Qatar's Diamond League track meet put back from May to June amid ongoing uncertainty
The Diamond League track meet in Qatar has been postponed from next month to June, should conditions allow, amid ongoing uncertainty caused by the conflict in the Middle East. The Doha event had been set to open the season for track's elite series on May 8, as it typically has in recent years, but the postponement means Shanghai's meet on May 16 starts the series instead. In recent weeks, the Diamond League has been monitoring the situation in Doha, working in close coordination with meeting organizers, Qatari authorities and other stakeholders, the Diamond League said in a statement on Wednesday, hours after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran, the United States and Israel. In the interests of athlete and spectator safety, a decision has now been taken to postpone the meeting. Should conditions allow, it will now be held on June 19.The change of date also means a change of venue. Temperatures in Qatar in June are typically higher, so the event moves to the Khalifa International Stadium, which is fitted with large cooling systems around the arena that were used when it hosted the 2019 world track and field championships.Qatar has become a key host nation for global sports events in recent years and has had to postpone or cancel high-profile competitions since the United States and Israel began strikes on Iran in February. The Finalissima soccer game between Argentina and Spain, which was due to be played in Qatar, was canceled last month and Qatar's motorcycle Grand Prix was rescheduled to November. Elsewhere in the region, Formula 1 races set for April in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been called off. ___AP sports: https://apnews.com/sports

World Cup hero attacked by bystanders and arrested in shocking footage
Christian Lara, the former Ecuador midfielder who represented his nation at the 2006 World Cup, was detained and set upon by furious members of the public following an alleged armed robbery attempt in the Ecuadorian capital earlier today.Television footage broadcast nationally captured the 45-year-old being struck repeatedly by onlookers whilst in handcuffs outside an electronics store in Quito.Armed officers were compelled to intervene and protect the ex-international, known by his nickname "Diablito" or "Little Devil", before escorting him into a police vehicle. The incident unfolded in the La Magdalena district after a reported hold-up at the premises.Police chief Pablo Lastra confirmed that authorities had apprehended four individuals in connection with the attempted heist at a technology retailer called Tecnomega."Officers responded to an emergency call and thanks to the quick response, managed to foil the crime at the store called Tecnomega," Lastra stated.According to the police chief, approximately six armed suspects entered the premises with the apparent intention of carrying out the robbery.A gunfight erupted between officers and the alleged criminals during the failed raid.Law enforcement subsequently recovered three weapons, among them a home-made mini-rifle, along with ammunition and various electronic goods from the scene.Lara was discovered seated behind the wheel of what police described as a getaway vehicle positioned outside the targeted shop.Officers apprehended him in the driver's seat before marching him in restraints to a waiting patrol car, as captured in the arrest footage. The police chief confirmed the former footballer was among those held, adding that public prosecutors would now determine whether formal charges would be brought.Three other suspects were identified locally as Luis Alberto Mera Martinez, Wilter Ramn Cedeno Marciklo and Medina Lombeida Jose Eduardo.Notably, Lara is the sole detainee without any previous criminal convictions, according to police records. The retired midfielder earned 28 caps for Ecuador between his international debut in 2001 and his final appearance against Chile in 2009.
