Getting back to No. 1 means a lot for me.Four-time Grand Slam champion Sinner met seven-time major winner Alcaraz in their ninth final in what is often called the Sincaraz rivalry.Sinner trimmed Alcarazs head-to-head lead to 10-7 in clinching his 27th career title overall and his first Masters title on clay. The 24-year-old Italian will return to No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday.Sinner rallied from 3-1 down in the second set amid blustery conditions at the Monte Carlo Country Club and served out the match, clinching it on his first match point when Alcaraz returned a forehand long. It was a bit windy, a bit breezy. Different conditions from what the tournament has brought," Sinner said. "I am very happy to win a big title on this surface, I havent done it before and it means a lot to me.Alcaraz had won his last 17 matches on clay but struggled Sunday with 45 unforced errors. However, he praised Sinner. It is impressive what you are achieving right now, Alcaraz said. "Congratulations for everything.Sinner dropped to his knees after Alcaraz's shot landed out and then jogged over to celebrate with his box.I felt a bit tired, so I tried to keep the right mentality, Sinner said. "Having this trophy means a lot to me.It was Sinner's third title of the year after sweeping Indian Wells and Miami also winning those finals in straight sets to become only the fourth man to reach the final at the first three Masters of the season. Sinner joined tennis great Novak Djokovic (in 2015) as the only one to win the first three Masters tournaments.Alcarazs two titles this year include the Australian Open, where the 22-year-old Spaniard became the youngest man to win all four tennis majors. He produced a stunning comeback to beat Sinner in last year's French Open final, then lost the Wimbledon final to Sinner before beating him again in the U.S. Open final. ___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis0 Commentaires 0 Parts 42 Vue 0 Aperçu -
WWW.CLICK2HOUSTON.COMPhil Garner, who guided Houston Astros to historic first World Series trip, dies at 76Phil Garner, the former Houston Astros manager who guided the franchise to its first World Series appearance in 2005, has died at 76, according to a statement from his family.MLB reported Saturday that Garner died on April 11 after a more than two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, his family said. They said he died peacefully, surrounded by family. In Houston, Garner is most closely tied to a turning-point era: he took over as manager at midseason in 2004 and the Astros surged into the postseason, setting the stage for the clubs breakthrough run the following year. In 2005, Houston rallied from a difficult start, reached the playoffs again, and won the National League pennant before falling to the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. Before managing, Garner built a 16-year major league playing career defined by versatility and edgetraits that earned him the nickname Scrap Iron. A three-time All-Star, he played for the Oakland As, Pittsburgh Pirates, Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1973 to 1988, and was part of Pittsburghs 1979 World Series championship team.Born April 30, 1949, in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Garner starred at the University of Tennessee and later had his No. 18 jersey retired by the Volunteers.Garner also managed the Milwaukee Brewers and Detroit Tigers, finishing with a 985-1,054 managerial record. He is survived by his wife, Carol, their children Eric, Ty and Bethany, and six grandchildren.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 41 Vue 0 Aperçu -
WWW.GBNEWS.COMJannik Sinner takes special title off Carlos Alcaraz after beating him to win Monte Carlo MastersJannik Sinner has recaptured the world number one ranking after defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters final this afternoon. The Italian triumphed over his Spanish rival in a compelling encounter lasting two hours and fifteen minutes, contested in blustery conditions on the Riviera clay. This marks the fourth occasion the top spot has changed hands between these two dominant forces over the past two years, with no other player threatening their supremacy.Sinner will officially return to the summit when the rankings update on Monday, having last held the position in November.Sinner's triumph represents a remarkable feat of consistency, as he becomes only the third man in history to claim four successive ATP 1000 titles, joining the illustrious company of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The 24-year-old has now strung together seventeen consecutive victories. His Monte Carlo crown follows triumphs in Paris at the close of last season, plus Indian Wells and Miami in recent weeks.Indeed, Sinner became the first player ever to complete the Sunshine Double without surrendering a single set.He is also the first man since Djokovic in 2015 to secure the opening three Masters 1000 titles of a calendar year.Despite the intensity of their rivalry, the pair shared a warm moment at the net following the conclusion of play.Alcaraz, who had held a break advantage in both sets before losing the final five games, acknowledged his opponent's remarkable versatility."Hard court, grass, clay court. Man, next time," the Spaniard grinned whilst embracing the newly-crowned champion."That was a pleasure," Sinner responded. The defending champion added: "Great job man, great stuff, congrats."Sinner then rushed to celebrate with his coaching team, having secured his first significant clay court title just a fortnight after his Miami Open success.Sinner expressed his delight at finally capturing a major title on the red dirt."I don't know where to start," he said immediately after the final. "Honestly, we came here just trying to get as many matches as possible, having good feedback before other big tournaments coming up."The Italian acknowledged the challenging conditions, noting the wind had been stronger than during earlier rounds."The result is amazing. Getting back to No. 1 means a lot to me," he added. "At the same time, as I always say, the ranking is secondary, and I'm very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven't done it before, so it means a lot to me."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter0 Commentaires 0 Parts 48 Vue 0 Aperçu -
