52-Year-Old Backed As The New Manager Of Celtic: Will He Genuinely Represent Progress?
52-Year-Old Backed As The New Manager Of Celtic: Will He Genuinely Represent Progress?Celtics board is facing a massive summer. According to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, Roberto Martinez is the most obvious way to fix the growing rift with the fans. Speaking on Football Insiders Inside Track podcast, Wyness, who led Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004 before senior roles at Everton and Villa, argued that hiring Martinez would finally get Dermot Desmond and the board off the hook.Celtic fans demand the board act, and Martinez could be the answerWyness clearly thinks highly of the Spaniard, calling him a good operator and a good solution for the club. He pointed out that Martinez has the profile Celtic need, thanks to his Premier League years at Wigan and Everton and his time managing heavyweights like Belgium and Portugal. He also didnt mince words about Wilfried Nancy, calling that appointment a massive gamble that blew up in the boards face. Wyness is certain the fans will settle for nothing less than a marquee name, though getting Martinez would mean the board has to push the boat out financially. With his Portugal contract ending after this summers World Cup, the timing for a move couldnt be better.I know Roberto and I have a good fondness for him.He would be a good operator for Celtic. He may actually be a good solution because it gets Dermot Desmond and the board off the hook. Its showing some actual hope and taking the club forward, appointing a bigger name than Wilfried Nancy, who was, in the kindest way, perhaps not the biggest name.Martinez is proven, hes handled Premier League clubs. Great stories at Wigan, did well at Everton and Belgium. Perhaps not fulfilling their potential, but thats more to do, I think, with the players. He is well respected in the game, well liked in the game, and if Celtic were to get him theyd have to push the boat out, but the fans would demand that.Would Martinez genuinely represent progress or another calculated risk for Celtic?ATLANTA, GEORGIA MARCH 31: Manager Roberto Martinez of Portugal looks on prior to the international friendly match between United States and Portugal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on March 31, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)The truth is, hes likely a bit of both: a real step forward, but still a familiar kind of boardroom gamble. Martinez has the CV to back it up; hes won three trophies, including that famous 2013 FA Cup with Wigan and the 2024-25 Nations League with Portugal. His tactics are also a great match for the Celtic DNA perfectly. Plus, his long history with Shaun Maloney (who played for him and coached alongside him) would give the club some much-needed stability.Hes sharp tactically and great with players, but there are still valid concerns. His Everton teams were notoriously leaky at the back after his first season, and he hasnt been in the day-to-day grind of club football since 2016. Ten years away from the league circuit is a long time.Martinez has already said his mind is entirely on the World Cup, so Celtic would have to be patient and fight off other suitors. The board has a chance to make a real statement here, but as theyve already learned this year, big names dont mean much if the foundation underneath them isnt right.

Jeanie Buss on Luka Doncic trade: 'I think Mark Cuban might have jumped in front of a train to keep it from happening'
Jeanie Buss: Those conversations started the beginning of January, right? I'll never forget that's when all of Los Angeles was on fire. In order to trade somebody like Anthony Davis, it would have to be with [my] approval and certainly getting a player of Luka's caliber and him being at the beginning end of his career was just an extraordinary opportunity. But it required a lot of strategy and a lot of small steps in order to pull it off. And Rob Pelinka... was able to do that all with it out leaking to the media, because I think Mark Cuban might have jumped in front of a train to keep it from happening. Nobody knew, including Luka. And Anthony Davis. And we had a game in New York that night. And so the coach knew that this was gonna happen, but he still had to play the game. And we won the game that night... Then all the world turned upside down.InstagramThis article originally appeared on Hoops Hype: Jeanie Buss on Luka Doncic trade: 'I think Mark Cuban might have jumped in front of a train to keep it from happening'

FIFA Proposes New World Cup Yellow Card Rule To Avoid Knockout Round Bans
FIFA is preparing to tweak World Cup rules on yellow cards to ensure fewer players are suspended for key elimination games in North America. An extra amnesty for yellow cards wiping player disciplinary records twice during the expanded tournament will be proposed to a meeting Tuesday of FIFAs ruling council, people familiar with the plan told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision is not yet official. At the World Cup, players must serve a one-game ban if they are shown a yellow card in two different games, but they were canceled at previous tournaments after the quarterfinals stage. That ensured no player would miss the final through suspension if they are booked for a yellow card in the semifinal. The expanded 48-team World Cup format, with an extra round-of-32 knockout stage, led to a FIFA review aimed at helping keep players on the field. FIFA proposes to clear the disciplinary records of players who have one yellow card after the three-game group stage so they start the knockout phase afresh. A second amnesty after the quarterfinals will apply for players who got one yellow during the three previous knockout rounds and whose teams advanced to the semifinals. The World Cup will be played June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
