Josef Newgarden Suffers Foot Injury After Hard Indy 500 Crash
Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Speedway, Ind.) Josef Newgarden spun out on a restart during Sunday's Indianapolis 500, smacked the outside wall of the 2.5-mile track and suffered a minor foot injury, as our Bob Pockrass reported. On Lap 125 of 200, Newgarden, behind the wheel of his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet, seemingly cut it too close in Turn 4, hit the rumble strip and spun out. His car was destroyed as he hit the SAFER barrier hard, knocking him out of the race. Newgarden suffered a minor foot injury and was icing it, but he was released from the care center later in the day. "We were going for it," Newgarden said in a release from Chevrolet. "Obviously, we didnt know how the weather was going to affect the second half of the race. It looked like there could be heavy rain before the end of it, and I wanted to put us [in] the best possible position no matter how it finished. "The Shell Fuel Rewards Chevy was a work in progress for much of the first half, but it was starting to come to us. Just hate that we couldnt finish it off." A couple of years ago, Newgarden won back-to-back Indianapolis 500s (2023, 2024), but after Sunday's race, he now hasn't finished two straight after dealing with a mechanical issue last year. Felix Rosenqvist ultimately won the 110th Running of the Indy 500 on Sunday with a photo finish over runner-up David Malukas, Newgarden's Penske teammate.

Oregon State baseball left out as NCAA regional host site
Corvallis and Oregon State baseball will not host an NCAA regional tournament in 2026.The Beavers (43-12) finished the regular season as the No. 7 team in the country according to D1Baseball and USA Today's coaches' poll, but a plethora of factors contributed to the snub. For regionals, a Division I baseball committee selects the top 16 seeds in the nation to host four-team regional tournaments. Ratings percentage index, or RPI, strength of schedule and several more season-long on- and off-field details contribute to the decision. When regionals begin May 29, Oregon State will be on the road. Schools awarded a host site include Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Florida State, Kansas, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Southern Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA and West Virginia. All 64 teams and where they will be competing on the road to Omaha will be announced on live television 9 a.m. PST Monday, May 25 on ESPN.Oregon State is projected to be joining in-state rivals Oregon in Eugene as the second seed in that regional. Baseball America projects that the Oregon schools will be joined by UTSA and Washington State, while D1Baseball predicts Tarleton and Milwaukee making the hike up to the Pacific Northwest. 2026 DI Baseball Regional Host Sites https://t.co/4UMGre4vOLThe 16 sites are listed in alphabetical order.#RoadToOmahapic.twitter.com/fZn8Ism7HE NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) May 25, 2026Why didn't Oregon State get a regional host bid?Without a conference, Oregon State competed as an independent program this spring. The Beavers are the only team in the top 25 that were independent, and it left the team without a conference tournament and a chance to boost RPI at the end of the season. Teams on the cusp of the top 16 with hosting a regional in mind, such as Oregon, West Virginia, Kansas and more, were able to extend their respective strength of schedules after the regular season. Oregon, for example, collected a few additional wins and made it to the Big 10 championship game May 24 to boost its resume. Oregon State also suffered a handful of losses toward the back end of the season that did no favors.Late defeats to Air Force, UTRGV and CSUN proved critical in the perception of the Beavers' 43-win regular season and were certainly remembered by the decision makers with the NCAA. In addition to the on-field losses, the committee is known to take any and all factors into account, including injuries. Oregon State suffered one of the most prominent injuries in the nation. Ace pitcher Dax Whitney, who was a unanimous mid-season national pitcher of the year candidate, suffered a season-ending elbow injury that changed the momentum and status of Oregon State's national prowess. The Beavers still boast one of the clear-cut top pitching staffs in the nation, but the attraction of the projected No. 1 pick in the 2027 MLB Draft shifted the committee's eyes elsewhere. Oregon State hosted a regional in 2025 but spent the prior three postseasons on the road. The last time the Beavers were on the road, in Lexington in 2024, they won the regional.
