Scottie Scheffler makes feelings clear on brutal US Open conditions amid career Grand Slam bid
Scottie Scheffler has admitted Shinnecock Hills was a "good battle" after surviving a punishing opening day at the US Open, with many of golf's biggest names struggling to cope with fierce winds and one of the sport's toughest venues.Concerns had been raised before the tournament that Shinnecock could descend into chaos for a third successive US Open after controversial editions in 2004 and 2018.Forecasts predicted gusts of more than 40mph on Thursday, prompting US Open organisers to take preventative measures in an effort to avoid a repeat of the scenes eight years ago when players and pundits criticised the setup. The USGA slowed down the greens and watered them between the morning and afternoon sessions to reduce the risk of balls rolling away uncontrollably.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayThe decision appeared to pay off.Although conditions remained extremely demanding, play continued uninterrupted and only six players from the morning wave managed rounds in the 60s.World No 1 Scheffler was among those left battling for survival, carding a two-over-par 72 as he continued his bid to complete the career Grand Slam."It felt like a day where a lot of good shots were going to get punished," Scheffler said."You had to be hitting a great shot if you wanted to avoid a punishment. I think good shots would put you in some tough spots."Overall, it was a really challenging day."If you told me when I was staring at my par putt on nine that I would post two over today, I would definitely have taken it."It was a good battle."LATEST SPORTS NEWS:World Cup star suffers injury so horrific that ITV refuse to show replaysTV presenter quits and apologises after falsely claiming Lionel Messi's father had diedEngland national anthem row takes fresh twist with Thomas Tuchel 'unlikely' to be appeased by rule changeScheffler's playing partner JJ Spaun also endured some bad luck, seeing a tee shot on a par three briefly hold the putting surface before being blown into a bunker by the wind.Several players experienced balls moving on greens, though conditions never became severe enough for officials to suspend play.Former Open champion Padraig Harrington praised tournament organisers for striking the right balance."Obviously it got quite windy, but you couldn't have asked for a better set-up," he said."There obviously was a couple of tough holes, but all the tees were up. The pins were as easy as can be. Greens were soft."So it was a tough test but very, very fair."Tommy Fleetwood agreed, adding: "I think they did an amazing job of making it as fair as you could possibly make a test of golf today, with the conditions that they had."Dense fog delayed play by two hours during the morning, meaning the opening round could not be completed before darkness.Rory McIlroy, who famously opened with an 80 when the US Open was last held at Shinnecock in 2018, fared much better this time around with a one-under-par 69 despite bogeying his final two holes."The greens are pretty slow and quite receptive," McIlroy said."I think they need to be. It's a challenging golf course already, and you put 30-mile-an-hour winds on top of it, it tests the best players in the world pretty well."I think they were prudent with the course set-up."McIlroy added: "Went out with the mindset that pars were going to be good and if you could pick up a couple of birdies here and there, that's always a bonus."Just minimising the mistakes - I did that for the most part."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

Alpes 2030: emblems inspired by mountains and light unveiled
The two emblems of the Alpes 2030 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games, inspired by a mountain revealed by light, were unveiled on Thursday.Together, the two emblems symbolise the mountains and light of the French Alps, forming a unified identity, as explained by Edgar Grospiron, president of the Alpes 2030 Organising Committee."The same mountain will unite the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030, he said. That is why our two emblems were conceived as complementary expressions of the same vision. Together, they embody our ambition: to give Olympism and Paralympism the same place, strength and visibility".Grospiron also stressed France's rich Olympic hosting heritage, pointing to Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968, Albertville 1992 and, most recently, Paris 2024 as shining examples of the country's ability to stage world-class events."We know how to organise big events. We've proven it. We have the expertise, the people and the infrastructure," he said, adding that the region's mountains are already among Europe's most popular winter tourism destinations. The newly unveiled emblems were also warmly received by French winter sports athletes. Double Olympic snowboard cross medallist Chlo Trespeuch praised their clean design:"I find them very stylish, simple, minimalist and timeless," she said. "They also have a nice story. Those two emblems complement each other, between the Olympics and Paralympics. I can't wait to wear them!".Meanwhile, double Olympic cross-country skiing medallist Richard Jouve said the designs capture the spirit of the host region."Those emblems represent our mountains well. The design and colours are really nice. It's a great way to kick off the Games!"."Different yet inseparable, they form a whole: one of the Winter Games united by a shared vision, a shared energy, a shared territory and shared values," the Organising Committee said. Two emblems were chosen one for the Olympic Winter Games and one for the Paralympic Winter Games to represent the identity of the next Winter Games in France. They are built around three key elements.Rays of light reveal the contours of the landscape. They open up a perspective, the promise of clarity, warmth and renewal.Mountain peaks embody the field of play of Alpes 2030: Alpine sports, challenge, raw beauty, pushing limits, and awe.The point of convergence represents coming together. Where the rays meet, the summit appears. The emblems of the Alpes 2030 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games feature a range of colours inspired by two elements of mountainous regions: light and ice.Midnight blue and azure blue evoke altitude, depth, stability and the horizon.Red and pink alpenglow recall moments when sunlight warms the mountain peaks and brings vibrancy to the landscape. They represent the energy of the event, as well as the spirit of sport and enthusiasm.*As part of this launch, a new Games signature has officially been adopted: Alpes 2030. This new naming replaces Alpes Franaises 2030 / French Alps 2030.
