfer from Michigan, finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds but never took control.UConn (34-6) covered the 6 1/2-point spread, and Hurley kept his players out on the court to watch the podium get set up for the victors.About the only consolation: The Huskies clogged things up, slowed things down and made Michigan beat them at their game. Its complicated, because everyones crushed, Hurley said. We came here to be out there, doing what those guys are doing right now.Nobody did it quite like the Wolverines this year. They came into the title game shooting freely and winning big. In each of their five tournament games, they broke 90 and won by 13 or more.In this one, they didnt hit 70 and had to battle to the buzzer. It was ugly the opposite of an instant classic. And yet, in almost every way, it was the prettiest of them all for Michigan the one that gives the school what the Fab Five couldnt manage namely, a natty.Nobody cared about stats the whole season, Cadeau said. Nobody cared about nothing but winning. Im just glad to be part of that.Style points aside, this was a championship built from outside the best team money could buy.All five Wolverines starters played college ball elsewhere, and all but Nimari Burnett came to Ann Arbor this season. Thats a product of the transfer portal that May has shown no reluctance to use since he arrived from Florida Atlantic two seasons ago.His ability to form a makeshift group into a winner shows the value of a coach and a culture. They might be still calling us mercenaries but were the hardest-working team, Lendenborg said. Were the best in college basketball and well be one of the greatest ever.Pretty much everyone in the maize and blue would second that.Go BLUE. champions!!! Respect- Love! was the social media post from another Fab Five icon, Chris Webber.___AP March Madness bracket: https://apnews.com/hub/ncaa-mens-bracket and coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/march-madness

EFL side promoted to Championship after 65 years and become first English team to go up following Easter win
Lincoln City have clinched their place in the Championship for the first time in 65 years following a thrilling 2-1 triumph at Reading on Easter Monday.Jack Moylan's strike in the 96th minute proved the decisive moment, sparking jubilant scenes among the travelling supporters at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. The victory stretches Michael Skubala's side's remarkable unbeaten sequence to 24 matches. The Imps have not tasted defeat since November 22 last year.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayLincoln became the first club in the English Football League to secure promotion this campaign, with five fixtures still remaining. The result establishes an insurmountable 19-point advantage over Bradford City in third, whilst Cardiff City trail by 12 points in second.Ryan One handed the visitors the perfect start in the fifth minute, nodding home from a set-piece to quieten the home faithful.Lincoln controlled proceedings throughout much of the opening period, with their resolute defensive organisation frustrating Reading's attempts to find a way through. The hosts mounted sustained pressure after the interval but found the Imps' backline difficult to penetrate.Deep into added time, Lewis Wing appeared to have salvaged a point for Reading with a superb free-kick conversion, levelling the scores at 1-1.Yet the drama had one final twist. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Moylan fired home from close range to restore Lincoln's advantage and confirm their historic achievement.LATEST SPORT NEWSMichael Owen gives Arne Slot sack verdict with Liverpool in crisis after Man City FA Cup defeatGary Lineker explains 'signal of panic' after Arsenal's nightmare FA Cup exit to SouthamptonNon-league football team sign Man Utd icon who won two Premier League titlesMoylan, speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, expressed the magnitude of the moment: "I had dreamt about this all week - I knew when I came on I had a chance and this is something I have given my whole life up for."The match-winner emphasised the collective effort behind the success: "I have got the goal but this is 42 games of graft, these are best team-mates in the world and the best group in the world and it is such a good place to be at the moment."Head coach Skubala said: "It is an unbelievable feeling now. The lads have been excellent all season, and to get the job done today, to get promoted on Easter Monday, just epitomises our season."Lincoln's ascent represents one of English football's most extraordinary transformations in recent years. Just nine years ago, the club was competing in the National League after dropping out of the Football League in 2011.Their journey back has included three promotions, a memorable FA Cup quarter-final appearance as a non-league outfit, and an EFL Trophy victory at Wembley. The Imps had a dominant season, scoring 77 goals, the division's highest tally, and merely 35 conceded, the fewest in League One.With promotion secured, attention now shifts to claiming the title. Skubala added: "We want to win the title, the lads have said that they definitely want to win it."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

Archaeologists find 2,100-year-old bullet that sent 'sarcastic' message to enemy forces
Archaeologists have uncovered a 2,100-year-old sling bullet in Israel inscribed with a pointed message aimed at enemy forces. The scientists found the bullet in a necropolis area along an ancient road at Hippos, once a prominent bishop's seat during the Byzantine era. The city was known as Susita during the Hellenistic period, which lasted from 323 B.C. to about 31 B.C.The projectile, which officials date to the second century B.C., was carved with the Greek word "Learn," according to a press release obtained by Fox News Digital.COIN USED AS BUS FARE TURNS OUT TO BE 2,000-YEAR-OLD RELIC, ITS JOURNEY STILL A MYSTERYA picture of the ancient, oval-shaped lead sling bullet shows faint traces of the Greek script.Michael Eisenberg, a University of Haifa archaeologist who recently published his findings in the journal PEQ along with colleague Arleta Kowalewska, believes the phrase was a "sarcastic" taunt, he said."At Hippos alone, 69 such projectiles have been identified so far, but this is the first in the world to bear the inscription 'Learn,'" Eisenberg said, per the March release."This represents local sarcastic humor on the part of the city's defenders, who wished to teach their enemies a lesson with a wink: Learn your lesson!"The artifact is roughly 3.2 centimeters long and 1.95 centimeters wide, weighing 38 grams.TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZExcavators observed signs of impact damage on the projectile and believe it once weighed 45 grams. The projectile was likely "fired by the citys defenders from the city walls toward the enemy advancing to besiege the city," officials said.Lead bullets were considered a cheap but lethal form of ammunition at the time."Sling bullets were produced by casting lead in stone molds in a relatively simple process that could be carried out even during a military campaign," the release noted.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTEROfficials said that "many projectiles were decorated with the name of a military commander, the name of a city, sarcastic humor similar to Catch!' or symbols intended to imbue them with power, such as a trident, lightning bolt or scorpion."The artifact represents an unusual and unprecedented find, said Eisenberg."To find a sling bullet with an inscription is very rare; to find this Greek word on a sling bullet is the first time in the world," Eisenberg told Fox News Digital."We know of similar mocking or sarcastic humor directed at the enemy, but this specific example was unknown and reveals the humorous local trend among the Hellenistic defenders of Hippos."CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIESHe also noted the significance of where it was found, which strongly suggests it was fired during a siege."The bullet's location near the ancient main road below the city's fortifications, in addition to the impact mark on the bullet, supplies a colorful reconstruction of the defenders shooting the bullet toward the besieging forces advancing towards the city," Eisenberg said. The discovery adds to a growing list of major archaeological finds at Hippos.Excavations unearthed a 1,600-year-old Christian care center for the elderly at Hippos last year, possibly the world's oldest nursing home. Also at Hippos, archaeologists found a trove of ancient jewelry and gold coins last year, thanks to metal detectors.
