PGA Tour and USGA issue key statement day before US Open
The PGA Tour and the USGA have joined the R&A and the DP World Tour in issuing a key statement, the day before the US Open gets underway.Golfing stars tee off for day one on Thursday, with Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and other big names in action.Ahead of the tournament, the governing bodies have all released a joint statement raising concern about "distance increases and the long-term consequences of failing to address this consistent trend".The group is all in agreement that golf faces a distance issue, with players hitting the ball farther off the tee.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe bodies all voiced their opinions about how golf balls "are tested via the Overall Distance Standard (ODS)" and if they achieve the desired result. The USGA previously said it may not implement a new ODS, which would reduce elite driving distances by 15 yards, until 2030.Both the USGA and the R&A noted the new testing rules would apply to elite players in 2028, impacting all golfers in 2030.American golfing star Cameron Young shared he had been playing a ball which fit the rollback changes at the PGA Championship, without seeing a loss in distance.LATEST SPORTS NEWSHarry Maguire told off for speaking out on World Cup snubbingInside Tommy Fleetwood's quest for a first major championship and why the US Open can be his timeWayne Rooney's new look astonishes football fans during BBC World Cup coverageHe said: "Obviously, there is no conforming list. I wasn't aware that it would have [conformed]. I suppose I read something that said it passed that test, but I wasn't aware of that until very recently. "So, at no point was that a consideration. It was just really me trying to optimise my golf, and it's the ball that seems to work the best for me."The four bodies shared that they are open to "reconsidering alternative approaches that may more materially impact the pace of future distance increases, while minimising disruption to the overall golf market".Part of the statement read: "The governing bodies will work closely with key stakeholders - including the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour and their respective members - to review, test and implement options that have a meaningful impact on distance at the elite level."These efforts will ensure the elite game does not become too one-dimensional while continuing to emphasise the importance of shot-making."There will be no change to the ODS testing approach until January 2030 while these options are evaluated."The USGA, The R&A, PGA TOUR and DP World Tour are confident in the path forward and committed to working collaboratively, and with other key stakeholders, to ensure the long-term health of the game."The US Open gets underway on Thursday at Shinnecock Hills in New York.McIlroy appears to be relishing in the challenge of the competition, saying: "If everything is going the way everyone wants it in terms of weather, set-up, I think it's the best championship test in the country."It tests all aspects of the game: driving, iron play, you need to have your wits about you on the greens. It's a lot of strategy, thoughtfulness. This course demands so much patience - it can really lure you into taking on things that you probably shouldn't."If you can get your ball to the middle of the greens and just putt to the corners wherever the flags are, that's never a bad strategy. The strategy I've employed at the US Open over the past few years has been a lot like that and that's served me well."It hasn't got me the trophy but it's got me pretty close a few years. I definitely feel I've become a lot better of a US Open player by trying to really stay patient throughout the week and not taking on too much."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

Most Men's World Cup Goals All Time: Where Messi, Mbapp Rank In History
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbapp two of the biggest stars in the world combined for five goals on the same day in Match Day 6 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With his first career World Cup hat trick, Messi tied Miroslav Klose for the most goals in men's World Cup history with 16 while also setting the record as the oldest player (38) to record a hat trick, passing Cristiano Ronaldo. Mbapp recorded a brace, moving him up to 14 goals all time at the World Cup, tied for the fourth-most ever. Both of these stars will look to break the record this tournament. With that being said, here are the players with the most goals in World Cup history. Let's take a look. T-1. Miroslave Klose (Germany): 16 Playing in four straight World Cups from 2002 to 2014, Klose scored in all four editions of the World Cups he participated in and capped it off by lifting the trophy in 2016. Messi is also Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer with 120 to his name and additionally holds the record for most World Cup matches played with 27. 3. Ronaldo (Brazil): 15 Many consider Ronaldo the greatest striker of all-time, as he scored more than 350 goals in club play and 62 for Brazil. Fifteen of those international goals came in the World Cup, en route to winning the Golden Ball in the 1998 tournament and the Golden Boot in 2002. T-4. Kylian Mbapp (France): 14 Mbapp has scored an outrageous 14 goals in just 15 World Cup matches in his career. As a 19-year-old in 2018, he scored four goals for France, helping it win its first title since 1998, and then he scored eight goals in 2022 most notably netting the second hat trick in a World Cup final ever against Argentina. T-4. Gerd Mller (Germany): 14 Arguably the greatest Bundesliga goalscorer of all-time, Mller scored an astonishing 10 goals in 1970 and then another four in 1974 in Germany's title run. He was Germany's all-time leading goalscorer with 68 goals until Klose passed him. 6. Just Fontaine (France): 13 Fontaine holds one of the most incredible stats in World Cup history, as all 13 of his goals came in the 1958 edition of the tournament the record for most goals scored by a player at a single World Cup. It's been 68 years since he set that record, and no one has come close to breaking it. 7. Pel (Brazil): 12 The great Pel scored in all four of his World Cup appearances from 1958 to 1970 and won three titles with Brazil in that span. Most notably, he scored in the final in 1958, as the youngest to ever do so at just 17 years old. T-8. Jrgen Klinsmann (Germany): 11 Klinsmann scored in three straight World Cups from 1990 to 1998, helping Germany lift the trophy in 1990. His 47 goals for Germany overall are tied for the fourth-most in national team history. T-8. Sndor Kocsis (Hungary): 11 Kocsis's 11 goals all came in 1954, when his Hungary side scored 27 in five matches before falling in the final to West Germany. He's the only player to hit double digits in one World Cup besides Fontaine and Mller. Seven players have exactly 10 goals at the World Cup: Helmut Rahn (Germany), Gary Lineker (England), Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina), Tefilo Cubillas (Peru), Thomas Mller (Germany) and Grzegorz Lato (Poland).
