WWW.GBNEWS.COMBen Stokes feels the wrath of ECB chief Rob Key with booze ban consideredRob Key has declined to guarantee Ben Stokes will remain England Test captain following the all-rounder's breach of team curfew rules last weekend. The ECB's managing director of men's cricket addressed the controversy publicly for the first time on Thursday, revealing his profound disappointment at the incident."Can Ben captain again? I think we've just got to let that play out," Key stated at The Oval. The 35-year-old Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were involved in a late-night confrontation with Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa after exceeding a midnight deadline.Key described experiencing "disbelief, then anger" upon learning of events, adding he remains unsettled by what occurred. When pressed on whether dismissing Stokes remained possible, Key responded: "I'm not saying that. At this point in time, it has not crossed my mind to get that far ahead."The ECB chief revealed he is contemplating an unprecedented total prohibition on alcohol for players representing England.Key questioned whether existing protocols had been sufficiently robust, suggesting even post-match celebrations might need to change."Even when they win a game of cricket, is it now a time when there's just no alcohol at any time and at any stage?" he said. The managing director emphasised that squad members must now earn back confidence from supporters."The players now have to show the public that they can be trusted. At this point it's hard to say they can," Key admitted. However, he stopped short of condemning the team entirely, insisting: "I don't think they've become a national embarrassment."Key acknowledged that Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum represent one of England's most accomplished leadership partnerships. Both Stokes and Atkinson have been excluded from the second Test squad following their breach of team rules after England's victory at Lord's.The matter is currently being examined by the ECB and has additionally been passed to the independent Cricket Regulator for review.Key disclosed that Atkinson claimed ignorance of the curfew's existence, though the managing director appeared unsympathetic to this defence."The protocols were brought in in January, they were also sent to their representatives," Key noted, adding that multiple players went out that evening yet only two failed to return by the deadline.Regarding Stokes' wellbeing, Key indicated the situation had been "traumatic" for the captain."Ben has been through a range of emotions, as you would do in this situation," he explained, urging patience before any major decisions are taken.Joe Root has been drafted in to lead England for the Oval encounter with New Zealand, which begins on Wednesday. The former captain was chosen ahead of vice-captain Harry Brook, whose own nightclub altercation with a bouncer in Wellington last November counted against him."We just thought this was too big a job at this stage for Harry to take on," Key acknowledged.Brook's previous disciplinary matter was "certainly one of the reasons" behind the decision, though Key rejected suggestions that Root was the only "responsible adult" available. The managing director praised Root's immediate willingness to step up during a difficult period."Ultimately, when English cricket's in a hole, Joe Root is the man that we ask to dig us out of it, whether that's on the field or off the field," Key said. "When I spoke to him about whether he would consider this, he didn't hesitate."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 12 Views 0 previzualizare -
