Record seaweed invasion leaves beachgoers gagging as fumes raise health fears
A record amount of sargassum seaweed has been washing ashore across South Florida, frustrating beachgoers and creating a growing challenge for coastal communities. The brown seaweed has piled up along beaches throughout the region, leaving behind large mounds that many visitors say are affecting their beach experience.Scientists at the University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Lab reported that sargassum levels reached a record high for the month of May, according to FOX Weather.BEACH BACTERIA WARNINGS PLAGUE FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND PLANS NATIONWIDEResearchers estimate that at least 4% of the ocean's surface is currently covered by floating mats and clusters of the seaweed with levels expected to increase further throughout June. While the seaweed itself can be unsightly, many residents say the odor it produces is an even bigger problem. As sargassum decomposes, it releases hydrogen sulfide gas, creating a smell often compared to rotten eggs, according to the Florida Department of Health.Health officials say the gas can irritate the eyes, nose and throat and may be especially troublesome for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERResidents who have discussed the issue online described the smell as one of the most unpleasant aspects of the ongoing seaweed buildup."The smell is so noxious where I live from all the decomposing sargassum," one Reddit user wrote."Its really bad."Others said the odor has become so recognizable that even photos of the seaweed trigger memories of it."I can literally SMELL these photos," another commenter wrote.Another beachgoer said the seaweed made spending time in the water less enjoyable than usual."I was at the beach today, and honestly it was annoying," the commenter wrote. "You can't enjoy the water."Images shared online showed thick bands of seaweed stretching across portions of the shoreline.TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ"Pictures don't really do it justice," one Reddit user wrote. Kane Williamson replaced by India whitewash hero in New Zealand squad for second Test vs England
New Zealand have called up Will Young to their Test squad after Kane Williamson retired from all international cricket on Friday during the ongoing series against England.Young is expected to arrive in England on Sunday and will join the squad for the remaining two Tests, the team announced on Saturday. The call-up comes after Williamson decided to step away from international cricket despite the series being underway. The 35-year-old scored 0 and 18 in New Zealand's defeat to England at Lord's last week and subsequently made himself unavailable for the rest of the series, which resumes on Wednesday at The Oval.Williamson then announced his retirement from all international cricket.Young played a key role in New Zealand's 3-0 Test series win in India in 2024. He was New Zealand's second-highest run-scorer in that series, scoring 244 runs in three Tests at an average of 48.80.Meanwhile, explaining his decision, Williamson said:I've thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it's become clear now is the right time.Williamson leaves the game as New Zealand's leading run-scorer in Tests, men's ODI World Cups and T20 World Cups, as well as across all three formats combined since making his debut in 2010.Across formats, he scored 19,346 runs and hit 48 centuries. In Test cricket, Williamson made 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06. His record includes 33 centuries, one of them coming on debut against India in Ahmedabad, and six double centuries. His highest score was 251 against the West Indies in 2020.Williamson captained New Zealand in 206 of his 378 international matches. During his tenure, New Zealand won the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021 and reached the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup. 131711013Reflecting on his career, Williamson said:I've always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I've given it my all in every match Ive played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn't be right. It's a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart. I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There's a huge amount of talent, and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team.New Zealand will continue the England series without Williamson, with Young now set to join the squad ahead of the second Test at The Oval.

James Harden is arrested in Houston on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle
Cleveland Cavaliers player James Harden was arrested on Saturday in Houston on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a motor vehicle, according to the Harris County District Clerks Office.Harden was arrested at 3:41 a.m. and booked just before 5 a.m., then posted $100 bond and was released from police custody, according to charging documents, which said he had a handgun in plain view that was not in a holster. His arraignment is scheduled for June 22, according to the clerks office website. Harden is listed as a Houston resident in court documents. The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information, the team said in a statement. We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.A message sent to Hardens representatives from The Associated Press seeking comment was not immediately returned.Harden, 36, just finished his 17th NBA season and has the right to exercise a $42.3 million option to return to the Cavaliers next season. He indicated when Clevelands playoff run ended with a loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals that he would like to remain with the club, which would suggest hes willing to forgo the option in favor of a longer contract with the Cavaliers.Harden is an 11-time All-Star and an eight-time All-NBA selection who earned MVP honors in the 2017-18 season while playing for the Houston Rockets.___AP Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds contributed to this report.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
