Chris Waddle shares what will be the 'hardest part' for England at World Cup
Former England winger Chris Waddle shared what he thinks will be the hardest thing the Three Lions to deal with during the World Cup.Waddle, who played 62 times for England, featured at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups with the Three Lions reaching the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.Speaking exclusively to GB News through NewBettingOffers, Waddle explained the challenges England will have to overcome. He said: "The hardest part of this tournament for the England players is going to be the weather. I played at Mexico 86, and it was really tough.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour Say"There's the heat, but also the length of the grass and the altitude to consider too. People may watch on TV back home and wonder why players are struggling, but for teams going to Mexico expecting to win, they are in for a shock."There will be water breaks, which I'm sure the players will be desperate for. There are no questions over the players' fitness, but the heat will affect them. "Thomas Tuchel is going to need to use his substitutes wisely, because many players will not be able to complete a full 90 minutes, especially in midfield."So the teams that have success will be the ones that can break quickly, or who are technically very good and can dominate possession. Sides of that nature will be the ones that go the furthest. England are ok in possession, but definitely not one of the best teams at the tournament in that regard."LATEST SPORTS NEWSWorld Cup 2026 day six: All the latest as England suffer huge injury setback ahead of Croatia matchRory McIlroy hits out at LIV Golf for creating 'false economy' in golfGhana launch legal fight after Thomas Partey denied World Cup visaEngland kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia, with Waddle noting that they will need the very best of Harry Kane to succeed. He told the People's Channel: "He's on fire at the moment and has so much confidence coming off the back of another fantastic season with Bayern Munich - he just keeps on scoring. "He's the player that you always turn to when you need a goal, and he showed again against New Zealand that he is the man to step up and make the difference."Tuchel has Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney as a back-up, but without Kane, I don't see how England can score enough goals to win the tournament."Several players are playing at their first World Cups, including Elliot Anderson and Nico O'Reilly, which comes with an immense amount of pressure.Waddle noted the benefits players have from being "together as a squad for many weeks", sharing an anecdote from Italy in 1990.He said: "At Italia '90, we were together for seven weeks, and I shared a room with Paul Gascoigne, so I was only getting around three hours' sleep a night!"Everything will feel completely new for the debutants, but I'm looking forward to seeing how they get on."My advice would be to go out and play their natural game. Listen to Tuchel, understand what he wants you to do and the system to play, but when you receive the ball, do what you think is right and can have the biggest positive impact on the game. "Ultimately, that's why they've been selected in the first place."The debutants should express themselves and show why they deserve to be at the World Cup."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

Streetballers And Paris Suburbs: How France Transcended World Cup Talent
France the current FIFA World Cup favorites have been the center of discussion when it comes to the game of soccer, and it became an impressive statistic in the tournament. 54 players come from the suburbs of Paris enough to roster two full World Cup squads and France is the birthplace of 98 players in the World Cup, which makes up 7.9% of players. France is in a group stage with Iraq, Senegal and Norway and are looking to make another run at a World Cup trophy after their 2022 loss to Argentina. Headlined by stars Kylian Mbapp and Ousmane Dembl, France's talent stems beyond their national team. The country is also home to players like Spain's Aymeric Laporte and Algeria's Riyad Mahrez. Algeria even has goalkeeper Luca Zidane, the son of French 1998 World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane, on its squad. One of France's most decorated players includes FOX Sports analyst Thierry Henry, who's appeared in four World Cups, as well as their 1998 win as their top-goal scorer. A product of the Paris suburbs himself, Henry weighed in what it means to watch his hometown represent multiple teams at the World Cup and how players learned their foundational skills on the streets. "I'm going to be extra proud with that one because do you know what it means to us that I'm from the south of Paris? Obviously, the impact, the street culture, the way we are in Paris. You learn how to protect the ball, skills. We challenge each other" Henry said ahead of France's World Cup opener. "Playing on concrete, learning how to protect the ball, that demeanor that you have, that French demeanor when you arrive on the field, especially from the suburbs of Paris, we have that demeanor. It is a thing." FOX Sports' Zlatan Ibrahimovi spent four years in Paris playing for Paris Saint-Germain, and attested to the mass talent that the city and the country produce. "I mean, I'm just impressed. The waves of talent they produce and like, like, Thierry said, they're street ballers," Ibrahimovi said. "They bring that to the pitch, and it's acceptable... And imagine the players that didn't make it to the World Cup. They could also be in the World Cup and dominate in the World Cup."

Why didnt VAR award France a penalty for trip on Mbappe in World Cup clash with Senegal?
Kylian Mbappe was convinced he had won a penalty in Frances 2026 World Cup opener against Senegal in New Jersey on Tuesday, only to be left flabbergasted as Australian referee Alireza Faghani gave a corner and then changed his decision to a goal-kick after watching replays.Mbappe dribbled into the box where Senegals Sadio Mane slid in to make a tackle. As Mane reached Mbappe, the France captain touched the ball away from his opponent and then collapsed in a heap under Manes challenge. Mbappe could only laugh as the referee waved away French appeals and awarded a corner. Follow France v Senegal live!Referee Faghani was sent to review the decision on his pitchside monitor by his VAR, and as he stepped back on to the pitch, French players and coaching staff began to celebrate. But instead of awarding a penalty, Faghani announced: The attacker initiated the contact. To rub salt into French wounds, the corner was overturned after replays clearly showed that Mane made no contact with the ball. Sadio Mane slides in on Kylian Mbappe without touching the ball (Reuters)Mane was not penalised for the challenge (Reuters)Pundits were aghast at the decision. That is just rubbish, said Pat Nevin on BBC Sport. Utter nonsense. No chance at all. How can he [Mbappe] have initiated the contact? The most nonsensical line I have ever heard.I dont get it, added Alan Shearer. You can see the lunge from Mane and his left leg catches Mbappe. How can Mbappe initiate contact if he is in front of him? Its bizarre, it really is.I cant support the referees decision to be honest, said Darren Cann, an assistant referee at the 2010 World Cup final. For me it is a clear penalty. My phone has blown up with messages from several of the worlds best referees who also cant understand why a penalty wasnt given. For me it is very, very clear and I am extremely surprised he did not point to the spot after a correct VAR review.France were not complaining for long. Minutes later, Mbappe latched on to a cleverly disguised throughball by Michael Olise and turned home a first-time finish to put France into the lead. And substitute Bradley Barcola added a second to put the French two goals clear.
