USA's Unforgettable World Cup Opener Turned Dreams Into Reality
LOS ANGELES STADIUM How do you celebrate scoring twice in your World Cup debut and helping your team open the tournament with a 4-1 victory? "You know, watch some Netflix," USA striker Folarin Balogun joked after recording half the goals in the U.S. mens national teams rout over Paraguay on Friday. Balogun called it "a dreamy night," and he couldnt have described it better. Thats because the Americans hardly could have scripted a more perfect start to this home World Cup. Even Balogun, who had envisioned what this moment might feel like, said the real thing measured up. "Yeah," he said, flashing a smile. "It was pretty similar." There were 70,492 hopeful fans who battled Los Angeles traffic in order to support this squad. They were decked out in their patriotic best, had paid a premium to be there and maybe expected to witness a bit of history. While the team has always had a loyal following, this World Cup presents an opportunity to expand that base. The Americans tournament opener drew everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry to Bill Gates and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And those in the stands, along with the millions watching from home, were rewarded with one of the most flat-out fun and entertaining U.S. performances in recent memory. "For everyone who says soccer is boring, well, you had five goals today," midfielder Weston McKennie, who had dyed part of his hair red, white and blue, told reporters after the game. "So hopefully they might not say that anymore, and theyll feel the electricity in the stadium and the passion by viewing the fans who have been with us for years and for decades. "One thing thats gonna change soccer is having the World Cup here, because I think a lot of people will be touched by the passion that a lot of fans have and the extent that they go through to be here." Whether you arrived as a diehard fan or not, the first 45 minutes sucked you in. The U.S. put on a show, scoring three goals before halftime matching its entire output from four matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the seventh minute, Alex Freeman sparked the attack, McKennie made a dizzying cut away from a defender, and Christian Pulisic split two defenders near the box before slipping the ball back to McKennie. His attempted pass toward Balogun took a fortunate deflection off Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla and rolled into the goal to give the U.S. an early 1-0 lead. The pro-American crowd erupted, overflowing with optimism and celebration as beer rained down from the upper deck. "It meant everything for us," Pulisic said of the visible and vocal fan support. "I mean, a half like that, to go as it did and to have the fans really excited about our performance, it felt amazing." Balogun added two more stellar goals before halftime one that was shot directly into the upper left corner. And then Gio Reyna, whose debut World Cup four years ago was marred by drama, scored a beautiful fourth and final goal for good measure with the outside of his right foot. For years, doubt has surrounded this team. Much of it has been self-inflicted, stemming from past underwhelming World Cup performances, disappointing results at other major tournaments and the perception that they were wasting their golden generation of talent. This summers tournament has been viewed as a chance to change the stigma. To further grow soccer in this country, ignite passion in fans, unite people. Ever since Mauricio Pochettino took over as manager in September 2024, hes repeatedly said, "Why not us?" That mantra has resonated with players and become part of the fabric of this team. It showed against Paraguay. This was the start the squad needed. The Americans were sharp, intense and relentlessly attack-minded for more than 90 minutes. "We have to believe," Balogun said. "You can't do anything if you don't believe in yourself." After the match, Pochettino hugged each of his players before leaving the pitch. He told them he was proud of the result, but more than that, of their performance. Now, the expectation will be to keep winning in style. The Americans continue Group D play against Australia in Seattle on June 19 before returning to L.A. to play Trkiye on June 25. "We can take a deep breath," Pulisic said of getting the first match out of the way. "But theres still so much we want to accomplish in this tournament."

Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar handed maiden ODI caps as India opt to field in 25-over contest
India handed maiden ODI caps to Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar ahead of their clash against Afghanistan, with the two youngsters marking a special milestone in their careers.Dubey received his cap from KL Rahul, while India captain Shubman Gill presented Gurnoor Brar with his debut cap before the start of play. After earlier concerns over the weather, conditions improved significantly and the skies cleared in time for the match. The contest would be reduced to 25 overs per side, setting up what promises to be an intriguing encounter. Under the revised playing conditions, each team can use a maximum of five bowlers, with each bowler allowed to deliver up to five overs. The batting powerplay will last for the first five overs of each innings. At the toss, Gill called correctly and elected to field first, citing the overcast conditions and the possibility of early assistance for the seamers."We will bowl first. It's a bit overcast, so the bowlers might get some help. Looks like a good surface, good wicket to bat on, could be something early on for the pacers. It's all about trying different combinations to see what works for us. We're playing around 15-20 ODIs before the World Cup, so it's about trying things. We're going with two debutants. Jaiswal, Prince and Kuldeep miss out," Gill said.Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted that his side would also have preferred to bowl first but remained confident about putting up a strong performance."We wanted to bowl first, but it's not in our hands; we need to start well with the bat. We did very well in the recent past. This is the first time we're playing India in their home conditions, we're excited and hopefully we'll do well. There are three seamers and three spinners, one seamer is an all-rounder," Shahidi said. With two debutants in the Indian XI, favourable weather conditions returning and a shortened 25-over format adding an extra layer of unpredictability, the stage is set for an absorbing contest.Teams:Afghanistan (Playing XI): Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Rashid Khan, Mohammad Saleem Safi, AM Ghazanfar, Zia Ur Rahman SharifiIndia (Playing XI): Shubman Gill(c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan(w), Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna 131705397

Flesh-eating screwworm found in Texas calf as ranchers brace for possible spread
The New World Screwworm (NWS) a parasitic fly that eats the flesh of livestock and other warm-blooded animals has arrived in South Texas. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed on June 3 that NWS larvae had been identified in a three-week-old calfs umbilical area in Zavala County, Texas. As of June 11, federal officials had confirmed six total cases, Fox7 Austin reported.According to the USDA, "NWS is a serious pest that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and less commonly, people and birds. NWS larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing serious damage to livestock and economic losses."CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIESScrewworms dont make meat unsafe to eat, but they do threaten to raise beef prices that are already at a record high. The USDA is led by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins. On May 11, 2025, she announced "the suspension of live cattle, horse and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border due to the continued and rapid northward spread of NWS in Mexico."Models projected the NWS would enter the U.S. in 2025, "but thanks to the hard work across the entire Trump administration and our industry, state and local partners, we were able to buy time for this moment," said Dudley Hoskins, USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs."USDA invested heavily in the tools needed to eliminate NWS ever since cases started increasing in Central America and Mexico," Hoskins said. "The United States has defeated this pest before, and we will do it again."The USDA announced that "an APHIS strike team is already on-site in Texas." The agency said it has mounted a "rapid, efficient response" that involves releasing sterile male flies and establishing a movement control zone to quarantine livestock.TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZBeginning in the 1920s and 1930s, USDA scientists began NWS eradication efforts. Part of the solution was the Screwworm Adult Suppression System (SWASS), which lures flies to a bait mixture that contains insecticides that kill them before they can reproduce. Since female flies only reproduce once, they also released sterile male flies so the females would mate and produce no offspring. In 1966, Agricultural Research Magazine declared, "The screwworm has been eradicated from the United States."Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has been critical of the USDAs response to the new NWS outbreak."For months, the screwworm has advanced rapidly through Mexico in spite of the USDAs existing gameplan," Miller said in a statement. "Even though billions of sterile flies have been dispersed by USDA, the screwworm has still advanced over 1,100 miles from southern Mexico to Texas, and USDA has missed an important component. Now that it appears the first screwworm has arrived in Texas, the consequences of that decision are now staring us in the face."Miller said he "personally provided research and the SWASS bait formula to Rollins and her team on three separate occasions while the screwworm continued its northward trek to Texas."He added, "Instead of using every available tool, USDA moved too slowly and relied solely on a partial solution that takes years to fully implement."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERMiller asked President Trump to take control of the NWS response."Cut through the bureaucracy, deploy SWASS immediately and throw every available federal resource at this threat before it becomes a full-blown agricultural disaster," he urged the president. As Texas Land Commissioner, Dawn Buckingham, M.D., oversees more than 13 million acres of state land, including roughly three-quarters of a million acres of grazing and hunting leases managed by the Texas General Land Office. Her office sent a letter to Rollins and Texas governor Greg Abbott offering full access to the lands to support the governments response to "the active, escalating threat of the New World Screwworm.""This is a big deal," Buckingham told Fox News Digital. "It's going to be a real problem, and it doesn't just impact our cattle, but it impacts all of the wild animals as well as our dogs and our cats. We want to be sure that we get these insects out of our state."The Land Commission has offered access to property to house workers, grow sterile flies, set up traps, whatever is needed, Buckingham said.According to Buckingham, the Land Commission met with South Texas ranchers "many months ago" when they observed screwworm flies marching up through Central America and Mexico. She said the pests have been slowly working their way back after they were pushed down to South America several decades ago."[Screwworms] come and go with the world population being so mobile," Buckingham said. "It's very easy for insects to travel, whether they jump on a fruit truck or they come on animals or whether they've infected a person. Diseases move much more quickly these days than they used to."Buckingham added that, "The good news is we've got medication to treat [screwworms], and we know how to stop the propagation of the insect, so we should be able to get it under pretty good control. It's not reinventing the wheel. We fought them before. We'll fight them successfully again."
