Scribers used in machining are not the same as the general-purpose marking tools found in home improvement stores. A machinist's scriber has a hardened, precision-ground tip fine enough to produce a line width measured in thousandths of an inch. The tip material matters: hardened high-speed steel scribers work well on soft metals including aluminum, brass, and mild steel. Carbide-tipped scribers scratch through the hardened surfaces of heat-treated steel, stainless steel, and other hard materials that would dull an HSS tip quickly. Types of Scribers in the Buyohlic Range Straight scribers are the most basic and most used type. A straight rod with a sharpened point at one or both ends, held in the hand and used to draw lines against a rule, square, or template. Double-ended scribers provide two tip geometries: a straight point at one end and an offset or angled point at the other. The angled end allows scribing in locations where the straight end cannot reach, such as inside a pocket or at a recessed surface. Double-ended scribers eliminate the need to carry two separate tools for different scribing orientations.
