Fast-forward to today, and the organization has made the decision to go the other direction, activating him from the IL just to option him down to Triple-A Scranton.Following todays game, the Yankees returned INF Anthony Volpe from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) May 3, 2026The move comes after days of speculation, as manager Aaron Boone was non-committal on Volpes immediate future with his rehab assignment nearing the end. What was seen as his likely activation target in the start of this most recent homestand with the Orioles came and went without a word on his status, pushing the final decision into the weekend. Eventually, time ran out and the Yankees showed their hand, sending down their everyday shortstop since his arrival to the majors in 2023 in favor of keeping Jos Caballero as the starter.Caballeros play has been the biggest factor in this development, seeing as general manager Brian Cashman deemed Volpes return a near-automatic assumption right before Volpes rehab began, saying thats always been the plan. Caballero was hitting for a paltry .384 OPS at the time of those comments, but has since gone on a heater raising his OPS to .719. His last 12 games hes been particularly hot, hitting for a .302/.348/.535 triple slash (.883 OPS). Coming off of a season where he played most of the year hurt and consequently looked terrible, Volpe needed his competition to look unimpressive if he hoped to be handed the starting gig back, but that just hasnt happened.During his rehab assignment, Volpe played four games with Scranton and eight with Double-A Somerset, earning a .683 OPS with one homer and six RBI when combining his games across the two teams. Had he hit the ground on fire during his rehab, perhaps he still couldve won out and retaining his position, but the teams last-minute decision indicates that they were waiting to see something from the 25-year-old that didnt manifest in time for them to feel comfortable inserting him back in their lineup. Volpe will now have to work on his game in Triple-A in order to earn his playing time back, in what may prove to be his first real run through the level of competition. Volpe played just 22 games with Scranton at the end of the 2022 season before winning the starting job with the Yankees in spring training ahead of 2023, and had been with the team through the good times and hard times since.His future will also be impacted by the development of George Lombard Jr., the teams top prospect who was also recently promoted to Triple-A after raking to start the year in Somerset. Lombards trajectory through the organization could see him make his MLB debut as early as the end of this season, with a decent shot at earning a role with the 2027 team. Lombard shifted over to third base to allow Volpe to play his natural position during his rehab, and the fastest track to the majors might see Lombard move around the infield should the team want to play him over Ryan McMahon or Jazz Chisholm Jr., but hes already an elite defender and finding his bat in the upper levels of the minors. Thats reminiscent of how a young Anthony Volpe looked when he was the teams top prospect and rising through the organization, but now he finds his security in the teams future threatened in the short and long-term if he cannot tap into that nascent talent again.

Detroit The Pistons finally did something they haven't done since 2008: Win a playoff series. In Game 7 at Little Caesars Arena, they defeated the Orlando Magic, 116-94, on Sunday to end the drought.It took winning three straight games after falling behind 3-1 in the series to the eight-seeded Magic highlighted by a 24-point comeback in Game 6 at Orlando but the Pistons find themselves in the second round of the NBA playoffs for the first time in almost two decades."It's great. We had a great regular season. We built a lot of momentum going into the playoffs and to lose in the first round would've really stung. I think it would've stung the city," Cade Cunningham said.If anyone knows the struggle that the franchise has gone through, it's Cunningham. Being drafted in 2021 and going through multiple seasons with 60-plus losses, including a 28-game losing streak during the 2023-2024 season, Cunningham took all the punches of falling flat in the NBA.But ever since J.B. Bickerstaff became head coach, things changed. Bickerstaff and Cunningham immediately worked to turn the Pistons around, as the team went from 14 wins in 2023-24 to 44 wins in 2024-25 to 60 wins this season.In the first round against Orlando, Cunningham averaged 32.4 points and 6.3 assists, including finishing with 32 points and 12 assists in Game 7. The Pistons suffered road losses in Game 3 and Game 4 to be pushed to the brink of elimination, but they won three straight, with two of those coming at home.Every Game 7 has a player that exceeds expectations to give his team a spark. For the Pistons, it was Daniss Jenkins, who came into the season as a two-way player but flourished throughout. He shined in Cunningham's absence, but he had trouble finding his shot through the first six games of this series.That all changed Sunday. Jenkins played 29 minutes off the bench and shined with 16 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Texas Motor Speedway (Fort Worth, Texas) Chase Elliott isnt always known for being a driver who is able to win early in the season. But hes making 2026 a year when he's capitalizing on opportunities. Elliott earned his second win of 2026. This season, he has notched two victories in the first 11 races, six races earlier than he has ever done in his previous 11 seasons. "I'm proud of our team for that because anytime you can check off new boxes in this sport when you've been doing it for 10-plus years is cool. It's hard to do," Elliott said in his post-race news conference. "It's hard to win. So I'm really proud of our team for that and just proud of the day that we had. It was one of our strongest races that we've had in quite some time." Here are my takeaways: 1. Chase Elliott A Threat While Tyler Reddick has been the talk of the season with five wins, Chase Elliott earning two already has him third in the standings. With the team still figuring out the new Chevrolet body, they might have the most potential for growth. "We just feel like the Toyotas came into the season really hot, and they did some great work over the offseason," four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon said in his post-race news conference as Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman. "I want to give them credit. We had a lot of change-over with the new car. We're searching and finding what's going to work. And some tracks, it works good. Some tracks it doesn't." 2. Wrecks Stymie Contenders Contact on pit road foiled a potential race-winning day for Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano, while contact on the track foiled potential race-winning days for Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs. Bell was leading when he got clipped by spinning Todd Gilliland. Briscoe was in the top five when he had contact with Kyle Larson on pit road. In another bizarre pit-road incident, Joey Logano ran into Cole Custer, who had stopped in front of Logano to let Ty Gibbs out of his pit. Gibbs was soon in the garage after slapping the wall from apparent contact with Ryan Preece. Gibbs told me he didnt know what happened. The common theme with all the drivers here? All of them except for Gibbs are still looking for their first win this season. For Bell, he knows he had a race-winning car. "I thought that I could shoot the gap on the bottom, and I thought I did shoot the gap on the bottom, and I got clipped," he told me and other reporters after the accident. 3. Busch-Nemechek Tangle At End Kyle Busch and John Hunter Nemechek tangled at the end of the race with them having contact up by the wall when battling for position and then Busch door slamming Nemechek, sending Nemechek into the wall. They both took to social media, with Nemechek indicating that Busch wasnt clear to pull the initial move and Busch indicating that Nemechek had enough room to move up and for them not to have contact. NASCAR, as it always does with any on-track incident, will review it to determine if any penalties are warranted. 4. Bowman Back-To-Back Thirds Alex Bowman, who missed four races because of vertigo earlier this year, has posted back-to-back third-place finishes. That they came at the high-speed Talladega and Texas tracks should give him confidence as he continues to rally from the injury. "We're definitely headed in the right direction," Bowman said in his FS1 interview after the race. 4 1/2. Whats Next: Watkins Glen The Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen for a rare trip in the spring rather than the summer. The Mothers Day weekend race will feature all three national series. And at least three drivers are doing all three races the three Trackhouse drivers, Connor Zilisch, Shane van Gisbergen and Ross Chastain. Zilisch and SVG are known for their prowess on road courses and will be among the favorites for all three. The truck race will include another Cup driver who is a road-course ace: AJ Allmendinger will be in a Kaulig Racing truck.
