Zach McKinstry injury update: Tigers third baseman 'not moving around great'
Detroit Tigers utilityman Zach McKinstry remains sore following his exit from Wednesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals, manager AJ Hinch said Thursday.McKinstry was removed from the game before the eighth inning of Wednesday's 2-1 win, after he got tripped by Royals base runner Jac Caglianone in what was the final out of the seventh inning. Earlier in the game, McKinstry had a collision in the field, and was a bit banged up on a head first slide into home.He was diagnosed with a bruised hip, and he was scheduled for an off day Thursday anyway, with Royals left-hander Kris Bubic scheduled to start."He's pretty banged up," Hinch said Thursday. "We're going to continue to get a look at him even further."He's not moving around great today."With McKinstry out, Wenceel Perez came into the game to play center field, Javier Bez moved to shortstop, and Kevin McGonigle moved to third base. Perez ended up hitting the winning homer in the eighth inning.McGonigle was in the starting lineup Thursday at third base, the rookie's 18th start in 19 games this year.On deck: Red Sox Series: Four games, Friday-Monday, Fenway Park, Boston First pitch: 7:15 Friday, 4:10 Saturday, 1:35 Sunday, 11:10 a.m. Monday TV/radio: Friday on Apple TV, Saturday-Monday on Detroit SportsNet; all four games on 97.1 Series probables: Friday RHP Casey Mize (1-1, 3.94) vs. LHP Ranger Suarez (1-1, 5.02); Saturday LHP Tarik Skubal (2-2, 2.22) vs. RHP Brayan Bello (1-1, 6.14); Sunday LHP Framber Valdez (1-1, 3.75) vs. LHP Garrett Crochet (2-2, 7.58); Monday RHP Jack Flaherty (0-1, 4.05) vs. RHP Sonny Gray (2-1, 4.43)FRIDAY'S SCOUTING REPORT Mize, Tigers: This is Mize's fourth start of the season. Two of the first three were impressive, including last time out, when he held the Miami Marlins to one run on six hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out five and walked only one. His only clunker this season was two starts against the Twins in Minneapolis, where it was frigid and he was struggling to get a good feel for his bread-and-butter strikeout pitch, the splitter. Suarez, Red Sox: It was a rude start to his Boston career for Suarez, who signed a six-year, $140 million contract this offseason. He didn't make it out of the fifth inning in either of his first two starts with the Red Sox. But he was back on point last time out, throwing six shutout innings against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six.tpaul@detroitnews.com@tonypaul1984Want to comment on this story?
