Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown 'gutted' for Harry Maguire missing out on England squad
Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown admitted he is "gutted" for Harry Maguire after the centre-back missed out on the England squad.Maguire was one of several key players to be excluded from Thomas Tuchel's side, who got off to winning ways in their opening World Cup game against Croatia, beating the runners-up of the tournament in 2018, 4-2.Brown, who played 23 times for England, shared his disappointment at Maguire missing out on what would have been his third World Cup.Speaking exclusively to GB News through BetGoodwin, he said: "I was gutted for Harry Maguire. With the size of squads available for these tournaments, I felt he'd done enough this season to be in contention.TRENDINGStoriesVideosYour Say"He's had to deal with a lot of criticism over the years, but I think he's shown real character and has been a key part of a Manchester United side that has been solid this season."I completely understand his disappointment. Any player who misses out on a World Cup squad is going to feel hurt."We saw similar decisions involving talented players like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer. "Ultimately, though, the manager has to make difficult choices and pick the group he believes gives him the best chance of success."LATEST SPORTS NEWSWorld Cup day 10: Netherlands in action against Sweden before Germany plays Ivory CoastLIV Golf star becomes first player to receive two-shot penalty for club throw at US OpenScotland lose to Morocco 1-0 as referee centre of attention in feisty encounterEngland performed brilliantly in the second half against Croatia, who had no answer for the relentless pressure of the Three Lions.Goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford added to Harry Kane's double in the first half to get England off to the perfect start. When asked about how far he feels England will go, Brown told the People's Channel: "When I look at England's squad, we've probably had stronger groups on paper in the past, but tournament football is about finding the right balance and functioning as a team."The encouraging thing is that this group knows what it takes to compete on the biggest stage."Brown continued: "In the last three major tournaments, England have reached a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final. "The next step is finding a way to deliver in those moments against the very best teams."After watching that second-half performance, I genuinely believe England can go all the way. "If they continue to improve as the tournament progresses, they'll give themselves a great chance of going all the way."England play their next game of the World Cup on June 23 against Ghana from 9pm.Ghana got off to a winning start with victory over Panama thanks to a last-minute goal from Caleb Yirenkyi.Their main threat down the left-hand side comes from Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo, who enjoyed a brilliant season, scoring 17 goals in the league.Bukayo Saka appears unlikely to start again for the Three Lions, with Tuchel saying: "Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready. I think once we go to the last game of this group, he will be ready."Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
