HOLLAND - Anthony Torres had waited his entire life to fight in front of his friends and family in his hometown.He finallygot that chance and took full advantage of it, using a wicked left hook to bring the crowd to its feet as he knocked out Kalamazoo's John Taylor in just 51 seconds in the final bout on the card in the Great Lakes Grudge Pro-Am on Saturday, May 16, at the Holland Civic Center. The win upped Torres's record to 3-0, with all three of his victories coming via knockout."He saw me coming to knock his head off, so I guess he decided to make a business decision, you know what I mean?," a smiling Torres said after the fight. "I came out (before the opening bell) and saw my family here to support me, so I had to show them what hard work does for you. There's a lot of pressure on you when everyone comes out to support you like this, but you can't let that get to you. "It's super special being able to do this in Holland. Doing this in front of my little brothers and my boys makes it just a different type of feeling. I've put in countless hours of training for one day and one moment. In that moment, you've gotta show up and make sure that you're on top of your game that night."Anthony's older brother Allen was scheduled to fight as well, but his opponent was forced to pull out of the bout due to injury.EJ Trevino, an eighth grader at West Ottawa's Harbor Lights Middle School, was victorious in one of the early amateur fights, as he won a split-decision over Clifford James in the 110-pound Intermediate weight class. Trevino has a mark of 6-2 since he started boxing last April."I was a little nervous, but also really excited before the fight because I knew I had to put on a show for the hometown with everybody that was here supporting me," Trevino said. "He had a lot more experience than me, so it was definitely one of my hardest fights. But I was able to win the first two rounds and it felt great to do this in front of mygrandparents (and other family members). I really hope they have more (shows) like this in Holland in the future."The final amateur fight featured ex-Holland High football standout Elroy Payne. The 29-year-old Payne, who only started boxing a little more than a year ago, was able to outlast Jaylen Pennyman to win by decision in the Elite 198-plus weight class. Payne has a 5-2 career record."I've got a couple offriends that box and I was talking to Anthony Torres about it when he said, 'Well, just come to Westside (Boxing Club)," Payne recalled. "I was nervous at first, but everybody was so welcoming and once I really got into it, it became an everyday thing."I've always been in a lot of street fights growing up, but this was a better way to do itwith getting into the ring. It's helped channel my anger and I leave everything in the ring every fight. I was the captain and more of a leader when I played football, but here I'm kind of learning more things as I go. I knew that I had (Pennyman) in the first round, so I just tried to get some body shots in there so he could feel it. He told me after thefight that he could feel the power from me. I was getting a little gassed as the fight went on and I also had some heartburn, so I was trying to get through that as well. But once you get into thering, you just let your hands go and all of your focus is on your opponent."I feel like I'm getting better with each and every fight. This was my first fight in Holland and it felt amazing to get a win in my hometown. Former India coach Rahul Dravid has said he is not fully aligned with Gautam Gambhirs idea of ending superstar culture in Indian cricket, stating that every sport needs its heroes and individual achievements also contribute to team success.Gambhir has often spoken about reducing the focus on individuals and giving more importance to collective success. Responding to the discussion, Dravid said players become superstars only after performing consistently and helping their teams win.Any sport needs its heroes, and I dont think people become heroes without performances. You cant capture the imagination of a nation if you dont deliver on the field, especially in India, where you get a lot of praise for what you do, but also a lot of brickbats. Theres a lot of scrutiny and constant focus on you. So to become a legend or a superstar in India means youve done a lot of things right, and in the process, youve also helped your team win, Dravid told Wisden on the Scoop podcast.Dravid, who played alongside players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag, said Indian cricket reached new levels during that period with several star players in the side.Speaking about Indias recent struggles in Test cricket under Gambhir, Dravid said replacing retired players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin would not be easy, but backed the team to recover.The passion to do well in red-ball cricket is definitely there. Weve had a couple of series where we havent performed as well as an Indian team, and that can happen. We are also missing a few key players, with some of the big names having recently retired Rohit, Virat and Ashwin and it is not easy to replace players like that. But Indian cricket remains very strong. I still believe the Indian team will be competitive in every format it plays. It may take a little time, but hopefully this season we will be able to turn things around, said Dravid.Dravid also said the current cricket calendar makes it difficult for players to balance formats, especially with the amount of white-ball cricket being played.Red-ball cricket is still very important. There are still players who want to play red-ball cricket. Among players, there is a strong sense that it is probably the toughest format of the game and something that brings a lot of personal satisfaction when you succeed in it. But there is also a lot of white-ball cricket being played, and we have to be realistic about that. Many of these players today are having to juggle multiple formats, and it is not always easy because they may not get as much time to prepare for red-ball cricket as my generation did. We effectively had fewer formats, and when I think about the preparation that went into some of the Test series I played, I feel the current players, not because they dont want to, but because of the volume of cricket, are sometimes unable to find that same balance.

College basketball isn't the same when it comes to scheduling as what we see with college football. The schedules don't take shape until the same season in which we get to see Ohio State do extreme athletic feats on the court, and that's what we are seeing this year as well. In fact, the schedule has yet to be officially set, but the Big Ten conference did unveil the home and away conference opponents to whet the appetite just a bit.We now know that Ohio State will keep the rivalry with Michigan alive with both home and away, and that it will also face Iowa and Penn State twice. In addition to that, Ohio State will play Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, UCLA, and USC once away from home, and welcome Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, Oregon, Rutgers, Washington, and Wisconsin to the Schott one time without a return trip.There's some give and take there, and it's hard to really know just how good some of the teams in the conference will be with all of the turnover, but regardless, it'll be a tough schedule because of how difficult the Big Ten Conference will likely be.B1G opponents make for big moments.
