SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUCLA Baseball Dominates Big Ten End-of-Season AwardsUCLA baseball has been on a dominant run all season long, becoming the first NCAA Division I team to be ranked No. 1 for an entire regular season in D1Baseball and Baseball America polls. On Tuesday, that dominance was rewarded in the Big Ten end-of-season conference awards. The Bruins claimed a conference-leading nine total selections across the First, Second, and Third Teams along with the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards. Junior shortstop Roch Cholowsky earned the Big Ten Player of the Year Award for the second season in a row. He is the first player in UCLA history to win the award twice in a career and the third player in Big Ten history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards.Cholowsky, who led the Big Ten with 21 home runs, is the No. 1 ranked prospect entering the 2026 MLB DraftJun 17, 2025; Omaha, Neb, USA; UCLA Bruins shortstop Roch Cholowsky (1) throws to first base against the Arkansas Razorbacks during the third inning at Charles Schwab Field. This is the third time in his career he has earned the conference Coach of the Year award, with his first two being in the Pac-12 in 2013 and 2019. Savage led the Bruins to a program-record 48 regular season wins and the longest conference winning streak in Big Ten history. Savage and the Bruins will begin the Big Ten Tournament on May 22. WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMYankees Ace Gerrit Cole Returning From Tommy John Surgery On Friday Against RaysGerrit Cole is scheduled to return from Tommy John surgery Friday night and make his season debut for the New York Yankees against Tampa Bay. Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced the plan Tuesday before his team's game against Toronto. Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, hasn't pitched in the major leagues since October 2024 in Game 5 of the World Series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. "Been a long time," Boone said. "We're thrilled to get him back." Even after fellow Yankees ace Max Fried landed on the 15-day injured list last weekend with a left elbow bone bruise, Boone said the team still intended to have Cole make a seventh minor league rehabilitation start this week before rejoining the big league rotation. But after the 35-year-old right-hander threw 86 pitches over 5 1/3 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against the Syracuse Mets on Saturday night, Cole and the Yankees changed course. "When we all looked at it and just considered all the variables, it checked all the boxes," Cole said. He will start the series opener at Yankee Stadium against the AL East rival Rays, who swept three games from New York last month in Florida and entered Tuesday with the top record in the majors at 31-15. "I expect it to be intense. Tough matchup. Lot of balls in play. Control the running game," Cole said. "Lot of pressure from the other team." SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJames Wood gets Nationals on the board with inside-the-park Grand Slam vs. MetsJames Wood sprints around third base en route to an inside-the-park grand slam.IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect / REUTERSThis weeks series between the Washington Nationals and New York Mets has seen some wild offensive action. On Monday, the Mets exploded for 10 runs in the 12th inning to surge ahead for a 16-7 win. The 10 runs were the most in a single extra-innings frame in MLB since 1983.On Tuesday, the Mets got their scoring started early, with five runs in the first two innings. The Nationals responded to cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the second with what else an inside-the-park grand slam. 2-out double leads to wild grand slamThe inning started strong enough for New Yorks rookie standout starter, Nolan McLean, who got the first two outs without allowing a baserunner. Jorbit Vivas then got the Nationals on base with a two-out double. McLean then hit Drew Millas with a pitch to put two runners on, and nine-hole hitter Nasim Nuez loaded the bases with an infield single.Wood then made McLean pay for putting the bottom third of the Washington order on base. He launched a 1-1 sweeper deep to left-center field. It didnt have quite enough juice to clear the wall. But left fielder Nick Morabito making his MLB debut couldnt hang on to the ball with his leaping effort at the wall.JAMES WOOD INSIDE-THE-PARK GRAND SLAM! pic.twitter.com/8P0K4jhApZ MLB (@MLB) May 20, 2026The ball bounced off his glove and caromed into center field. Tyrone Taylor, who also gave chase from center field, apparently didnt see the ball bounce away and just stared at Morabito after he fell to the warning track.By the time the broadcast returned its attention to the outfield, both were giving chase as the ball continued to roll away. By the time Taylor reached it and made his throw, three runs had scored and Wood was rounding third. Wood slid in safely well before the off-target relay throw approached home. And Wood cut New Yorks lead to 5-4 with a Little League grand slam, his 13th home run of the season. The inside-the-park grand slam, remarkably, wasnt the first this season. Rookie St. Cardinals standout JJ Wetherholt hit one in a win over the San Diego Padres earlier in May.As for Morabito, he didnt let the misplay in the outfield in his second MLB inning keep him down. He followed up with a sensational catch in very next inning on a foul ball into the front row of the third base stands.Nick Morabito makes an UNREAL catch in his MLB debut (MLB x @AceHardware) pic.twitter.com/kaLJl3kI1b MLB (@MLB) May 20, 2026Unfortunately for the Mets, the catch allowed Daylen Lile to tag up from third base on the one-out catch.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 87 Views 0 previzualizare
