Southampton boss storms out of press conference after 'cheat' question following Middlesbrough play-off win
Tonda Eckert abruptly ended his post-match press conference after being asked whether he considered himself a cheat, with Southampton's communications director stepping in to demand that the manager be "shown some respect".The tense exchange came just moments after the Saints booked their place in the Championship play-off final in dramatic fashion.Shea Charles struck in the 118th minute of extra time at St Mary's to secure a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough and send the Saints to Wembley.Yet the result was immediately overshadowed by the growing controversy surrounding allegations that a Southampton staff member attempted to observe Middlesbrough training at Rockliffe Park ahead of the semi-final.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe English Football League has since charged Southampton with misconduct, and an independent hearing is expected to take place before the play-off final.Middlesbrough are believed to be seeking the strongest possible sanctions and feel Southampton should be removed from the competition if the allegations are proven.Against that backdrop, Eckert was repeatedly questioned about the issue after the final whistle. The Southampton boss insisted the club was treating the matter with the utmost seriousness, but maintained that he was unable to discuss the case while the investigation remains ongoing."It's not easy for me not to comment," he said."There's just nothing I can say at the moment because it's an ongoing investigation."We're taking the matter very seriously. I will say something, I just can't say it now."Asked whether Southampton had any clearer idea of what punishment they might face, Eckert replied: "No, I don't know."LATEST SPORTS NEWS:Rory McIlroy major injury concern after withdrawing from PGA Championship practice roundHalf-Indian footballer seeking 12million in damages after former coach called him 'curry muncher'British Olympics icon retires for new career after heartbreaking personal tragedyWhen pressed on why he could not elaborate, he added: "Because it's an ongoing investigation and nothing that I say is going to make an impact on that."The atmosphere in the room became markedly more confrontational when a reporter asked Eckert directly whether he was a cheat. Before the manager could answer, Southampton's communications director brought the press conference to an immediate close."Thank you very much, show some respect, that's all we ask. Well done," he said.Eckert then stood up and left without responding to the question. It was the second time in four days that Southampton's media team had intervened to cut short one of Eckert's press conferences.Earlier in the evening, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg had delivered an emotional 15-minute address in which he fought back tears and described the alleged conduct as "disgraceful".Hellberg said the episode had "broken his heart" and suggested it undermined the principles he believes the game should be built upon.Asked for his reaction to those comments, Eckert remained measured."I think everyone has the right to express their opinion," he said."He has done that. All I can say is I will say something, it's just not the moment now."Eckert also lamented the fact that the controversy has overshadowed what he described as two outstanding Championship encounters."I think this whole matter is overshadowing two games that are an advert for the Championship," he said."I would hope the way we speak about that gives credit to the quality of both games."Southampton will now turn their attentions towards the play-off final, with Hull lying in wait on May 23.
