WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMWho Is Pellegrino Matarazzo? American Math Expert Leading Real SociedadA 48-year-old American coach who studied mathematics at Columbia and grew up watching Diego Maradona play for Napoli is now part of the history of Spanish club Real Sociedad in the Basque Country. Pellegrino "Rino" Matarazzo led Sociedad to its fourth Copa del Rey title on Saturday with a penalty-shootout win over Atltico Madrid. It was the first career title for the coach who left the United States to try to play soccer professionally and ended up becoming a manager in Germany. "Just the feeling you have of, Wow, wow. This happened. We did it," said Matarazzo, who in less than four months took Sociedad from near the relegation zone in the Spanish league to lifting the prestigious Copa del Rey trophy. The New Jersey-born coach was hired in December when Sociedad was two points above the relegation zone. He guided it back to safety and to its title run in the Copa in what he called "an unbelievable journey." "If you think about all the games that we played, every game has been very, very special since I arrived, and I think we finished with a very special game," the soft-spoken Matarazzo said. Matarazzo downplayed his role in the team's turnaround and credited his players' talent and character for the improvement and the title run in the Copa. "I'm very grateful to be manager of this club, very, very grateful," Matarazzo said. "Being part of its history now is, of course, something special, and I'm also very grateful to have this team, these players, this staff, this club. Its a product of the work we've done together in the past weeks." Italian roots Matarazzo is from an Italian family whose parents met in the United States after immigrating to the country for work. Matarazzo's first language was Italian before he went to school. He used to watch Serie A matches on a small television in his father's bedroom during the time that Argentina great Maradona played for Napoli. In an interview with Sociedad's TV channel, Matarazzo said he was always passionate about soccer even though the sport was far from popular while he grew up in the United States. Before moving to Germany to try to play, Matarazzo earned a degree in mathematics from Columbia University, which he said has helped him as a coach even though he knows that the job is about people and not just numbers. Career in Germany Matarazzo, a defender, first tried to play in Italy but ended up returning to the United States after what he called broken promises by agents. He was then invited by a friend to go to Germany, where he moved in his early 20s without knowing a word of German. He ended up staying and working in the country for 25 years. Matarazzo started playing in the fourth division and eventually moved into coaching with Nurembergs reserves and youth sides. He was an assistant to Julian Nagelsmann when both were at Hoffenheim in 2018, then landed the Stuttgart job in December 2019. He steered the club back to the Bundesliga at the first attempt and guided it to a commendable finish in his first top-flight season. He was fired by Stuttgart in late 2022 and about four months later was hired by Hoffenheim, where he stayed until the end of 2024, when he was let go following a disappointing season. Matarazzo got off to a great start in Spain, and he hoped it could be "just the beginning" of a long and successful stint for him and the club. "I hope that we continue to stay ambitious because we still have seven games left in La Liga and we can do more," he said. "I'm not done yet, and hopefully we are not done yet." USA Coaching Future? While Matarazzo is currently making history in Spain, his path nearly brought him back to the United States. Before the federation ultimately appointed Mauricio Pochettino, Matarazzo was a serious candidate for the USA head coaching vacancy in 2024. Despite turning down MLS offers to remain in Europe, he held extensive talks with U.S. Soccer about leading the program into the 2026 World Cup. Reflecting on the process, Matarazzo did not show bitterness when asked about being passed over for the Argentines "star-factor." Matarazzo told The Athletic: "I did truly appreciate the great conversations we had. They were very, very thoughtful, well-structured, professional, and Im sure Pochettino is an excellent choice." He noted that for a nation hosting the World Cup, the federation needed to "energize the U.S. soccer landscape emotionally," a task he believes an established coach like Pochettino can accomplish. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJalen Brunson's honest take on stardom amid Knicks NBA Playoffs clash vs. HawksJalen Brunson's honest take on stardom amid Knicks NBA Playoffs clash vs. Hawks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The NBA Playoffs are cutthroat. A lot of stars start to fade after 82 games and turn into non-factors when the postseason kicks off. Jalen Brunson was quite the opposite. He rose to the occasion when the Dallas Mavericks needed him and he continues to do the same for the New York Knicks. Amid their first-round matchup with the Atlanta Hawks, he got to reflect on his rise to stardom.Brunson gets real on how he became a Knicks, Mavericks NBA Playoffs greatJalen Brunson entered the league as a two-time national champion with the Villanova Wildcats. During his first years with the Mavericks, he practically lived behind the shadow of Luka Doncic. But, a single NBA Playoffs game against the Utah Jazz changed all of that. The run where he went from scoring eight points per game to notching over 21 points per night in the postseason happened a little over four years ago now.Despite the calendar turning a lot of pages since then, Brunson has not quite changed. He still continues to deliver in the NBA Playoffs and it was evident in Game 1 against the Hawks. He sank 40% of his shots from the field and 75% of his three-pointers to get a team-high 28 points. Unsurprisingly, Brunson also led the Knicks to their first win in the NBA Playoffs with a 113-102 demolition of the Hawks. So, how is he feeling with all the changes in the past four years? Brunson kept his answer simple, via James L. Edwards of The Athletic."The first couple of years before that, I was just chipping away and chipping away. I was working every day. You work on your game to be the best, most complete player you can be. When youre out there on the court, you have to perfect the role thats asked of you. Every day, I was working on my game. In the summers, I was getting better," the Knicks star said.Brunson and the Knicks have a tough NBA Playoffs road ahead of them. A lot of heavy-hitters like the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons will stand in their way enroute to the NBA Finals. But, he knows that and likes his chances because he is always ready for a challenge."When an opportunity like that comes around, theres no reason to get ready when you stay ready," Brunson added.Readiness and not being scared of the moment seem to be his mantra. Will this be able to lead the Knicks to a Larry O'Brien trophy for the first time in 53 years?More Knicks News:How Jalen Brunson is approaching James Dolan, Knicks' NBA Finals expectationMike Brown turns competitive amid James Dolan's Knicks NBA Finals ultimatumHow much are Knicks playoff tickets?0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 2KB Visualizações 0 Anterior
