IPL 2026: R Ashwin rallies behind Karun Nair after costly drops, says 'Im not making excuses'
Punjab Kings pulled off the highest successful run chase in IPL history, hunting down 265 against Delhi Capitals in Delhi. But for Karun Nair, it was a night of missed opportunities and visible heartbreak. Nair endured a difficult outing in the field, dropping Shreyas Iyer twice in the space of four balls, errors that proved decisive in the context of the game. The first chance came on the final ball of the 15th over, when Vipraj Nigam induced a mistimed lofted shot from Iyer towards long-off. Nair settled under it comfortably but spilled what looked like a straightforward catch. The reaction said it all, Nigam dropped to the ground in disbelief, knowing a crucial opportunity had gone begging.Just four balls later, Iyer got another lifeline. On the second ball of the 16th over, Kuldeep Yadav deceived him with a wrongun. The ball took the top edge and ballooned towards long-on, but Nair, once again positioned perfectly, failed to hold on.After the second drop, Nair appeared visibly shaken, almost on the verge of tears, as Delhi let the game slip further away. Iyer made the most of his reprieves, playing a match-winning knock of 71 off 36 balls to guide Punjab Kings home with seven balls to spare, sealing a historic chase.Despite the costly errors, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came out in strong support of Nair, offering a measured perspective on his struggles.Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said:"Let me tell you about Karun Nairs situation. When a player knows they aren't in the playing XI, they usually find out at least a day in advance. Players who are dropped or rested often hit the gym or do extra training on match days to stay fit, knowing the next day might be a travel day with late-night flights and limited practice time. So, maybe Karun Nair was mentally "switched off" though thats probably the wrong word, but he might have been fatigued from training. Im not making excuses, but for a substitute to suddenly step into the intensity of the game, these things can happen,'' Ashwin said. TheFakeFakeer (@TheFakeFakeer) ''He dropped one catch, and his confidence just plummeted after that. Karun is actually a fabulous fielder; Ive seen him be very reliable in first-class and red-ball cricket, especially in close-in positions. Ive rarely seen him drop catches like that, but today was just one of those days," Ashwin added. 130529390

Today IPL Match, LSG vs KKR: Predicted playing XI, head-to-head, pitch report, Lucknow weather update
Lucknow Super Giants season is now less about promise and more about problem solving. Four straight defeats have pushed Rishabh Pants side to ninth place, with their batting wobbles and inability to turn Ekana into an advantage becoming the two biggest threats to their playoff hopes.Sundays return to Lucknow against Kolkata Knight Riders, themselves bottom of the table, is therefore more than another league fixture. It is a survival test for two sides short on points and confidence, but with contrasting areas of concern. LSG need runs and clarity. KKR need to prove their first win was not a one-off.Lucknows slide has been sharp. Their top order has not given them the Powerplay lift a T20 chase or first-innings launch demands, while the middle order has too often been left to repair innings rather than build them. The home record has deepened the unease, with LSG yet to win at Ekana this season after three defeats in Lucknow.KKR, in contrast, travel with a small but significant lift after beating Rajasthan Royals for their first win of the campaign. That result was built around their spinners and lower middle order and it has given them a template against an LSG batting unit still searching for fluency. Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narines control could become central if the surface offers even modest grip.LSG vs KKR: Head-to-HeadMatches played: 7Lucknow Super Giants won: 5Kolkata Knight Riders won: 2LSG vs KKR Today IPL Match: Pitch ReportThe pitch was under close watch on Saturday. A black-soil surface was rolled even as LSG global cricket director Tom Moody, head coach Justin Langer and Pant inspected the strip. The captain even felt the surface by hand. Early indications suggested a better batting surface, which would put the Powerplay, where both teams have had issues, under sharper scrutiny.LSG vs KKR IPL Match: Lucknow Weather UpdateThe weather in Lucknow for tonight's match (26 April 2026) is forecast to be extremely hot and dry, with a severe heatwave affecting the region.
