Cristiano Ronaldo at centre of explosive Portugal row as talk of 'civil war' rocks World Cup bid
Cristiano Ronaldo has found himself at the centre of an explosive Portugal row after warnings of a possible "civil war" emerged following his country's disappointing World Cup draw with DR Congo.Portugal's opening Group K match was overshadowed by criticism of Ronaldo's display, fierce social media backlash aimed at several team-mates and claims that divisions could begin to emerge within the camp. The 41-year-old failed to register a shot on target during the 1-1 stalemate despite Roberto Martinez keeping his captain on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.Martinez has since come under pressure for refusing to substitute Ronaldo, with some pundits suggesting the Portugal boss is reluctant to upset his veteran forward.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour SayBut the fallout has gone beyond criticism of the manager.Ronaldo's supporters have accused several Portugal players of deliberately failing to supply the striker against opponents ranked 40 places below them by FIFA.The accusations have been amplified by the former Manchester United star's sister, Katia Aveiro, who criticised Portugal's approach in possession. She wrote: "Magically, they forgot how to: pass the ball; win it back; launch counter-attacks. The game became all about passing backwards in midfield strange World Cup. Very strange."Prominent Portuguese journalist Vitor Pinto has now warned that the reaction to Ronaldo's subdued display risks creating major tensions within the squad."It demonstrates the risk of a civil war within the national team," he said."There is a reaction to any criticism levelled at Cristiano Ronaldo, and that is where much of the polarisation comes from."I do not believe there was any boycott against Cristiano Ronaldo let's make that clear from the start.LATEST SPORTS NEWS:World Cup star suffers injury so horrific that ITV refuse to show replaysTV presenter quits and apologises after falsely claiming Lionel Messi's father had diedEngland national anthem row takes fresh twist with Thomas Tuchel 'unlikely' to be appeased by rule change"I repeat, there was no organised boycott against Cristiano Ronaldo within the national team."However, it is true that Portugal did not communicate effectively with their centre-forward, nor did they employ a strategy in which the striker created space for others to break through the defence and finish."Since the match, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Pedro Neto have reportedly seen their social media accounts inundated with comments accusing them of intentionally freezing Ronaldo out.Neves also angered some supporters after insisting the five-time Ballon d'Or winner should be treated like any other member of the squad."We know what Cristiano has done for us, for our national team, and for the world of football," he said."But at this moment, he and we know that he is no different."He is just another player here to help. He is no different from the others. He is here to contribute, just like all of us."Ronaldo has also been criticised by several former players.Thierry Henry accused him of prioritising his own goalscoring ambitions during one attack involving Fernandes, while Chris Sutton labelled Martinez an "embarrassment" and claimed the Spaniard was "too scared" to take his captain off.Martinez, however, defended his decision."We were finding it difficult because they were playing in a back six," he said."It makes no sense to get a player like Cristiano out of the game where you need goals."When you need goals, you need a player like Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch."Portugal return to action against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, knowing victory would significantly boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter

'Dig of the century' beneath Notre Dame reveals mysterious markings, ancient secrets
Archaeologists excavating Notre Dame cathedral in Paris have uncovered centuries of buried history, including a 1,700-year-old Roman coin and baffling markings that experts still can't explain. The excavation, which has been in the works for years, began after the cathedral was rebuilt in the wake of a devastating 2019 fire. The latest results were reported earlier in June by the Associated Press (AP).Digging in the cathedral's forecourt, archaeologists have searched roughly 13 feet below ground for remnants of the city's past.'HERMETICALLY SEALED' ROMAN SARCOPHAGUS FROZEN IN TIME FOR 1,700 YEARS FINALLY OPENED BY ARCHAEOLOGISTSAmong the finds are a 4th-century coin bearing the face of Emperor Constantine, as well as medieval pottery fragments bearing markings archaeologists have not yet deciphered. One image shows a medieval pottery fragment recovered during the excavation, one of several ceramics unearthed beneath Notre Dame.Archaeologist Valentine Breloux told the AP it's "rare to find complete ceramics," adding that the most astonishing discoveries were mysterious reddish markings painted inside pottery fragments which experts have yet to decipher.ANCIENT 'SEATED' SKELETONS UNEARTHED BENEATH MODERN SCHOOL SITE, PUZZLING ARCHAEOLOGISTSThe excavation, which French media has called the "dig of the century," has also yielded hundreds of other objects, including whole jugs and cups that were thrown into a latrine. The latrine, which doubled as a garbage pit, also contained broken plates and animal bones.Archaeologists also uncovered medieval grain pits, which were used to preserve harvested grain, from the sixth to the 10th centuries.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERA Roman-era doorstep was also discovered at the site, which archaeologists said had been removed from a larger structure, flipped upside down and repurposed as road paving.Lucie Altenburg, a conservator with the Paris archaeology unit, told the AP the excavation is a "rare opportunity.""The hope is that we are able to go back in time even further than weve ever been before," she said.CLICK HERE FOR MORE LIFESTYLE STORIESThe project gives archaeologists a chance to "work on something thats tangibly going to make a difference to the history of Paris," added Altenburg. The Roman finds are among the artifacts archaeologists value most, the AP reported, though the team hopes to uncover evidence of the Gauls, who predated the Romans in the area."Here you can see the layers medieval Paris, Roman Paris, maybe even before that," archaeology student Yasmine Benali told the AP.Benali added, "It makes the city feel less like a postcard and more like something still being discovered."TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZThe dig is tied to a broader renovation of the Notre Dame square, which is expected to add trees and other visitor-friendly features by 2028, according to Altenburg.Emily Carter, a tourist from Manchester, told the AP that the excavation "makes Notre Dame feel alive again.""You come to see the cathedral, then realize theres another city under your feet," she said."Thats almost more moving."The Associated Press contributed reporting.
