St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol believes in the no shirt, no problem mantra.His club was boosted to a win over the Royals Friday night and again on Saturday by a group of college players in the right-field seats who took off and waved their shirts as they sang, chanted and drew others into the fray.Marmol loved it so much that he bought tickets for shirtless revelers this weekend.Last nights atmosphere was electric. Austin club baseball team, known as the Lumberjacks, was in nearby Alton, Illinois, for the National Club Baseball Division II World Series. The Cardinals offered tickets to the team, and 17 players attended.By the time Yohel Pozo hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning, the Lumberjacks had other fans and even the mascot Fredbird joining in on the ruckus.Whoever started that in right field, Ill do whatever I need to do to make sure they come every game, Marmol said Friday night. Because that was awesome. Not only them, but everybody that showed up today. That was a fun environment.The college players were back Saturday, when they shouted Marmol's name numerous times along with M-V-P! when Jordan Walker came to bat. Other fans in the stadium joined in on the fun.I heard it pretty clear, Marmol said. Welcome back to Busch. It was cool to see them back. The environment was awesome. We feed off that.Will he keep buying tickets?I'll go broke, Marmol quipped.The tarps off trend celebrating by taking a shirt off and waving it is not new to sports, but it was to Busch Stadium.Friday night's fans may have inadvertently created a new tradition.The fans sang soccer chants and shouted players names. The stadium organist, Dwayne Hilton, played accompanying music and got everyone involved.The party had grown to multiple sections by the 11th inning.It creates an environment where, its not only filling this place up, its making it a tough place for other teams to come in and play, Marmol said Friday. Ill sign up for that, any day.The Cardinals said Marmol bought right-field tickets for both games this weekend, and all of them were snapped up by Saturday afternoon.The Lumberjacks returned to Busch Stadium after a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Stony Brook earlier in the day.St. Louis beat Kansas City 4-2 on Saturday and the Cardinals rewarded the Lumberjacks, who were given swag bags of hats and shirts.They also were invited into the clubhouse and Marmol's office after the game. Several Cardinals posed for photos with them and some even gave away bats and baseballs.Masyn Winn, who is in his third full season, marveled at the energy in the stadium.I've never been in a playoff but this was a playoff atmosphere, Winn said. It's hard not to have fun when the fans are like that. We've got the best fans in the world but it seems like the younger generation makes it more like a college atmosphere. I think it's good for the game.Freshman pitcher Caleb Cummings, of League City, Texas, couldn't believe his good fortune. I don't even know what to say, Cummings said. It's the coolest thing that's ever happened to me. We're in the clubhouse. It's just crazy. The Cardinals are a great organization and led by a great manager.Cummings is a St. Louis fan now.I didn't think I'd ever switch. Alex Smalley kept his composure amid pure chaos Saturday in the PGA Championship, when he vanished from the leaderboard with a shaky start and when he surged back in front with sublime shots along the back nine at Aronimink Golf Club.His voice was calm and steady after signing for a 2-under 68 for a two-shot lead. He recognizes the stakes and the stage for someone who has yet to win on tour.Im trying to downplay that as much as I possibly can just to make it seem like any other golf tournament, because essentially thats all it really is, Smalley said.One look at the leaderboard would illustrate this PGA Championship is wildly different. Fourteen players had at least a share of the lead at some point Saturday. There was a seven-way tie for the lead with an hour left in the third round until Smalley's big finish.And he's still left with an All-Star cast of contenders 11 of them major champions within five shots, a list that includes Masters champion Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele.Ive never seen anything like this, Scheffler said when he finished with a 71, leaving him five shots behind. Ive never seen a leaderboard like this, this bunched up. Going into tomorrow, its quite literally anybodys tournament.Smalley at least gets a head start thanks to six birdies over his last 10 holes that helped him recover from the rough start to become the only player to break par in all three rounds of the tournament.His finishing kick kept this PGA Championship from having the largest 54-hole logjam in major championship history. Midway through the third round, 28 players were separated by two shots.Rahm and McIlroy were among those tied for the lead at one point. Schauffele and Patrick Reed were right behind. About the only one who failed to seize on the moment was Scheffler, who missed six putts inside 10 feet, four of them for birdie.Smalley's final birdie putt from just inside 15 feet put him at 6-under 204, two shots ahead of the group that includes Rahm and three ahead of McIlroy, Schauffele and Reed. The challenge can also be kind of fun if you do well. Thats probably the reason why the leaderboard is so bunched up, Rahm said. And its going to be such a good Sunday tomorrow. It starts with Smalley, a 29-year-old who spent three years in the Wannamaker dormitory at Duke, the name on the heavy PGA Championship trophy to be awarded Sunday. He is playing only his fifth major, never cracking the top 20. He's also winless on the PGA Tour, but he showed up for his first major of the year off three straight finishes in the top 20.Key to his round was a 15-foot par putt on the sixth hole to stop the slide. No one shot better than 65, though Chris Kirk had a double bogey on the 18th for one of those rounds. Justin Rose was outside the cut line on Friday until holing a chip from deep rough for eagle on his last hole to make it with one shot to spare. It's frustrating to us, but at the same time, it creates a hell of an entertaining championship.
