Olympic Games could come to north of England in 2040s under Labour plan
A bid to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the north of England in the 2040s is to enter an initial assessment phase, the government has announced. The government has commissioned UK Sport to conduct the assessment as part of its ambition to drive regeneration in towns and cities through sport. The assessment will consider costs, socio-economic benefits and the chances of success. If it did succeed, it would be the first Games staged in Britain since London 2012.Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: London 2012 showed what the Olympics can do for our country. It inspired a generation through sport, attracted huge investment and showed the best of Britain to the world. But while the north of England has driven so much sporting excellence, no matter the talent we produce, the sporting moments we create and the world-class events we attract for too long we have been told the Olympics is simply too big and too important to be hosted in the North. Not any more. Its time the Olympics came north and we showed what we can offer to the world. The Olympic rings hang from Tower Bridge during the London 2012 Olympics (Getty)I couldnt be more pleased to announce that were starting the firing gun on a long overdue vote of confidence in the North. The findings of the initial assessment will determine whether a more detailed technical feasibility study is undertaken to examine costs, benefits and viability of hosting the Games.Any final decision on if and when a future bid might take place would be for the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association to take.Manchester was unsuccessful in a 1993 bid to stage the 2000 Olympic Games, which were ultimately awarded to Sydney.Documents released from the National Archive included a postmortem of why the bid had failed, including a comment from Damian Green, a former Conservative MP but at the time a policy adviser to then prime minister John Major, who said the reason Manchester had lost out was obvious. No one in their right mind would spend three weeks in Manchester rather than Sydney, he said.Reflecting on the comments after their public release in 2019, Mr Green said: Im glad I was wrong and that Manchester did eventually succeed in a bid and held a memorably successful Games (the 2002 Commonwealth Games).Manchester has become a lesson in urban renewal, and I have learned not to be cynical.

American golfing star smashes ball into fans as cameraman nearly taken out in PGA Championship
American golfing star Wyndham Clark nearly hit fans at the PGA Championship, clipping his ball off the lens of a cameraman. The golfer hooked a recovery shot during his second round at Aronimink Golf Club, sending his ball straight into where the nearby spectators were standing.Fans could be heard checking on nearby spectators who were inches away from being clipped by Clark's stray ball.Fortunately for those very nearby towards where the American was taking his shot, nobody was hit or hurt.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayClark missed the cut by just one stroke, finishing his first couple of rounds on five-over-par.Several notable names missed the cut, including Tyrell Hatton, Bob MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood.Other big names eliminated include Victor Hovland, US Open champion JJ Spaun and Bryson DeChambeau, who struggled to find any form across his two rounds.Alex Smalley leads the way heading into the final round, with a two-shot advantage at the top.LATEST SPORTS NEWSPrince William receives special gift to mark 20 years as FA PresidentManchester United reach agreement to appoint Michael Carrick as club's managerRory McIlroy makes feelings clear on 'not great' PGA Championship setupRyder Cup stars Jon Rahm and Ludvig Aberg are gathered at the top of the leaderboard, along with Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy.A staggering 21 players are within four shots of his lead, with the field wide open for anyone to win the second major of the year.Heading into the final round, Smalley said: "Anybody who wants to play golf for a living dreams of winning on the PGA Tour when they're younger."I recognise that I have an opportunity to do that tomorrow. I recognise that it's on a stage that's a little bit larger than most other tour events."I'm trying to downplay that as much as I possibly can just to make it seem like any other golf tournament."McIlroy, aiming to win back-to-back majors and his seventh overall, fought his way back into contention by shooting a 66, placing him just one stroke off the lead when he finished his round.Rahm credited the tournament for the "showmanship" on display with the tightly-packed group. He said of the course: "As hard as it is to play, the challenge can also be kind of fun if you do well."That's probably the reason why the leaderboard is so bunched up, and it's going to be such a good Sunday tomorrow. "So in that sense, showmanship-wise, they've done a great job."Defending champion Scottie Scheffler remains in the chasing pack, saying ahead of the final round: "Going into tomorrow, it's quite literally anybody's tournament. There's a lot of guys that have a chance."Somebody is going to have a great round, and I'm going to make sure to do my best to give myself my the best shot at being the one who has a great round."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
