WWW.FOXSPORTS.COM2026 NFL Breakout Candidates: 10 Second-Year Players Poised to Make a LeapWe all get caught up in the excitement surrounding the current year's NFL Draft, as the top prospects find new homes to start their pro careers. But with the 2026 NFL Draft behind us, we now get a chance to see which players teams are trusting on their rosters the most ahead of the upcoming season. Many of those players are entering their second season. Not every NFL star finds immediate success, and others need a year to adjust to the pro game before finding themselves and thriving at the highest level. You'll hear that a player's biggest improvement can happen between his first and second NFL season, and we've chosen 10 players across the league who should have opportunities to make such a leap. Some were limited by injuries as rookies, some are stepping into much larger roles, but all of them have a chance to show significant progress in 2026. The Buffalo Bills went 12-5 and had the NFL's No. 1 pass defense in 2025, but Sean McDermott was fired and Jim Leonhard is in as the new defensive coordinator. Maxwell Hairston, the 30th overall pick in the 2025 draft, was derailed early by a preseason knee injury, but he'll go from three starts as a rookie to opening the year as a starting outside corner. The Bills have had a frustrating run of regular-season success with only one conference championship appearance in the last five years. If they're to get there in 2026, they'll need young players like Hairston to step up in a big way. The Jacksonville Jaguars were content to let Travis Etienne leave in free agency, signing with the New Orleans Saints after rushing for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Part of that was a confidence in Bhayshul Tuten, a fourth-round pick from Virginia Tech who had 307 yards and five touchdowns in limited work as the top backup. Chris Rodriguez, signed from the Washington Commanders in free agency, will compete for carries, but has a chance to step into a much larger role in Liam Coen's prolific offense. After a quiet rookie season, could Jack Bech emerge as rookie Fernando Mendoza's favorite receiver? Tight end Brock Bowers might be the offense's primary target, but Bech who had 20 catches for 224 yards and no touchdowns last year could easily outpace Tre Tucker and newcomer Jalen Nailor as the Las Vegas Raiders' best downfield threat. He broke out as a senior at TCU in 2024 with 1,034 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, and he has as good a chance as any to benefit from a No. 1 overall pick throwing the ball in Las Vegas. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense was a major part of their second-half collapse, losing seven of eight games and missing the playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Tampa Bay allowed cornerback Jamel Dean to leave for the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency and hasn't made any significant additions at outside corner, so they're trusting that Benjamin Morrison and Zyon McCollum can be much improved, with the help of an upgraded defensive front. As much as anything, the former second-round pick must show he can stay healthy after missing seven games as a rookie with a hamstring injury. If the Kansas City Chiefs can get back on track in 2026, Josh Simmons will have to be a key part of that, as a first-round pick who was limited to eight games as a rookie, missing four games with a family issue and the last five with a fractured wrist. The Chiefs didn't touch the offensive line in the draft, so it will be Josh Simmons tasked with protecting Patrick Mahomes' blind side once he's back from injury. Kansas City has given up 40-plus sacks in back-to-back seasons and needs to get back to under 30 to preserve Mahomes. For a first-round receiver to go his entire rookie season without a touchdown is a major disappointment, and Matthew Golden finished with 29 catches for 361 yards while playing 43% of the Green Bay Packers' offensive snaps. The Packers' confidence in Golden was seen this spring, when they allowed Romeo Doubs to sign with the New England Patriots and traded Dontayvian Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. Christian Watson is likely still the Packers' No. 1 receiver, but Golden should challenge him and could easily double his own overall rookie numbers. With Micah Parsons traded away, Donovan Ezeiruaku got to play a ton of snaps as a rookie, mustering only two sacks but nine tackles for loss. With Rashan Gary on board, the Dallas Cowboys have upgraded their overall pass rush from 2025, and Ezeiruaku will benefit from that he nearly tripled his sack totals from his freshman to sophomore year at Boston College. A young, new defensive coordinator in Christian Parker will improve what was the worst scoring defense in the NFL, and Ezeiruaku could be a central part of that. Omarion Hampton was taken 22nd overall but missed half his rookie season with an ankle injury. In the nine games he played, he rushed for 545 yards and four touchdowns, with another 192 yards receiving. To be the lead back in a Mike McDaniel offense is a huge boost, and the Los Angeles Chargers will benefit from a much healthier offensive line after playing most of 2025 without either starting tackle. The interior of the offensive line has been upgraded, and Hampton should get the largest share of carries ahead of backups Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal. He's a safe bet for a 1,000-yard season if he stays healthy as part of a team poised to make a deep playoff run. After sitting on the bench for the first half of 2025, Shough made a strong impression in the final nine games, leading the New Orleans Saints on a surprise four-game win streak. His overall numbers were modest 10 touchdowns against six interceptions, with another three scores rushing. What stands out is how he did with a skeleton crew of supporting cast, throwing to receiver Chris Olave and tight end Juwan Johnson, but precious little in terms of depth. This has been a busy offseason, loading up on offensive talent for the Saints, spending big on running back Travis Etienne and adding veteran guard David Edwards. Then, in the draft, not only did the Saints add wide receiver Jordyn Tyson with the eighth overall pick, but they also added third-round tight end Oscar Delp and drafted two other receivers. With an offensive coach like Kellen Moore, Shough has no excuse not to take a step forward in his second year. In the last two years, the Saints have totaled 40 touchdown passes. Only four teams have fewer, and all four (Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants) have gone 8-26 or worse in those two seasons. Shough needs to take a step forward and get this offense back to where it averaged 27 touchdown passes per season in the first three years after Drew Brees' retirement, even while starting six different quarterbacks. The bigger question: Can either of last year's other rookie starters, Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans or Jaxson Dart of the New York Giants, make similar jumps in their second seasons and help their teams get back to competitive football again? The novelty of a two-way NFL player was the allure with Travis Hunter, and the Jacksonville Jaguars believed in him enough to give up their 2026 first-round pick in moving up from No. 5 to No. 2 last spring. But Hunter's debut season was disappointing on both sides of the ball. He had 28 catches for 298 yards and a single touchdown at receiver and had even less production at corner, posting 15 tackles and zero interceptions. After seven games, his rookie season ended early with a knee injury, watching as the Jaguars finished 13-4 and won a division title. Huner's on course to be fully recovered by the start of training camp, and it should be a simpler second season for him. It remains to be seen how much work he'll get on offense the Jaguars traded for Jakobi Meyers during last season and gave him a lucrative extension, and they've held off on trading third-year receiver Brian Thomas Jr., with Parker Washington enjoying a breakout season last year. Hunter should be an every-down corner, and that side of the ball should be his focus and the best chance for him to shine. Jacksonville let Greg Newsome leave in free agency and didn't draft a corner, setting Hunter up for a central role. Can Hunter get back to being the playmaker who had seven interceptions in his last two seasons at Colorado? That remains to be seen.0 Comments 0 Shares 62 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy Basketball Exit Interview: Magic face roster and coaching questions after playoff disappointmentThe Magics season was a rollercoaster. Written off before the Play-In, they took out a red-hot Hornets squad. Then, Orlando pushed the top-seeded Pistons to seven games, suddenly looking like a legitimate threat instead of the inconsistent group we saw all season. The talent is there, but another first-round exit means the front office cant afford to stand pat change is coming in Orlando, starting with firing coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday. Lets look back on the Magics season and what it meant for fantasy. Will Paolo and Franz ever work? Its the biggest question in Orlando.Franz Wagner logged just 34 games, so were still left guessing what the pairing really looks like. Paolo Bancherodid all the heavy liftin g 72 games, 22-8-5 with 1.3 stocks with better efficiency and more fantasy value than he gets credit for (27th in High Score, 134th in nine-cat). Not elite in nine-cat, but valuable core counting stats. Where Banchero goes in drafts depends on the league type.Wagner, when actually on the floor, was solid: 21-5-3 with decent efficiency. But the 3-ball is still broken and the defensive stats dipped. Im chalking this one up to bad luck, and with an offseason to rehab, theres no reason to think he wont return to a fourth- or fifth-rounder by the preseason. Both have one distinct flaw, though neither can consistently hit 3s. Orlandos offense looked ugly because the spacing and flow were ragged, with either guy unable to be a threat on the perimeter. A change in the offensive scheme will maximize the value of these two $40M cornerstones of the franchise.Other key fantasy assetsDesmond Bane just did what he does: showed up, clocked in, and delivered. He averaged 37 fantasy points per game good for top 65 in High Score and 41st in 9-cat, making him Orlandos top fantasy asset. Bane poured in 24 points, 4 boards and 4 assists, averaging 1.5 stocks per game, shooting well from everywhere. The best part, though? He played all 82 games. If you want an efficient high-floor guard-forward, Bane is generally a good pick in the fourth round.Jalen Suggs was the culture-setter on defense averaging 2.5 stocks, flying around and stuffing the stat sheet across the board. After being drafted 101st overall, he finished 71st in High Score and 54th in 9-cat, providing real value in both formats. If only he could stay healthy. Suggs high-motor style is a double-edged sword. Hes always in the mix, but it leads to too much wear and tear. Still, at the right draft price, hes worth the risk, projecting as a top-75 player heading into next season.Final thoughtsWith Jamahl Mosley fired, who will be the next head coach? That's the first question this front office needs to answer. Even with the play-in and first-round efforts, this team has underachieved for years with a stagnant, non-creative offense. The offensive dysfunction was a coaching problem as much as a personnel one. I want to see a more expansive role for Anthony Black, as he drastically improved in his third season. Wendell Carter was the only other relevant fantasy asset for the Magic and remains a back-end bench depth bigman for 9-cat formats.0 Comments 0 Shares 82 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMNFL Offseason Check-in: Can Carnell Tate Be Titans WR1 After Being Ohio States WR2?NASHVILLE, Tenn. Carnell Tate spent his first two Titans practices largely out of sight. After a team stretch during rookie minicamp last week, the No. 4 overall pick like the rest of Tennessees 2026 draft selections worked with the strength and conditioning staff. But there will come a time when the receiver will be on the field, running routes and catching passes from quarterback Cam Ward, last year's No. 1 overall pick. Tate's draft slot makes the expectation clear: Eventually, heneeds to be a WR1-caliber player. Hes pivotal to Wards development and to the Titans offense. Tate doesnt sound overwhelmed by that expectation. "I just go out there and play football," he told reporters on Friday. "The ball will find you. You just go out there and make the best of your opportunities, like I've always done." But not as a WR1. Its well documented: In Ohio States (always) loaded wide receiver room, Tate was WR2 behind Jeremiah Smith last season. As a sophomore in 2024, Tate was the third option behind Smith and Emeka Egbuka, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first-round pick last year. That means that at the highest level of football, Tate will need to grow into something he hasnt been. "He's got to compete; he has got to prove that he belongs," new Titans head coach Robert Saleh said Friday. "Hes got to [show] that he deserves the ball, and it's going to start day one once he gets here." As a rookie, Ward never had a go-to target in Tennessees abysmal offense, which ranked third-worst in the NFL in scoring (16.7 points per game). Titans receivers were plagued by dropped passes and issues creating separation. Former All-Pro Calvin Ridley was a disappointment in 2025, missing 10 games due to injury and averaging just 43.3 receiving yards per contest when he was on the field. TheTitans leading pass-catcher was tight end Chig Okonkwo (560 receiving yards), who signed with the Washington Commanders in free agency. Tennessee added free-agent WanDale Robinson, who was a 1,000-yard receiver last season for the Giants. Robinson spent the first three-plus years of his NFL career playing under Brian Daboll, the former New York head coach and now the Titans' offensive coordinator. Second-year pros Chimere Dike an All-Pro returner as a rookie and Elic Ayomanor are ascending players. But Tate is the high-end, young talent the team desperately needs at the position. In the Titans eyes, hes a complete wide receiver. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound Tate is a big target with contested-catch ability. He has great tracking skills and the catch radius to match. Hes an efficient route-runner and a willing blocker. What Tate lacks as a burner (4.53-second 40-yard dash) he makes up for in play speed. Hes "elusive and sudden" off the line of scrimmage, as Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi puts it, and can separate from defensive backs at the top of his routes. With Tates presence, Ward may be able to let it fly more downfield. Among the 33 qualified quarterbacks last season, he ranked 28th in deep passing rate (8.1%), according to Next Gen Stats. At Ohio State in 2025, Tate ranked second in the FBS with nine catches of 40-plus yards. "He got behind the defense in a pretty good league in college," Daboll said at rookie minicamp. "And then his range and ability to track the ball and his hands. His hands have been very good. His ability to pluck it and high point it and make catches in traffic. Hes a crafty route-runner. "Look, hes going to have a lot of challenging things that happen to him as a young receiver," Daboll added. "Theres a transition from college to the NFL, as there is with every position. But his mindset, his makeup [stand out]. We had a really good 30 visit. Hes a very mature young man for only being 21 years old." In Dabolls offense, the wide receivers are expected to know all the spots in the formation. So the plan is to move Tate around. How he processes that remains to be seen. "Well give him as much as he can handle," Daboll said. The Titans have a "consensus vision" on what Tate will be in the offense, according to assistant GM Dave Zeiger. "A lot of times, you get the bigger, taller, linear receivers. I call them first- and second-down guys," Zeigler told reporters last week. "Theyre not productive on third down because they don't have the route tree to do that. Or you have a bigger guy that doesn't consistently play big at the catch point. "Carnell checked a lot of those boxes. We're feeling we're really getting a complete three-down player that can contribute on these critical downs and these critical situations, third down and the red zone." When Tate starts to practice, well see if the former college WR2 can be a true WR1 in the NFL.0 Comments 0 Shares 68 Views 0 Reviews -
