SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBobby Cox, legendary Atlanta Braves manager and Baseball Hall of Famer, dies at 84When you think of the great Atlanta Braves players, theres Hank, Dale, Chipper and the three big pitchers, but when it comes to manager, theres only one name: Bobby Cox.Cox has died at the age of 84, the Braves announced on Saturday. We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper. Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995. His Braves managerial legacy will never be matched, Braves said in a statement.Bobby was a favorite among all in the baseball community, especially those who played for him. His wealth of knowledge on player development and the intricacies of managing the game were rewarded with the sports ultimate prize in 2014 - enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame. And while Bobbys passion for the game was unparalleled, his love of baseball was exceeded only by his love for his family. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we send our sincerest condolences to his beloved wife, Pam, and their loving children and grandchildren."pic.twitter.com/t9f5yd0Inl Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 9, 2026Robert Joseph Cox was a humble man in a high-profile job who managed to control the universal impulse for self-promotion, a cleats guy who took great pride in being able to wear those cleats to work every day.He was born May 21, 1941, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cox started off as his career a baseball player after graduating from Selma High School in Californias San Joaquin Valley, signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959.The Braves acquired Cox in 1966, but he didnt make his big-league debut until the Yankees signed him 1968.My only claim to fame as a ballplayer actually was I got a chance to play with Mickey Mantle, Cox said. When bad knees ended Coxs playing days, he turned to managing. Ted Turner hired Cox to manage the long-suffering Braves in 1977. Cox started managing the Braves from 1978 to 1981 and returned to Atlanta as the teams general manager in 1986.In between stints, Cox managed the Blue Jays for four seasons, finishing second in the American League East behind the World Series-winning Detroit Tigers in 1984 and winning the division the next season. After four years as the team GM, Cox return the dugout in 1990 as the Braves skipper. He then led the team on a magical run of 14 consecutive division titles from 1991-2005.That included the Braves unbelievable worst to first season. In 1991, Coxs team was below 500 at the All-Star break, but nosed ahead of the Dodgers after the seasons 160th game. The city was on fire, it was full of energy. You know, I would ride to the ballpark and people on 75 would be honking their horns, they would recognize me, and this guy would look and his horn would honk, and they would honk and they would honk all the way into the city. I never seen a city energized like that, Cox said.In 1995, the Braves won Coxs only World Series championship, beating the Cleveland Indians at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.Tom Glavine, Dave Justice, those two -- yeah, those two (laughing). Tommy almost pitched a no-hitter. He pitched a two-hitter and Dave got one out of the ballpark, and thats all we needed, I remember, Cox said.Cox was considered the ultimate players manager. He rooted hard for his men from the dugout, and they played hard for him on the field. If theyre giving 100 percent, they were always going to be backed by me. If they werent, it was going to be a different story and thats all I asked them to do, was entertain the fans, give 100 percent all the time. Lets try to win, and when youre trying it was awfully hard for me to get mad at somebody, Cox said. One way Cox supported his players -- getting ejected from the game 132 times, including two World Series games. At Coxs 65th birthday party in 2006, Bill Acree -- the Braves longtime traveling secretary and one of Coxs close friends -- offered this toast: To work for him is to love him. When Cox won his 2,000th game on Sept. 29, 2004, he typically tried to deflect the spotlight.Weve had a lot of luck, he said. A lot of balls have bounced our way.But the longer he managed, the more the belief around baseball grew that he was the one manager capable of taking almost any sort of team and winning a division title with it.Cox retired from the Braves in 2010. The next year, the Braves retired Coxs No. 6.In 2014, Cox received baseballs highest award. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, along with two of his big three starting pitchers, Greg Maddux and Tommy Glavine.Tommy Lasorda said it best, he said, Bobby -- you, Tony and Joe have reached the top of the mountain, and its starting to sink in a little bit cause thats the highest award you can have, Cox said.Shortly following Brave opening day at then-SunTrust Park in 2019, Cox suffered a stroke, which left him with partial paralysis at the time sending him to rehab for months.About five months following his stroke, Cox made his first public appearance, walking out onto the field following the first inning of a Braves game to thunderous applause.I was excited that he was coming, Braves manager and long-time friend Brian Snitker said. I think he had his hot dog and had a great time. Hopefully, thats just the beginning of many visitsCox remained until the sixth inning. The last time Cox saw the Braves play was in August 2025 when the organization honored the 1995 World Series team. WWW.GBNEWS.COMTransgender athlete wins three events as protest erupts at US track meetA California high school track meet on Saturday became the latest flashpoint in the debate over transgender athletes in women's sport, with a demonstration outside the venue giving way to commanding performances inside. The CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Yorba Linda High School were preceded by a "Save Girls' Sports" rally, led by former NCAA competitor Sophia Lorey, which drew attention to concerns about competitive fairness.Once competition began, transgender athlete AB Hernandez, a senior from Jurupa Valley who previously competed in girls' volleyball, swept all three jumping events, claiming first place in the long jump, triple jump, and sharing top spot in the high jump.Hernandez's long jump mark of 20 feet, 4 inches left the rest of the field trailing by a considerable margin, with the second-placed competitor managing just 19 feet, 1 inches.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe gap proved even more pronounced in the triple jump, where Hernandez recorded 42 feet, 4 inches compared to 39 feet, 7 inches for the runner-upa difference of nearly three feet.In the high jump, Hernandez cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to finish level with Reese Hogan, an athlete who has previously crossed paths with Hernandez in competition. The results board laid bare the performance disparities across all three disciplines.Spectators at Yorba Linda High School expressed a sense of weary familiarity with the situation.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Fabio Wardley gives health update to his mother after losing Daniel Dubois boxing fightLuke Littler puts dream career move on hold because of girlfriend Faith MillarRory McIlroy forced to intervene after crowd incident at Truist Championship PROTECT GIRLS' SPORTS pic.twitter.com/n2mQPqvOrD OutKick (@Outkick) May 9, 2026 "It happened last year and I thought it'd be done, but it's California," remarked one grandparent who had come to support Moorpark High School, per Fox News.A father from Yucca Valley offered a more measured view: "I think they should have their own division. I just don't like bullying one kid."Hogan had previously made headlines by stepping onto the first-place podium position after an event Hernandez had won, a gesture celebrated by advocates for women's sport as a symbolic statement about rightful winners.Hernandez competed under California regulations that have permitted transgender athletes to participate in girls' sport for more than a decade. Those policies now sit at the heart of an escalating dispute between state and federal authorities over Title IX protections, with the Department of Justice having launched legal action against California over its transgender athlete rules.Governor Gavin Newsom's office responded by noting the governor was not personally named in the lawsuit whilst maintaining support for the state's existing legislation. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 36 Views 0 Anteprima -

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMWreck of deadliest US naval loss of World War I found after more than a century: 'Lost with all hands'American officials have announced the discovery of the wreck of the Coast Guard cutter Tampa a ship whose sinking was the deadliest U.S. naval combat loss of World War I.In an April 29 news release, the Coast Guard said the vessel was found roughly 50 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the southwestern tip of the United Kingdom.A British technical diving team called Gasperados found the wreck which was at a depth "exceeding 300 feet," officials said.'NATIONAL TREASURE' HONORING US COAST GUARD TO FEATURE PRICELESS ARTIFACTS, WWII SHIPIn 1918, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank within three minutes. All 131 people aboard died, including 111 Coast Guardsmen, 16 British Navy personnel and civilians, and four U.S. Navy personnel."When the Tampa was lost with all hands in 1918, it left an enduring grief in our service," Kevin Lunday, commandant of the Coast Guard, said in a statement."Locating the wreck connects us to their sacrifice and reminds us that devotion to duty endures. We will always remember them.We are proud to carry their spirit forward in defense of the United States."DIVERS DISCOVER VINTAGE CAR IN WWII SHIPWRECKOfficials said the discovery was three years in the making. The Coast Guard Historian's Office was contacted by Gasperados divers about locating the wreck in 2023, and the two worked together to confirm the site."Over the past three years, the all-volunteer team conducted an extensive search for the wreckage," the release noted.Looking ahead, the Coast Guard is planning further underwater research at the site.DEADLY SHIPWRECK UNCOVERED BY FORMER MILITARY PILOT WHO SPOTTED ONE HISTORIC CLUEMultiple clues pointed to Tampa's final resting place, said William Thiesen, a Coast Guard Atlantic Area historian.Thiesen told Fox News Digital that, at the time, contemporaries recorded key clues about the sinking including a U-boat commander's reported position, accounts from Tampa's convoy hearing an explosion and an aircraft spotting debris and logging coordinates."The problem was many of the bearings and locations noted had to be cross-referenced with wrecks on the sea floor," the historian said."Until the Gasperados volunteered for the mission to find Tampa three years ago, the task seemed impossible."DEADLY SHIPWRECK UNCOVERED BY FORMER MILITARY PILOT WHO SPOTTED ONE HISTORIC CLUEThiesen added that the dive team dealt with low water visibility and poor weather conditions, as well as "very deep water.""There are countless wreck sites in that region to complicate the search process," he said."Before finding the current site, the Gasperados located other wrecks believed to be Tampa that proved to be fishing vessels or other sunken wrecks. These obstacles seemed insurmountable, but the group pushed on for over three years."Researchers confirmed the wreck using detailed historical records and Thiesen said the site is being treated "with the utmost respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country and our allies."He added, "The Gasperados, who located the site, adhere to the strictest standards of respect for the wreck site and the losses it represents.""Any plans for the future will also be carried out with the utmost respect for the site and its integrity."CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIESThiesen also said the ship's discovery "begin[s] the process of closing this tragic chapter in our history."TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZHe went on, "To bring closure for the service and the families of Tampas lost crew is the greatest gift one can give.
