France 2026 World Cup Roster: Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga Among Notable Omissions
France coach Didier Deschamps assembled a squad with formidable attacking talent for the World Cup and rewarded goalkeeper Robin Risser with a call-up for the showpiece tournament on Thursday following his breakthrough season. Risser, who plays for Lens, has been one of the revelations of the French league season and won the award for the best goalkeeper earlier this week. He played a big role in making Lens the second-best defense in Ligue 1 and was selected by Deschamps in a No. 3 role behind Mike Maignan and Brice Samba. "I'm full of pride, it's something incredible," Risser told broadcaster TF1. "I cant find the words. Its just extraordinary. It was one of my dreams." France is looking for a third World Cup title and is among the favorites for the event taking place from June 11-July 19 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. France has been drawn in Group I and will take on Senegal, Iraq and Norway during the group stage. Deschamps is gifted with an impressive attacking reservoir including Kylian Mbapp, Ballon dOr winner Ousmane Dembl, rising star Dsir Dou, Michael Olise, Rayan Cherki and Maghnes Akliouche. He also called up Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was preferred to Randal Kolo Muani in his 26-man list. The Tottenham striker had been a late addition to Frances previous World Cup squad four years ago. Kolo Muani scored a goal against Morocco in the semifinals and came close of becoming a national hero in the final before France lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout. Among those missing out are Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who lost his starting spot to Matvey Safonov at the club and has not played since the end of January. "The main criteria is sporting performance," Deschamps said. "I understand that Lucas Chevalier may be disappointed, but he hasnt played for several months anymore. At the time when he could have had some playing time, he didnt get any." Lens winger Florian Thauvin may also feel disappointed, having been one of the five players nominated for Ligue 1s player of the season. It will be Deschampss final tournament. He announced this year that he will stop after the World Cup, ending a successful reign which began in 2012 and saw France win the 2018 World Cup and reach the 2022 final. "Its a special feeling. I did many things today for the last time," he said. "The most important thing is today and tomorrow. We are focused on the World Cup." Former France great Zinedine Zidane is expected to take over, although he has not coached since ending his second spell in charge of Real Madrid, leading the Spanish giant to three Champions League and two La Liga titles. FRANCE 2026 WORLD CUP ROSTER Goalkeepers: Mike Maignan, Brice Samba, Robin Risser. Defenders: Lucas Digne, Malo Gusto, Lucas Hernandez, Tho Hernandez, Ibrahima Konat, Jules Kound, Maxence Lacroix, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano. Midfielders: N'Golo Kant, Manu Kon, Adrien Rabiot, Aurelien Tchouamni, Warren Zaire-Emery. Forwards: Maghnes Akliouche, Bradley Barcola, Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembl, Dsir Dou, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Kylian Mbapp, Michael Olise, Marcus Thuram. Reported by the Associated Press.

Steve Kerr was reportedly '95 percent' ready to retire before NBA play-in tournament
Steve Kerr will remain the head coach of the Golden State Warriors after signing a two-year extension with the team. That development would apparently be a surprise to Kerr a few weeks ago.The Warriors coach told ESPNs Wright Thompson he was 95 percent certain about retiring ahead of his teams play-in tournament game against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 15, reportedly saying I think its over the day before the game.Thompson breaks down Kerrs journey to that point in great detail, but a day later, Kerr had apparently changed his mind after the Warriors season-saving 126-121 win over the Clippers:An assistant with a stat sheet said they'd led for only four minutes and six seconds. Everyone laughed and tried to stay in the moment. Steve looked over at me and spoke quietly, almost a whisper."I'm not leaving," he said. The Warriors would go on to lose to the Phoenix Suns in the Wests final play-in game, ending their season outside the playoffs for the second time in three years. Kerr received widespread notice after cameras caught him telling Stephen Curry and Draymon Green 'I don't know what's going to happen next as the game ended.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentWhile Kerr had apparently decided he wanted to stay by that point, his contract with the Warriors was expiring. He acknowledged the possibility the Warriors move on from him after the game, in an offseason where major change is clearly needed. Instead, the Warriors kept him and gave him a contract that will reportedly see him remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA.Steve Kerr was reportedly ready to hang up his whistle.Eakin Howard via Getty ImagesIt remains unclear when the 60-year-old Kerr will actually retire. There was a revealing conversation on that front, though, as he and Thompson discussed former San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who officially stepped down last year after a debilitating stroke:For the past few years, Kerr has watched his mentor, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, struggle through this same decision. Pop once called Steve to tell him he'd finally decided to retire. Steve congratulated him on a Hall of Fame career. A week later Pop signed an extension with San Antonio. Popovich finally officially quit six weeks before our lunch, six months after a stroke diminished him physically. People who loved him had to show him the door, as gently as possible. That hurt Steve. He respects Popovich so much. He loved playing for him and coaching with him. He once told Gregg he was the finest man he'd ever known and thanked him for all he'd done for him. Pop smiled and said his feet were made of clay like everyone else's. Steve didn't believe it then. Now he does."I realized he couldn't do it," Kerr said. "He couldn't walk away."When asked how he would avoid a similar fate, Kerr apparently wasnt sure:"How am I gonna feel exactly a year from now? Maybe two years from now? Because the job itself is so addictive. ... You wanna trust yourself but also be suspicious of your own motives. You don't want to walk away too early but you don't want to walk away too late. And you worry about what your life is gonna feel like ...Whenever he does retire, he will likely be coaching a team significantly different from the one he helmed this season. The Warriors have been widely rumored to be gearing up for a superstar acquisition to maximize Currys final years with the team, a process which could see Draymond Green leave the organization.
