WWW.KSAT.COMHeartbreak for Hearts as Celtic crowned Scottish Premiership championIt's now a hat trick of last-day heartbreaks across six decades for arguably the unluckiest club in European soccer.Heart of Midlothian was denied a first Scottish league title since 1960 on Saturday after losing a showdown game 3-1 at Celtic, which had to win and got the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute.Add 2026 to 1986 and 1965 on the list of cruel ways fans of the unheralded Edinburgh club have seen title dreams dashed in the final minutes of the season.Daizen Maeda, who is going to the World Cup with Japan, scored the crucial goal at Celtic Park that ultimately ensured the Glasgow giant would be crowned champion for the fifth year in a row and 14th time in 15 seasons. The goal was confirmed by video review to annul a raised offside flag.Celtic extended its lead with an empty-net goal in the eighth and last minute of stoppage time when Hearts goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow went to the other end in search of a title-winning equalizer. Callum Osmand putting the ball into the unguarded goal sparked wild celebrations from Celtic's fans, and hundreds invaded the field. Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland was reportedly punched by a Celtic fan as he tried to leave the field with the game ended before playing the full amount of stoppage time.Hearts later said it utterly condemns the shameful scenes at Celtic Park this afternoon which have, once again, embarrassed Scottish football. Shanklands header in the 43rd gave Hearts a lead in a game it needed only to draw. Celtic leveled in first-half stoppage time when Arne Engels slotted a penalty awarded for handball. That penalty in midweekThe buildup to one of the most eagerly anticipated games in Scottish soccer history was dominated by the hugely controversial penalty that gave Celtic a key win on Wednesday. It changed the balance of the title race and gave Celtic an easier path to its record 56th Scottish league title.Deep into stoppage time in the second-to-last round, Celtic was tied at Motherwell 2-2. Then a penalty was awarded on video review for what the officials eventually judged was handball by Motherwell's Sam Nicholson.Video evidence was inconclusive, to say the least, and furiously debated since late Wednesday when Celtic forward Kelechi Iheanacho scored from the spot in the 99th minute.Soccer great Gary Lineker later called it possibly the worst VAR call he ever saw, and Hearts coach Derek McInnes said it was "actually quite disgusting.Had Celtic not won at Motherwell, the gap to Hearts would be three points. Celtic would then have needed to win by three clear goals on Saturday to edge the tiebreaker on goal difference.Instead, Celtic needed just a win by any score.Hearts' cruel runCeltic and its city rival Rangers have won every Scottish league title since Alex Fergusons Aberdeen was champion in 1985. That four-decade run started with severe trauma for Hearts fans.In 1986, just as in this season, a surprising Hearts led the standings for months and needed just a draw on the last day.In both cruel climaxes, Hearts held that draw in its hands beyond the 80th minute. Forty years ago, Hearts conceded two late goals to Dundee substitute Albert Kidd, and Celtic won the title on goal difference by winning its game 5-0.Older fans recall another Hearts-breaker in 1965. Hosting second-placed Kilmarnock, Hearts knew a 2-0 loss was the result that could deny the title on the now-defunct tiebreaker of goal average. The result? 2-0 to Kilmarnock. The latest 3-1 loss at Celtic added an unwanted chapter in the history of a club now majority owned by fans, with a fascinating minority owner: Tony Bloom, the professional gambler, who also owns English Premier League club Brighton. Bloom's data analytics firm found transfer market gems for Hearts, including the league player of the year Cludio Braga.Celtic's season of turmoilCeltic's league title came in a chaotic season that saw two coaches leave: Brendan Rodgers, in open conflict with the club's board, and Wilfried Nancy, who lasted just weeks after being hired from Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.Long-time chairman Peter Lawwell left in December citing intolerable levels of abuse and threats from fans toward him and his family.Club icon Martin ONeill was twice appointed as interim manager and, at the age of 74, this was his fourth league title with the team coming 22 years after his previous one. Celtic can do the double next weekend, in the Scottish Cup final against second-tier Dunfermline.Hearts condemns violenceHearts said it was talking with Scottish police about the field invasion by Celtic fans.Reports of serious physical and verbal abuse towards our players and staff, both on the pitch and elsewhere, are deeply disturbing, the club said. We expect the strongest action possible to be taken by the footballing authorities in the interests of protecting the safety of players and supporters, and the integrity of our game. The Hearts delegation quickly left Celtic's stadium and players were still dressed in game uniforms when they got off the team bus about 95 kilometers (60 miles) away at their Tynecastle Park home.___AP Sports Writer James Robson in London contributed.___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 56 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
WWW.CLICK2HOUSTON.COMRory McIlroy surges into PGA Championship contention with a 66 at AroniminkRory McIlroy smashed his drive on the 397-yard sixth hole and landed a beauty on the green to the delight of a roaring Aronimink crowd. He made a birdie and kept a second straight major victory firmly in sight on a day in which several players made big moves up the leaderboard in more favorable conditions. The pin placements, the course, nothing bothered McIlroy at Aronimink as he charged back from 105th at the end of Round 1 of the PGA Championship all the way to a share of the lead until he bogeyed 17, finishing at 3 under Saturday, a day after he complained about the setup at Aronimink Golf Club."I feel like I still did enough to think I have a chance going into tomorrow," McIlroy said.Who would count out McIlroy? He won the Masters and is trying to join Ben Hogan (1953), Arnold Palmer (1960), Jack Nicklaus (1972), Tiger Woods (2002) and Jordan Spieth (2015) as the only players to win the first two majors of the year in the modern rotation. The No. 2 player in the world, McIlroy was buried on the leaderboard Thursday after he shot a 74. Only four players in history have ever won a major championship after being 50th or worse at the end of the first round. His Round 3 was a different story. He had six birdies, 10 pars and two bogeys and shot 66.Ive climbed my way out of that hole a little bit, which is, Im proud of myself for doing that, but theres one more day left, and I feel like Im again, if I can depending on what the guys do, be close enough to the lead, I feel like Ive still got a good chance, McIlroy said. Two long days at Aronimink produced the highest 36-hole score to par to lead the PGA Championship in 14 years. The 15 players separated by two shots made it the biggest logjam going into a weekend at a major since 2002. At one point Saturday afternoon, there were 28 players separated by two shots. McIlroy griped about the setup at Aronimink one day earlier. He cushioned his criticism a bit on Saturday.McIlroy might be angling for his next job as much as he is trying to win his next major. McIlroy, the only European with the career Grand Slam, noted last year he would unwind from a round by watching The Devil Wears Prada. That caught the attention of the filmmakers and earned him an invite to cameo in the sequel. His Saturday night plan?To watch the thrilling conclusion of the Batman movie, The Dark Knight. On their way downJustin Thomas, the PGA winner in 2017 and 2022, grabbed a share of the lead at 4 under with a birdie on the sixth hole.He followed with four straight bogeys to drop off the leaderboard and would up tied for 31st.Other players who lost ground to the field included top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Cam Young.Scheffler followed an opening 3-under 67 with consecutive rounds of 1 over and was at 2-over par for the championship. He dropped 14 places and slipped into a tie for 23rd.Spieth, needing a PGA victory complete the career Grand Slam, had an even-par 70, tumbling 14 spots on the leaderboard and needing a big day on his 10th attempt to secure his missing major.Young, a winner this season at The Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship, started the third round at 1 under and was at even-par 210, slipping 22 spots and heading into the final round in a 10-way tie for 31st in the pursuit of his first major victory.Players make the most of favorable conditionsThe wind, cold and rain of the first two rounds largely gave way to warmer weather that may have helped with all the birdies.Chris Kirk had eight including five birdies in six holes on the front nine on his way to a 65 and Michael Kim birdied six of his first seven holes. Justin Rose, who won at Aronimink in the 2010 AT&T National, shot a 5-under 65 to move up the leaderboard and well within striking distance of the lead. Rose noted subtle differences in the course from one day earlier when he shot a 73 and was in jeopardy of missing the cut before holing out on 18 to make an eagle. He said the pins were just a bit more predictable.Ive heard Scottie say its probably the hardest set of pins hed seen," Rose said. "That didnt strike me as that being the case, but yeah, when you think about it, they were incredibly challenging.___AP Sports Writer Bob Lentz contributed to this report.___AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 54 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
WWW.GBNEWS.COMPolice injured as 'serious disorder' erupts among marauding Celtic fans after title winPolice officers were left injured after "serious disorder" broke out among Celtic fans in Glasgow last night.Approximately 3,000 supporters had congregated in the Trongate on Saturday evening to revel in their Premiership heroics.Fans were spotted scaling traffic lights and other street furniture - with riot police bussed in to disperse the crowds as the evening went on.Police Scotland confirmed bottles and other missiles were hurled at officers who had entered the crowd to respond to a medical emergency. The streets were largely cleared of people by around 7.30pm, though piles of litter remained.Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland said most fans had heeded appeals to behave responsibly - but laid into those who caused carnage."Once again, we have seen unacceptable levels of violence and anti-social behaviour and Police Scotland's officers have been left to deal with the consequences," he said."Being assaulted is not part of the job and regrettably a number of them were injured," he said."The levels of criminal behaviour witnessed, in particular the hostility directed towards our officers, is simply unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. "Those involved should be in no doubt that they will be identified and arrested."Multiple arrests were made during the operation.Mr Sutherland has now demanded urgent talks with Celtic, Scottish football authorities and Glasgow City Council to prevent a repeat of Saturday's chaos.Police Scotland had earlier accused Celtic of failing to make plans for official celebrations in the event they won the league.A senior officer said policing plans for potential Celtic celebrations had led to rest days being cancelled.CROWD TROUBLE - READ MORE:Man, 19, arrested after Scottish referee's personal details leaked following controversial Celtic penaltyMet Police secure first EVER charge for tailgating at a football match during Arsenal v Man City at WembleyFootball players pepper-sprayed by riot police in chaotic end to matchGlasgow City Council, however, said it did not recognise that description of the club's approach.Several roads surrounding the Trongate were closed as police braced for gatherings on the streets.Celtic had appealed to supporters to stay away from the city centre after Saturday's match. The Hoops had started the day needing a win to boot Hearts out of first and win the Premiership - and did so with a goal in the 87th minute and another in the very last to win 3-1.Thousands of Celtic supporters proceeded to invade the pitch after the final goal, forcing Hearts players to be escorted from the field.Hearts released a statement describing the scenes as "shameful" following the match."Reports of serious physical and verbal abuse towards our players and staff, both on the pitch and elsewhere, are deeply disturbing," the Edinburgh club said."We are investigating this fully and are in dialogue with Police Scotland.""We will make no further comment at this time other than to say that it is completely unacceptable that our players and staff were put in that situation."The pitch invasion caused a chaotic end and nobody seemed to know whether or not the match had been brought to a finish," the club added.Police Scotland confirmed they were liaising with Hearts to determine whether any players were assaulted during the pitch invasion. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 57 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
