Lionel Messi Breaks All-Time FIFA Men's World Cup Scoring Record Against Austria
History has been rewritten. Lionel Messi has cemented his legacy as the greatest to ever play the game, adding the ultimate goal-scoring crown to an already legendary rsum. After scoring against Austria on Monday afternoon, Messi recorded his 17th FIFA World Cup goal to become the all-time scoring leader in the men's tournament. Hes officially surpassed the record held by Germanys Miroslav Klose. The record for most goals scored at a World Cup tournament is held by Brazil women's team legend Marta with 18. The goal came in the 38th minute at Dallas Stadium off a thunderous one-time touch from Facundo Medina's pass that sailed into the bottom-left corner past Austria keeper Alexander Schlager. Messi has played in every World Cup since 2006 and has scored in all but one edition, missing the scoresheet only in 2010. He scored seven goals during Argentinas 2022 World Cup title run and has already added four more in 2026, continuing to build on his record. On top of making World Cup history, Messi is Argentinas all-time leading goalscorer with 122 goals. He also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances, with 27, and will look to add to that total by the end of the tournament. Could Mbapp Also Join Messi? After making history, Messi has firmly established himself as the undisputed GOAT of the sport, while another rising star is slowly but surely building an impressive World Cup resume behind him in France star Kylian Mbapp. At just 27 years old, Mbapp already ranks fourth on the tournament's all-time scoring list with 14 career goals. He is also on track to surpass Klose's mark, potentially as early as this year's World Cup. Mbapp has already scored 14 goals in just 15 World Cup matches, including four as a 19-year-old during Frances 2018 title run. He followed that performance by scoring eight goals in 2022, the most in the tournament, highlighted by a hat trick in the World Cup final against Argentina. Mbapp made his impact known after recording the second hat trick ever recorded in a World Cup final. Messi may hold the record today, but Mbapp is rapidly closing the gap and appears destined to challenge it in the years ahead. The race for World Cup history is far from over and could take center stage again if France and Argentina meet in another World Cup final.

David Lynch: Liverpool ready to sell midfielder despite recent reports
David Lynch: Liverpool ready to sell midfielder despite recent reportsCurtis Jones Exit Talk Grows as Inter Milan Push LiverpoolCurtis Jones Liverpool future looks increasingly uncertain, and the latest Media Matters podcast on Anfield Index gave the clearest indication yet that this could be the summer he leaves Anfield.Speaking to Dave Davis, David Lynch discussed Inter Milans interest in the midfielder, who has just one year remaining on his contract. With talks over a new deal stalled and Liverpool unimpressed by Inters current offer, the situation now feels like a negotiation waiting for one side to move.Jones Still Keen on Inter MoveLynchs reading of the situation was blunt. He believes the arrival of Andoni Iraola has not changed Jones thinking.I think this is kind of confirmation that theres not. That was in response to the question of whether there could be a U-turn now that Arne Slot has gone and Iraola has arrived.Lynch added:I think the players still very keen to go to Inter despite that. That matters. This does not appear to be a case of Liverpool pushing out a homegrown player purely for profit. It sounds more like Jones sees Serie A as a fresh start, with Lynch noting:I think he wants a new start and wants to try that out.Liverpool Irritated by Inter OfferDave Davis referenced Paul Joyces reporting that Liverpool were irritated by Inters latest low offer, with the bid discussed at around 25 million, roughly 21.6 million.Lynch agreed that the numbers remain short of Liverpools valuation.Clearly theyre nowhere near.Yet he also suggested a deal remains possible if Inter improve their position.Theres probably a compromise to be had here.Liverpools challenge is obvious. Jones has one year left on his deal, so the clubs leverage is limited. Even so, Lynch believes the Reds are right not to accept a cut-price deal.I do feel like Liverpool are getting kind of low-balled.He added:Even if we got thirty million I still dont think it would be enough with some of the prices that weve seen.Photo: IMAGOContract Situation Shapes EverythingThe contract clock is now central to the story. Dave Davis noted that Liverpool would rather risk losing Jones for nothing next summer than accept a poor fee, but Lynch viewed that as part of the public negotiating dance. Its clearly a position. He then went further:I think they are willing to sanction a sale. Well, they are. I know they are willing to sanction a sale. That is the key line. Liverpool are not desperate, but they are open. The fee has to be acceptable, and Inter must move closer to the figure Liverpool want.As Lynch put it:Its got to be on our terms.Italy Move Appeals to JonesOne interesting detail from the podcast was why Jones may prefer Inter over another Premier League club. Lynch suggested the move is not simply about leaving Liverpool.I get the impression it really appeals to go to another league and try something new entirely. He also mentioned that Jones has been asking Federico Chiesa about life in Italy.I think its the lifestyle change and that that really appeals rather than just kind of getting out.For Liverpool, that may be frustrating. A Premier League buyer would likely pay more, but if Jones wants Inter, the market narrows. The expectation from Lynch was clear enough. If Inter find the extra money, the transfer should move quickly. If they do, then this deal should get wrapped up pretty quickly. For now, Curtis Jones remains a Liverpool player. But with one year left on his contract, Inter Milan pushing, and Liverpool open to a sale at the right price, this feels like a transfer story moving steadily towards an exit.
