Deshaun Watson Dismisses Public Perception, Shifts Focus to Browns QB Competition
Deshaun Watson knows he cant change the public perception of him or the results of his first four seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Thats why the embattled 10-year veteran quarterback is focusing on winning back the Browns' starting job, something that seemed unfathomable a year ago, when Watson was recovering from tearing Achilles tendon twice and it appeared he would never play for Cleveland again. "At the end of the day, I cant control what people support. I think thats their own opinion," Watson said Wednesday, speaking to reporters for the first time in nearly two years. "I think that all I can do is just put out the best person I am, showcase who I am as a person, as a player, as a teammate, and what I represent as an individual. So outside of that, I cant focus on what the outside is saying." If Watson is named the starter for the Browns' opener on Sept. 13 at Jacksonville, it will be 693 days between starts. His last game was in Week 7 of the 2024 season against the Cincinnati Bengals, when he ruptured his right Achilles tendon during the second quarter on a draw play. Watson tore the tendon again two months later and was declared out for the 2025 season. Owner Jimmy Haslam said during last years owners meetings that the Browns "took a big swing and miss" when they sent three first-round picks to Houston for Watson in 2022 and signed him to a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million deal that could end up as the worst contract in NFL history. Despite Haslams proclamation, Watson still believed he would get another chance after conversations with the front office, Haslam and his wife and co-owner, Dee. "The relationship is great. Dee and Jimmy were at my wedding. We talk all the time. He calls me whenever," Watson said. Watson and Sanders Remain in Tight Competition For The Starting Job Watson and Shedeur Sanders have appeared evenly matched during offseason workouts. Coach Todd Monken had hoped to name a starter before training camp, but said, "Both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start." Watson likes Monkens system because it resembles what he played under during his five seasons with the Houston Texans from 2017 to 2021. "Its a lot of responsibility on the quarterback, and I think thats what I had in Houston with Bill OBrien. It was pretty much that Tom Brady tree and everything relied on the quarterback operation," Watson said. "Hes given a lot of responsibility to us, and youve got to own the responsibilities, situations, and decisions on the field. Thats something Im very comfortable with." When asked about the quarterback competition, Sanders downplayed any indication that there is one. "I think the way yall look at things is different than how we look at things," Sanders said. "Yall look at it as like a competition. Thats really nothing Im just focused on. Im focused on developing as a player, like doing everything, getting as comfortable as I can in the offense in the scheme, and playing with that confidence I had." Now a Married Man, Watson Says He Has Changed His Life No matter what happens during training camp and the upcoming season, Watson said hes in a great place mentally. He credits his wife, Jilly Anais, whom he married last July, for the change in outlook. "I think the biggest thing is, Im an introvert now, so I dont really get into all the outside stuff and noise as I used to," he said. "I used to be a social person back in the day and kind of more open, but now Im just kind of watching my surroundings and my moves and just kind of focus on the things that I need to focus on." Watsons biggest focus going into the season is playing all 17 games. In 2022, he missed the first 11 games because of a league suspension resulting from his alleged sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. He made six starts in 2023 before a season-ending shoulder injury and started seven last year before the Achilles tendon injury. Watson is 9-10 with Cleveland with 19 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions and an 80.7 passer rating. "I cant look in the past. I cant look in the rear-view mirror. Obviously, you know those situations, and you have those experiences, but at the same time, youve got to keep pushing forward. If I keep stepping forward and standing 10 toes down, then Ill be good," he said. Reporting by the Associated Press.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Jose Siri hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning, Mike Trout and Logan OHoppe homered, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros 3-2 on Wednesday night. Angels starter Reid Detmers retired his first 15 batters before Shay Whitcomb homered leading off the sixth. Chase Silseth replaced Detmers to begin the eighth and gave up a leadoff homer to Cam Smith that tied it 2-all. Houston nearly took the lead in the ninth. But the Angels challenged the safe call at home plate and it was overturned following a replay review.Bryan Abreu (2-3) came on for the Astros in the 10th and pinch-hitter Donovan Walton hit a leadoff single that moved automatic runner Nick Madrigal from second base to third. Trout launched his 15th homer to open the scoring in the first, and O'Hoppe's drive with two outs in the fifth made it 2-0. Peter Lambert allowed two runs and five hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for Houston. Detmers permitted only one hit over seven innings. He struck out nine and walked none. Inside the numbers: An unbelievable Game 4 between Knicks and Spurs, with tons of numbers to note
The San Antonio Spurs put together one of the best first halves in NBA Finals history. And then the New York Knicks pulled off the best comeback that the leagues title round has ever seen.Down 29, the Knicks rallied to beat the Spurs 107-106 on Wednesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. It was the biggest comeback in finals history ... and a whole lot of other things happened in Game 4 as well, some that swung the pendulum completely San Antonios way and some that wound up letting New York do its share of rewriting the NBA history book as well.A look inside the numbers:A 29-point comebackAbove all else, there was this: The biggest comeback in the finals.San Antonio 81, New York 52 was the score with 9:40 left in the third quarter. No team had ever rallied from 24 points down in a finals game and won; the Knicks outscored the Spurs 55-25 over the final 21 1/2 minutes to pull this off.Boston trailed the Los Angeles Lakers by 24 points in Game 4 of the 2008 finals, before winning 97-91 another 30-point swing, just like what the Knicks pulled off on Wednesday. There even were records within the record, such as: The Knicks were down 27 at the half. The biggest halftime deficit successfully overcome in a finals game was 21 points (41-20) by the Baltimore Bullets over the Philadelphia Warriors on April 13, 1948. The Knicks were down 15 going into the fourth, tying the biggest end-of-three-quarters deficit ever overcome in a finals game. Chicago trailed Portland 79-64 on June 14, 1992.Only a 1-point leadThe Knicks never led by more than one point and won the first time any team has done that this season. The last time it happened, in any game, regular season or playoffs? Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Finals, when Indiana beat Oklahoma City 111-110.Down 20 (or more), againThere had been three comebacks from 20-point fourth-quarter deficits in the last 30 years of playoff basketball ... until three weeks ago, that is.The Knicks were down by 22 in the fourth and beat Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. They were down by 20 in Game 4 against the Spurs and won again. So, the Knicks in that situation in these playoffs: 2-0.The rest of the NBA in that situation in the last 30 postseasons: 3-751.2 with 33Jalen Brunson scored 36 points and OG Anunoby had 33 for the Knicks. Anunoby had the tip-in that ended up being the winning basket for the Knicks, but two teammates having that many points in a finals game also put that duo in title-series lore. They became the 10th set of teammates with at least 33 points apiece in a finals game.Elgin Baylor and Jerry West did it six times for the Lakers from 1962 through 1966. Kyrie Irving and LeBron James did it twice for Cleveland against Golden State, once in 2016 and again in 2017.The other duos to do it: Philadelphias Hal Green and Chet Walker (1967); the Lakers West and Wilt Chamberlain (1970); the Lakers Magic Johnson and Jamaal Wilkes (1980); the Lakers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy (1985); Portlands Clyde Drexler and Jerome Kersey (1990); the Lakers Kobe Bryant and Shaquille ONeal (2002); and Golden States Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant (2017).27-point halftime leadSan Antonio led 76-49 at the half, the 27-point margin tying the third-largest in finals history.(Technically, that was the biggest halftime lead on the road, but more on that in a moment.)Boston led the Los Angeles Lakers by 30 (79-49) at the half of Game 1 of the 1985 finals. The Lakers led Miami by 28 (64-36) at the half of Game 6 of the 2020 finals in the bubble; the Heat was the designated home team for that game, but it was played in the neutral site of Walt Disney World. The Knicks also had a 27-point lead at the half of a finals game in 1970; they led the Lakers 69-42 at the break of Game 7 that year.76 points at the halfSan Antonio had 76 points at halftime, the most by a road team in an NBA Finals game and tied for the third-most by any team in the title series. The other first-half scoring outputs that reached that number: Cleveland scored 86 against Golden State in Game 4 of the 2017 finals; Boston scored 79 against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the 1985 finals; and the Celtics also scored 76 against the St. Louis Hawks in Game 1 of the 1960 finals. The most by a road team in the first half of a finals game, before Wednesday, was a 73-point first half by the Lakers over the Celtics in Game 2 of the 1962 finals.14 3s in a halfSan Antonio made 14 3-pointers in the first half, an NBA Finals record for any half. The previous record was 13 by Cleveland in the first half against Golden State on June 9, 2017.The Spurs also made eight 3s in the second quarter, one shy of the NBA Finals record for most in a quarter. Golden State made nine in the first quarter against Cleveland on June 7, 2017 and Boston made nine in the fourth quarter against the Warriors on June 2, 2022.The other teams with eight in a quarter: Phoenix against Milwaukee in the 2021 finals and Dallas against Boston in the 2024 finals.1:02Only 62 seconds into the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson or more specifically, whoever makes the call in the second row of the bench area and relays that information wanted a timeout called to review a foul that was called on San Antonios Victor Wembanyama.Great move by the review caller. Turns out, New Yorks Karl-Anthony Towns was pinning Wembanyamas arm, the call got overturned, Towns went to the bench with his second foul of the game and that helped set the tone for the Spurs huge opening half.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA

Taylor Swift attends Knicks' record-breaking rally over Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals
Taylor Swift attended Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, the arena that has gotten a lot of attention recently as the possible location for her upcoming wedding to Travis Kelce.Swift wore a blue T-shirt with Stevie Knicks printed in orange lettering and was seated courtside on Wednesday night next to Ben Stiller. She attended along with singers Este and Alana Haim, who also had Knicks-related references on their shirts: Knickole Kidman and Knickleback. They were joined midway through by third Haim sister Daniella, and the quartet witnessed the biggest comeback in finals history as the Knicks rallied from a 29-point deficit to win 107-106 on OG Anunoby's tip-in with 1.2 seconds left.Swift jumped around in celebration, waving a rally towel after leaving the court for the bowels of the Garden. She may be back soon.Less than a year after their August engagement announcement, reports of Swift and Kelces impending nuptials have reached a crescendo. TMZ and the New York Posts Page Six recently started insisting Swift and Kelce will marry at the Garden in early July, despite their close connections to everywhere from Kansas City, Missouri, and Nashville, Tennessee, to Cleveland and Rhode Island.Swift and the Haim sisters were among several celebrities in the house, including Tate McRae and Hailey Bieber, and regulars like Timothe Chalamet and Spike Lee. Swift and Kelce attended Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Knicks and Cavaliers, not far from where the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is from in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. This is the latest sporting event for Swift, who along with Kelce also attended a game during the NHL's Stanley Cup Final a year ago in Sunrise, Florida. The Madison Square Garden wedding reports remain unconfirmed, and a spokesperson for Swift has not responded to The Associated Press requests for comment about the wedding plans. The arenas calendar of upcoming events lists nothing from June 29-July 6.Swift first performed at Madison Square Garden in 2009, during her Fearless tour, and she celebrated her 30th birthday at the arena 10 years later as part of iHeartRadios Jingle Ball. She has since graduated to larger venues when she swings through the New York area; her Eras tour shows were just across the river at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.___AP Entertainment Editor Mallika Sen contributed to this report.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
