Outboard propellers are critical components of boat propulsion systems, directly affecting speed, fuel efficiency, and overall handling. Choosing the right propeller depends on the type of boat, engine, and intended use. Outboard propellers vary in several key ways, including material, blade number, pitch, and diameter.

Materials are a primary factor in propeller selection. Common options include aluminum, stainless steel, and composite materials. Aluminum propellers are lightweight, affordable, and suitable for most recreational boats. Stainless steel propellers are stronger, more durable, and provide higher performance, particularly at high speeds, making them ideal for racing boats or heavy-duty applications. Composite propellers are corrosion-resistant and can absorb minor impacts without permanent damage.

Blade number influences thrust and efficiency. Standard outboard propellers have three blades, offering a balance between speed and maneuverability. Four-blade propellers provide improved acceleration and better handling in rough water or when carrying heavy loads. Five-blade propellers maximize smoothness and grip, making them suitable for high-performance boats or water sports.

Pitch and diameter are crucial performance parameters. Pitch refers to the distance the propeller would move in one revolution if it moved through a solid medium. Higher-pitch propellers increase top speed but reduce low-speed acceleration, while lower-pitch propellers improve acceleration and load-carrying capacity. Diameter affects the amount of water moved; larger diameters generate more thrust, especially for heavy boats, while smaller diameters favor speed and efficiency in lighter boats.

Other variations include cupped propellers, which have bent blade edges to improve grip and reduce ventilation, and hub designs, which can be standard, resilient, or high-performance, affecting durability and shock absorption.
